I barely sleep. And I'm promising and being honest that it's not because of the task. It's not because of the stupid envelope sitting on my desk like some kind of threat. It's because of my Mom. The way she looked when she realized she had been setting out plates for two people who weren't coming home. The way she laughed like she could brush it off, but I saw the hurt behind her eyes. She misses them. She misses Noah and Enzo. And maybe I'm selfish for thinking this, but it hurts knowing that they're not only avoiding me. They're avoiding her too. I understand Noah being angry. I understand Enzo wanting nothing to do with me. I deserve whatever anger they have toward me. But Mom? She didn't do anything. If I find either of them at school today, or cross paths with them, I'm taking my chances and starting a conversation. I don't know how. I don't know if they'll even let me get close enough to explain myself. If they still hate me after hearing the truth and all they're doing to mom, then fine. At least I'll know I tried. I throw on my clothes the next morning, barely touching my breakfast before leaving the house. I arrive late at school today. If Mom had driven me, I know it wouldn't have been the case. Since I walked... here am I. People are still staring at me. The whispers haven't even gone away. But I don't care as much today. I'm thinking it's because my mind is already somewhere else. It's on finding my brother and his friend. I know where they'll be by this time. I barely make it past the hallway near the lockers when I hear my name. "Nova." I stop and turn around. Isn't it too early for this? I haven't given the girls a second thought since last night. I turn slowly and see Bethany standing there with Kayda, Halana, and Genevieve. The Sigma Omega girls. "Good morning," Bethany says, smiling like we're old friends. I let her know that we're not when I don't return her smile. "Can we talk?" I blurt out, despite my initial reaction to their presence. Kayda raises an eyebrow. "You're already here." I ignore her, looking straight at Bethany. "About my task." The smile on Bethany's face doesn't disappear, but it changes. "Already?" She glances at her sisters... or friends... or whatever the hell they're called. "Yes." I cross my arms. "I want to change it." I say. This is something I was thinking about, but I wasn't sure I'd get the courage to ask. Now it's out, I just have to hear what Bethany will say. "I figured you'd ask," Bethany says. "Then you know it's ridiculous." I offer. "It's a challenge." She's still standing on the task. "What you want me to do is stupid. It's ridiculous. You girls know the amount of hate I have in school and doing any of the tasks will only add to it. I'm not a backstabber or a bitch." Kayda scoffs. "Interesting coming from someone who recorded a private conversation." I send her a hateful glare. What the hell is her problem? "I didn't post it." "But you made it." She insists. There it is again. The same thing everyone says. I swallow the anger rising in my throat. "Can we not do this? I'm not asking to leave. I'm asking if we can switch tasks." Bethany tilts her head. "With who?" I glance at the girls. "Gia's. Or Serenity's." A small laugh escapes Kayda. "Absolutely not." "Why?" "Because those tasks were made for them." "And mine was made for me?" I ask bitterly. Bethany doesn't answer immediately. That tells me everything. "You know I can't do that," she finally says. "Please..." Fuck. I can't believe I'm actually begging. "Girl, your task isn't about the person you're supposed to hurt." I frown. What the hell does that mean now? "It's about finding out what kind of person you really are." I stare at her. "That's bullshit. I'm a good person. I've not done one thing to hurt anybody until the recording. And let's be real. You want me to destroy someone who likes me just to prove something?" "Don't see it that way. The girls just want to know. I especially want to know if you still care about being good when being good gets you nothing." "You don't know me." I press my lips together. "None of you do. If you people know me, then you'd know that I can't do it." "Look who's talking. Just now wasn't she begging to be switched with Serenity or Gia?" Kayda says and then a snort leaves her. I shut my eyes and reopen them. Now, I'm glaring at Kayda. "Okay, can you not be a bitch?" "Kayda... be nice." Bethany glances at her. "Look, just think about it." She tells me before storming off, the girls trailing behind her. I walk away before they can say anything else. Fuck them again. I need air, and space. I spot Ava, standing by the lockers, talking to two girls from Phi Delta. "Do it. Go and tell her." One of the girls nudge Ava who looks at me before shaking her head. "I can't." She tells them. "No, but you will. Or else..."NOVAI barely sleep. And I'm promising and being honest that it's not because of the task. NOVAMy back hurts so bad. And it's not even because I've been busy helping Mom in the kitchen all evening making Noah's favourite. It's not because I feel so stiff as I make my way to my room.I think it's because I'd been carrying my backpack all day. With the envelope inside of it, I have trust issues. I didn't want anybody to find it first. Since I don't know what's in the envelope, it's safer there.I still can't believe I'm about to be a sorority girl. Well, if I can complete whatever task Bethany and her friends want me to. Hearing Gia and Serenity's tasks, I'm sure mine will be much worse.I don't think I give a fuck either. Whatever it is, I'm sure I can do it. Can't be anything worse than what the school thinks I did. Yes. I'm more optimistic now than this afternoon. "Baby, dinner's ready. Come on downstairs!" Mom's voice rings in my ears just as I grab my backpack. I dig into it, my fingers grasping the envelope, tearing it open just so I can see what's in it before dinner
NOVA I'd be running and blabbing my mouth to my best friend if this had happened the week before. Yeah, I'm not about to make that mistake twice. But this... this is huge. I can't keep this to myself. I have to tell someone. And I can't talk to Ava. I literally ended my friendship with her. After the first two classes, I retreat to the cafeteria and find a table that's secluded. My head is reeling so much. I'm thinking about Bethany's offer. I'd be a bloody liar if I said I wasn't considering it. Becoming a part of the Sigma Omega is like every girl's dream. It wasn't part of mine when I still had a place I belonged to. The media department. But now... it's my only option. Fuck. I'm thinking like one of those half-brained girls I used to dislike before. But do I have any choice here? Joining doesn't even mean people will accept me just yet. So what do I have to lose? The chatter and laughter makes me look up. Few girls have just made their way into the cafeteria. Among the gi
NOVABeing back at school is no fun. Being back at home is no fun either. A part of me wishes I'm still at the valley, with Aunt Joan, Marcus, Kol and Chloe. Even though my cousins were immature and brought trouble to their doorstep, I still feel that I wouldn't feel like an outcast if I had stayed there.Enzo fucking released the statement. It made me look like an evil, jealous person. But I should be happy that it did exempt my brother. Mom keeps saying the damage has already been done. That no matter what Enzo's father does with his lawyers and even a PR team, there's little they can do. The only thing that can make the slate clean again, is if the girl releases a statement. And I would have gone to the end of the world to find the girl in question. But it involves talking to Enzo and he hates me. My brother hates me as well."Just leave it be, baby." Mom glances at me from the driver's seat.I fold my arms. "It's not that easy mom. I made the mess. I should be the one to clean i
NOVA Now that I know that you're guilty and that you purposely recorded us, I don't feel bad for whatever it is I'm going to do. His words hit harder than Noah's. I stare at Enzo through the blur of my tears, my chest tightening so painfully I can barely breathe. He thinks I did it on purpose. He actually believes I recorded them because I wanted something to use against him. "No..." I whisper, shaking my head helplessly. "Enzo, that's not..." The front door suddenly open. There's a pause, and then I hear Aunt Joan's voice. "What on earth is going on?" She appears, two grocery bags hanging from her hands. Her eyes travel across the room... Marcus standing protectively in front of me, Noah glaring at everyone, Enzo beside him, and me... crying so hard I can barely stay upright. The bags slip from her fingers onto the floor. "N-Noah?" Her face hardens almost immediately. "What are you doing here?" Nobody answers. She doesn't wait for one. Her gaze lands on my face again,
NOVA Enzo’s more family than Nova will ever be. A suffocating silence fills the foyer. I feel the blood drain from my face entirely, leaving me numb from head to toe. I’ve spent my whole life trying to fit into Noah’s shadow, trying to be the supportive sister, trying to navigate his moods and his career. But hearing him say those words.. so casually, so easily... in front of our cousins. It breaks something inside of me. Completely. "Noah, are you fucking kidding me?" Marcus steps in front of me, his chest rising and falling rapidly. He looks ready to throw a punch. "She is your sister. Your blood. You don’t get to come into my house and say shit like that to her." "Marcus, don't," I choke out, my voice barely a whisper. I reach out, my fingers brushing the sleeve of Marcus’s shirt to pull him back. I can't let him get into a physical fight because of me. But Noah doesn't even look at Marcus. His eyes are locked on me, I can see the deep resentment. He really believes I di
