~ANNIKA~

I tried to return my dad's call, but it went straight to voicemail. I listened to the message, and my heart skipped a beat at his urgent tone.

"Annika, where are you? Come home, it's urgent!" he said.

I quickly got dressed and prepared to leave. Pa James was nowhere to be found, but Jessica handed me a credit card.

"Use this as needed," she instructed.

Without leaving a note or message, I asked the driver to get ready, and we sped away from the mansion. The driver sensed my haste and didn't ask questions.

We soon arrived at dads house, as I stepped out of the car, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. The small playground on the corner reminded me of my childhood days.

I remembered my brother Jesse and I playing together, with our mother's loving presence. But the present reality hit me hard, my mother's absence and my brother's distance.

I hadn't visited home in a while, but the memory of my dad and I arguing about my marriage to Angelo still lingered. He had opposed the marriage due to a past feud.

I entered the house, finding my dad lying down. "Dad, what's wrong? How have you been?" I asked, concerned.

He replied, "Well, as you can see, I'm not feeling well." He didn't seem his usual self.

I asked, "Since when? Did you call Doctor Ken?" Doctor Ken had been our family doctor since I was a child and was also my dad's best friend.

My dad replied, "He just left a while ago. He said it's just a normal fever due to high blood pressure.”

As I gazed at my dad, I felt a surge of concern. We hadn't been close, and I regretted not being more supportive. I realized I needed to reconcile with him; I didn't want to lose him.

"Where's Maggie?" I asked, trying to change the subject.

"She's fixing lunch," my dad replied weakly.

My dad, Werner Larson, was 68, but I knew he was a strong man. He had survived a lot since my mom passed away.

“But that wasn't why I called you. I had heard disturbing news, I heard your husband dumped you for his mistress," my dad said, concern etched on his face.

I sighed, feeling guilty. I had ignored my dad's warnings about Angelo.

The weight of my past decisions crushed me.

"I guess you're heartbroken," my dad said empathetically. "But this gives me a chance to try making you independent."

“I hope you are still aware of our agreement?” He asked, my dad had forced me to sign an agreement with him before my marriage with Angelo.

"Yes, I remember," I replied, recalling the condition he had set.

My dad suggested that if things didn't work out after two years, I would return home to him. But I extended my stay, thinking I could still get Angelo to love me, but look at how it ended.

"Here we are now," my dad said gently but firmly.

"Well, your marriage didn't work out," he continued. "And now, my company is facing bankruptcy with $20 million in debts. I need your help to rebuild it."

"I know you're resourceful," he said, his eyes pleading. "You can do it, right? You will do it for me?"

It was a lot to take in, but I saw sincerity in his eyes. He wasn't just asking me to save his company; he was asking me to help restore his purpose and pride.

"Dad, I don't know if I can," I said, shaking my head, feeling overwhelmed.

"How did you end up facing bankruptcy? My name is all over the internet... I wish I could help, but Angelo left me with nothing. No assets, except for my jewelry box, which wouldn't even fetch $5 million.”

"I can't, Dad. I need to fix my marriage," I continued, tears welling up in my eyes. "Besides, I'm pregnant."

A teardrop rolled down my cheek as I spoke, my voice cracking with emotion. I felt like I was drowning in my own despair, unable to help my dad or myself.

The weight of my failed marriage, financial struggles, and unexpected pregnancy felt like too much to bear. I broke down in tears.

"Please, Annika, for your child's sake," my dad begged, coughing violently. "I need you to help me save the company."

I yelled for Maggie to bring water as my dad struggled to breathe. "Dad, please, hang on!"

"For your child's sake, Annika, you must help me," he pleaded, his eyes filled with desperation.

I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed Angelo's number, no longer caring about the consequences. I needed to tell him about our child.

As soon as he answered, I paused, collecting my thoughts. But before I could speak, he yelled, "Why are you calling me? What's the matter?"

His tone was abrasive, but I didn't let it intimidate me. I took a deep breath and began to speak.

"Angelo, I'm pregnant with your child," I said bluntly, my voice shaking with emotion.

But instead of shock or concern, he burst out laughing. "What? You're very funny!" he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

His words cut deep, and I felt a sting of humiliation. I tried to hold back tears, but they began to flow anyway.

"Angelo, I'm serious," I pleaded, my voice cracking. "It's your child. I've never been with anyone else. You're the only one."

But Angelo's response was cold and detached. "The only person who can bear my child is Lissa, not you."

Before I could respond, Lissa snatched the phone from him. "Hey, you bitch!" she yelled.

"Go find the real father of that bastard in your belly, because I'm already two weeks pregnant with Angelo's child!"

Her words felt like a slap in the face. I was taken aback by her venom and the shocking revelation.

"What? You're pregnant too?" I stammered, my mind reeling from the news.

Lissa's laughter was manic and cruel. "Yes, stupid! And my child will be the only one Angelo acknowledges."

I sat in stunned silence, my thoughts whirling with uncertainty and disbelief. Was he the same man I married three years ago?

Just as I was processing the unsettling chat with Angelo, my phone vibrated with a fresh message from an unknown sender.

I hesitated before opening it, and my heart sank as I read the words: 'This is Melissa. Let's meet at Brownies Hospital by 5 pm today. Angelo wants a DNA test.’

~ ANNIKA ~ I got my babies settled for the night after explaining everything to them. Noteverything, per se. Mainly my reasons forcalling Angelo a dangerous man. I knew it waswrong of me to accuse him of things he didn'tdo, but that was all I could do to get them offmy case. It wasn't as if he was innocent. Though it took more than just weaving tales and looking serious, to convince them, I did a feat not everyone would boast of. So, after I tucked them in for the night and called Jonathan, to check on him, I hastened over to my room to have a considerable-needed rest, something I had been craving since I arrived.I didn't know how much I wanted to relax until my head touched the pillow. It was lunchtime, and I decided to eat out, opting to leave a few minutes before the actual time, to avoid Angelo, who had been sticking around since morning. He was becoming a stubborn leech.I requested the only table overlooking the road, the one with wall-to-ceiling glass, with a gorgeous

~ ANNIKA ~ I stared at my phone for a long time before I placed it on the table, frowning. Puffing out a breath, I relaxed on the sofa and focused on my babies, who were writing their assignments. They refused to complete their homework when I was away, stubbornly telling Julie they would only write it with me. Not that they needed my help, they just claimed my presence would help, but I knew they just wanted me back."Are you certain you can do it alone?" Julie, who was sitting next to them, asked, peering at my babies, with their heads bent, writing. She looked like she wanted to help, but they weren't giving her the chance."Yeah. We got this." Their response was confident, as always. Ever since they started school, I doubted they had ever sought my help. They were always so positive about their assignments."Really?" Julie inquired, peering at them. "I won't mind helping. I just…""You don't have to worry about us." Powell raised his head to look at her, smiling. "If you wi

~ ANGELO ~"What the damned hell are you doing in my office?" I seethed, turning to confront Lissa, who tried to hold my hand. "Why are you here? What did you say to Annika?" I was barely keeping my anger in check."I missed you, Ang!" she cried, clinging to my right arm and placing her head on it. "Don't you feel the same?" She peered up, sniffing."No, I don't." I removed her hand from mine and placed my palms on either side of her face. "I don't want you to stoop so low as to do something like this, Lils. You are more than that. You don't have to let your rage control you.""But I missed you!" She argued. "Please don't push me away, Ang. I missed you." She held onto my hand like it was an anchor on a stormy night, sobs wracking through her body. "We haven't gone this long without seeing each other, and it hurts.""Lils—""I'm sorry. I know you broke up with me because I was disturbing you for marriage. I won't do it again. Furthermore, I promise to be a cute little girlfrien

~ ANNIKA ~ "Is it about the kids? I can adopt them as mine," he hurried to say, thinking that would pave the way for him. "I swear to you I will do whatever you ask. I will go to the end of the world and even climb the highest mountain if that would make you forgive me.""What if I order you to kill yourself?" I whirled around so I didn't have to look over my shoulder while talking to him. "Will you do that? What if I charge you to give your wealth to me?" I knew he was a proud man.All the promises he made were nothing but empty ones. He just wanted to get in my pants. That was all. He doesn't love me. The only reason he still clung to me was the thrill of having me succumb. To him, I was nothing but a hard nut to crack, one he would go to every length to overpower so he could feel like a man. What he was after was the thrill of the chase and nothing more."If that's what you want." His tone was resolute. "As long as it will earn your forgiveness and put a smile on your face,

~ ANNIKA ~"What do you need help with?" I folded my arms, giving him a suspicious look."Missing files." Angelo gestured to his desk. "My system had a minor problem and most of my work disappeared. I just need your help in regaining them. I believe they’re somewhere. It's just…" He rubbed the back of his neck, peering at me helplessly."As a software engineer?" I frowned, wondering if he'd hit his head. "You could have called the company's software engineer. Why are you calling me when I have limited knowledge about this?" Despite my words, I walked over to his desk to check on the issue."Because I know I can trust you," his reply was filled with pride.Glaring, I plopped down on his armchair, grumbling as I checked his system. "I don’t even know why you think I can do this. Computer systems are different from jewelry designs!" I glared at him."I know they are different, and also how capable you are," he stated, his gaze fixed on mine, unwavering. "You are good with computer system

~ ANNIKA ~"Mum!" Powell ran over to me the moment I walked into the school. They were sitting in the waiting area with the proprietress when I stepped into the school with an eager Benita in tow."Darling." I squatted to carry him in my arms, placing a kiss as I grinned. "Did you miss Mum?" I patted his hair."Of course! You were supposed to come pick us up ages ago. Why didn't you do that?" Pouting, he stared down at me, accusingly, his eyes narrowed as he watched me."I'm sorry, darling." Grinning, I got up, leaving Benita to gush over him like the fan girl she was. She sounded as if she had seen an angel with the way she squealed. Shaking my head at how childish she looked, I walked over to my darling. Pippa sat next to the proprietress, with her arms folded and a pout on her face."Darling?" I approached with care, realizing I had to thread carefully else I would get my head bitten off by my daughter, who hated it whenever I delayed taking them back, especially on days that I pro
