"Ma mère, her food is ready" one of the maidens who had left earlier announced as she wheeled in a tray of covered food
"Good. What about the bath?" The elderly woman enquired
"Vanessa is having it done ma mère" the lady answered.
Rose took hold of every information she heard, the senior lady was called mother, maybe she birthed the two younger women. Among the two, the shorter one was referred to as Vanessa.
"Where do I place it?"
"Over to this side, child" Ma mère directed her. The slender maiden obeyed quietly and made for the door
"Miriam?" Ma mère called her attention
"Yes, good mother" she turned
"Go get some rest. You've been working since the midnight hour"
"I sure will" Miriam nodded her head before leaving the room
"Dear child" Ma mère sprang up "Fill your belly with this meal so you can have your bath there after" she looked up at the clock ticking stealthily on the wall
"It's already past one? Good gracious! Hurry child, you must be ready to see Madame Gloria by three" Ma mère said in haste as she rushed to leave
"But who is Madame Gloria?" Rose echoed but it was too late for her voice to be heard, Ma mère had disappeared through the door already
Rose looked around the room, it was a big one, although a bit old fashioned.
The room smelt musty, the colour was a dull brown. A shelf of books stood by the corner, on the side table were some old newspapers stacked neatly together
The windows were sizable too, she paved way through the curtains and looked through the open window
She could see guards standing at tension, talking calmly while the others gambled
"If only I knew what all this is about. It's driving me nuts" she grabbed her hair
"What if I'm to be killed? Oh no, I'd have to escape one way or another" she scampered to the door and tried pulling it open, it was locked. She tried again and again, all attempts proved useless
Not being able to have her way with the door, she dashed to the window and looked below. It had just dawned on her that she was on the top most floor of the castle so any effort to jump out that window would surely lead to her death. She put her back to the wall, feeling disenchanted
"I can't let these evil wolves kill me, not after every… wait a minute, is it really their plan to have me killed?" she thought
"Cos if that was the agenda, that monster would have finished the job before now, he had the opportunity after all
"I suppose they wouldn't have offered me this room or any food at all if that was the case" at the mention of food, she felt her belly murmur.
She squeezed it tightly, dragging herself to the food tray. She lifted the lid, revealing the contents of the tray. On it was a loaf of freshly made
bread, a glass of thick milk and a huge chunk of grilled meat.
The hungry wolf girl dived in quickly. Her interest seemed to dwell on the meat more than the bread. Taking hold of the glass, she emptied the content in one gulp, she could feel her dry tongue resurrect to life
She felt better and stronger already. Food was probably the medicine she needed at the moment to get her in shape.
Her mind suddenly wandered off to the past, how graciously her mother would prepare fresh milk for them. Hers always carried an unknown ingredient that made it superb. She could remember how Jack would stuff himself with food until he'd need some help getting up
"Oh Jack.." she smiles wryly
"Jack? Oh no Jack!" Her eyes almost pulled out from their sockets
"Where was he taken to? What was I thinking that I forgot about him all the while? What if he's hurt or being tortured? I'd never forgive myself" her eyes beamed with tears, guilt overwhelmed her. How could she have forgotten the only one she had left?
"I must find him" Rose rose in resolution, and tried opening the door once more. What followed was a series of pounding banging
"Let me out, I have to see my brother" she cried with desperation in her voice.
Fearful thoughts galloped through her mind. What if he was dead?
Wayne had said he didn't find Jack useful anyway. What if that heartless beast slew the poor child in his unconsciousness? Her whole life would be doomed forever
"Help me! Someone help!" She banged more, disturbing the quiet nature of the vicinity. No one was forthcoming, it was their plan all along, that's why she was locked in there. The food and care was a distraction wasn't it?
"How could I have fallen foolishly for it?" Her lips uttered in regret. A melancholic cloud hung over her head, depression was having it's way with her. She looked outside the window, a group of guards were practicing with dreadful looking guns
"Aim target" the commander held his hand in the air "And fire!" He brought his hand down forcefully
The word "fire" echoed in Rose's ears
She ran back to the door and resumed banging
"Fire! Fire! The room's on fire!"
In less than thirty seconds, she heard footsteps running to the doorstep.
The door was opened immediately
Ma mère entered first followed by Vanessa and a male guard.
"Child, are you by any means hurt? And where is the fire?" Ma mère held Rose's shoulders
"I'm fine. And there's no fire, I lied. I just want to see my brother, to know his condition. I'm losing it at the thought of him being killed" she voiced in honesty
"No one has killed your brother young lady. He's in good care now" the gray haired lady assured
"I want to see for myself" Rose doubted her words, no one could be trusted now
The candle wax melted away slowly, Rose sat up with the sheets over her legs. Her skin oozed sweat, her brows furrowed. She felt Yseult's cold arm on her arm, she knew she couldn't keep the nightmares anymore to herself, even though she felt terrified. She peered into Yseult little eyes, and began "I was in a dark and empty room," Rose began, her voice shaking slightly. "It was cold, and I was alone. I could hear the wind howling outside, and I could feel the chill seeping in through the walls. I was so afraid, and I didn't know where I was or how I had gotten there. All I knew was that I was trapped, and I couldn't escape." She paused, taking a deep breath. "Then, I heard a noise. It was the sound of footsteps, coming closer and closer to me. I was terrified, not knowing what was coming.""What happened next?" Yseult asked, her voice low and soothing. "A shadow appeared in the doorway," Rose continued. "It was dark and without figure, but I knew it was something terrible. I wanted
Rose was wandering through a dark forest, the trees looming over her like silent sentinels. She felt lost and alone, her heart filled with a sense of dread. She was walking through the forest for what seemed like hours, when suddenly she heard a voice calling out her name "Rose," the voice said, soft and sweet, like a mother's lullaby. "Rose, where are you?" Rose stopped, looking around in the darkness. "Mother?" she called out. "Is that you?"The voice continued to call to her, leading her deeper and deeper into the forest. She stumbled over roots and rocks, her feet growing heavy with fatigue. But still, she pressed on, drawn to the voice like a moth to a flame Finally, she saw a light shining through the trees, like a beacon in the night. She ran towards it, her heart racing with hope She burst into a clearing, and there she saw her mother, standing in the moonlight. She was as beautiful as Rose remembered her, with her long, flowing hair and her gentle smile."Mother," Rose b
Rose sat under a tree, watching Yseult as she carefully gathered herbs from the field. Yseult moved with such grace and purpose, picking the herbs with a practiced ease. Rose had been helping Yseult gather herbs for the past few days, and she was fascinated by the process. Yseult had taught her the names of the herbs and their uses, and Rose had been impressed by the knowledge. Yseult was so confident and sure of herself, and Rose felt in awe of her.As Yseult gathered the last of the herbs, she turned to Rose with a smile. "That's the last of the herbs for today," she said "Now, let's go back to the cottage and make some tinctures." Rose stood up and followed Yseult back to the cottage. As they walked, Yseult pointed out different plants and told Rose their usesRose listened intently, soaking up every word. When they reached the cottage, Yseult led Rose to the kitchen and set out the herbs on the table. "Now, we must prepare the tinctures," she said, taking out a mortar and pes
The strange house loomed ahead, shrouded in shadows. Rose and Jack crept closer, their hearts pounding in their chests. They had been running for hours, since they had escaped the werewolf kidnappers They had no idea where they were, or what they would find in this strange place. But they had to take a chance, or the werewolves would catch themAs they approached the house, they noticed something odd. There were no windows, and the door was made of solid wood, with no knob or handle. It was almost as if the house didn't want anyone to enter. But they had no choice. "Do you think it's safe?" whispered JackRose shook her head, but she knew they had no other option. They both had cuts and bruises from their escape, and they were starting to feel weak with hungerThey had to find a place to rest, even if it was just for a few hoursWith a deep breath, Rose raised her hand and knocked on the door. There was no response, but they could hear a muffled sound from within the house. They kno
The chief guard, Wayne stood in the shadows, just out of sight of the room where Ma mére was speaking to the junior maids He had been assigned to keep watch over the servants, to make sure they were not plotting anything against the royal familyBut now, he had something much more important to worry about. He had heard the children's escape, and he knew that if the king found out, there would be serious consequences So he had to act fast. As he listened to Ma mére's words, he decided to make his move.He stepped out of the shadows, and cleared his throat loudlyAll eyes turned to him, and the room fell silent. Ma mére looked at him with a mixture of surprise and fear"What are you doing here?" she demanded "I was just checking in on the servants, until…" Wayne replied, his voice firm and unshakable"How long have you been standing there son?" Ma mére wore a frightened look"How dare you? How dare you let the children escape right under your nose?" "You must not speak of the childr
The evening was so thick with tension as Rose clutched her younger brother, Jack's hand, their fingers intertwined like a lifeline"Rose… please don't let go of my hand" the poor boy said under his breath Jack was obviously sore afraid, and he had to, he was only a child. Rose was equally scared, maybe more but she couldn't let that stop herShe had to find a way out of that hell hole before they get killed like their motherShe halted suddenly, tightening her grip on Jack's hand. Hot tears filled her eyes and traced her cheeks slowly"Rose? What.. What's wrong? Are you crying?" Jack peered into his sister's face innocently"It's just… I miss mom so much. I'd do anything to see her even if it's for a second" she closed her eyes and let the tears fall liberally"Oh Rose…" Jack circled her in a tight hug, bursting aloud in tears"Hey champ, it's okay alright?" She sniffed in hard, attempting to calm him down " We're going to be alright, we just have to be strong and keep moving forward
