Chapter 1

Noah dropped a large envelope onto the table in front of Kath.

She frowned, having no idea what was inside.

He had just arrived home from the office, and she had been waiting for him all evening. She wanted to talk to him about moving out of his family's mansion.

For the past two years of their marriage, they had been living under the same roof as his parents.

Not once had her mother-in-law treated her like a daughter-in-law.

If anything, she was more like a live-in maid.

From the day she married Noah, every household employee had been dismissed, and Kath had been forced to take over all of their duties.

Marrying someone like Noah Montenegro had never been part of her dreams.

She had been a graduating Accountancy student when she learned that her grandfather had arranged her marriage.

At first, she had refused.

But standing before the man who had raised her, she eventually gave in.

She was the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy family.

Although her father came from privilege, she had never been accepted as part of that family.

Everything she owned—every meal she ate and every necessity she had—had been earned through sacrifice.

She had endured everything because she had nowhere else to go.

As long as she had food to eat and a roof over her head, she told herself she could survive.

Frowning, she picked up the envelope.

She completely forgot what she had wanted to tell Noah.

Across the room, he sat on the bed and loosened his necktie.

The moment she read the bold words printed across the document inside, her blood ran cold.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT

Her eyes widened.

Slowly, she turned to look at Noah.

"W-What does this mean?" she whispered.

He glanced at her with an expression that suggested he was already tired of the conversation before it had even begun.

"Can't you read?" he asked coldly as he continued unbuttoning his shirt.

"This is ridiculous!" she exclaimed, rising from her chair.

She hadn't waited all evening just to receive divorce papers.

They hadn't even fought.

She had endured every insult and humiliation his mother had thrown at her.

She had accepted everything.

So why was he divorcing her?

"Ridiculous?" Noah echoed with a humorless laugh before shaking his head.

"What use are you, Kath, if you can't even give me an heir?"

She stared at him in disbelief.

For two years, she had done everything she could to make their marriage work.

She wanted children just as much as he did.

Before she could answer, he spoke again.

"The results of your medical examination came back."

"They say you're infertile."

"I married a woman who can't even bear my child."

His jaw tightened with anger.

She knew he had never wanted to marry her.

Neither of them had entered this marriage by choice.

But accusing her of being infertile?

That was too much.

"What?" she whispered.

"What medical examination are you talking about, Noah?"

Without answering immediately, he picked up another envelope from the bedside table and threw it at her.

The papers scattered across the floor.

With trembling hands, she picked one up.

Her name was printed at the top.

Beneath it...

A medical report declaring that she was infertile.

Her face went pale.

She had never undergone any examination.

She barely even left the house.

"This isn't mine!" she cried.

"I've never gone to a hospital! I don't even leave this house!"

Her hands trembled as she clutched the paper.

How was this possible?

Then a terrifying realization struck her.

Mother-in-law...

She had to be behind this.

A forged medical report.

Another scheme to drive her out of the house.

After all, the older woman had despised her from the very beginning.

Noah let out a cold, mocking laugh.

"You can stop pretending, Kath."

"I'm not an idiot."

"The evidence is right there."

"Why can't you just accept it?"

She couldn't find the words.

She wanted to scream that the report was fake.

She wanted to tell him that his mother had fabricated everything.

But would he even believe her?

No.

He never had.

"This is your last day in this house," Noah said emotionlessly.

"Tomorrow morning, before the sun rises..."

"You're leaving."

Without another glance, he walked into the bathroom, leaving her standing there in silence.

Her fingers tightened around the papers until they crumpled in her hands.

Her entire body trembled—not from sadness...

But from anger.

She had never imagined her mother-in-law's hatred could reach this point.

Then she remembered.

Earlier that day, the older woman had laughed and told her that she would soon be leaving the mansion.

So this was what she had meant.

What hurt even more was Noah's blind trust.

He hadn't questioned the report.

He hadn't questioned her.

He had simply believed his mother.

Just like always.

Throughout their marriage, whenever she tried to tell him how his mother treated her, he never listened.

Instead, he blamed her.

"If you behaved properly," he would always say, "my mother would never treat you that way."

A bitter smile slowly formed on her lips.

Perhaps...

She should have run away before the wedding.

She had believed marriage would finally give her peace.

Instead...

It became another prison.

For two years, Noah had never treated her as his wife.

He only remembered her when he wanted to satisfy his own desires.

Beyond that...

She meant nothing to him.

She had thought about asking for a divorce countless times.

But where would she go?

She had no money.

No savings.

Not even enough to buy herself the simplest necessities.

Returning to her grandfather's house was never an option.

She knew he would throw her out without hesitation.

He had never loved her.

Not even a little.

He had even disowned her father for falling in love with her mother—a relationship that had brought shame upon their family.

Until the day her father died...

He was never forgiven.

As for her mother...

Kath didn't even know her name.

No one in the family had ever spoken of her.

A sad smile crossed her lips.

Then she let out a hollow, humorless laugh.

Why is the world so cruel?

With a deep breath, she crushed the divorce papers into a ball and threw them onto the bed.
