CHAPTER 35

CAROLINE

I survive the council room.

The second Salvatore introduces me, every eye in the room lands on me again, and I understand very quickly that wolves stare differently from humans. There’s weight behind it.

I feel stripped bare under it, but he stays beside me the entire time.

Slade steps in smoothly before the silence becomes unbearable. “Since our Alpha enjoys terrifying people instead of behaving normally, I’ll do the introductions.”

A few people laugh nervously. Salvatore

CHAPTER 35CAROLINEI survive the council room. The second Salvatore introduces me, every eye in the room lands on me again, and I understand very quickly that wolves stare differently from humans. There’s weight behind it. I feel stripped bare under it, but he stays beside me the entire time.Slade steps in smoothly before the silence becomes unbearable. “Since our Alpha enjoys terrifying people instead of behaving normally, I’ll do the introductions.”A few people laugh nervously. Salvatore does not.I try not to stare at him, but it’s difficult not to when his presence feels wrapped around my spine. Ever since I stormed into the meeting, something between us feels different, sharper, and more exposed. I feel him now, and it keeps brushing against me in strange waves.Slade gestures toward a man seated near the centre. “That’s Dominic. Beta of the southern territories.”Dominic gives me a small smile. “Nice to officially meet you, Doctor.”His voice is warm enough that some of the

CHAPTER 34SALVATORECaroline has been glaring at me for the last twenty minutes.I pretend not to notice, mostly because if I acknowledge it, we’ll start arguing again, and I’m already exhausted. She stands near the massive windows of my office apartment, arms folded tightly over her chest, looking out over Manhattan like she wants to burn the entire city down. The morning light spills across her skin softly, catching in her hair, but there is nothing soft about her expression. She’s angry.“You’re ignoring me on purpose.” She says, finally.I continue signing the paperwork in front of me. “I heard everything you said.”“Then answer me.”“No.”Her laugh is sharp and disbelieving. “You cannot seriously think I’m staying locked in this apartment all day.”“Yes.”She turns fully toward me. “I will lose my mind in here.”My hand stills briefly against the paper. Something ugly twists in my chest before I force it down. “That is dramatic.”“No, it’s honest.” She fires back instantly. “You

CHAPTER 33CAROLINEMy voice cracks through the room before I can stop it, and silence follows immediately.Every single person in the room turns to look at me, and suddenly, I understand exactly where I am. The air itself feels dangerous here, thick with power and dominance and something deeply animal. Men sit around the long table in expensive suits, but there’s nothing human about the way they look at me.The baby shifts painfully inside me. Fear spikes hard through my chest.Salvatore stands so abruptly that his chair scrapes against the floor. His gaze locks on mine instantly. He is furious, not because I’m here, but because everyone else can see me.“What the fuck is this?” one of the men demands immediately.Another rises halfway from his seat. “Alpha …”Salvatore moves before anyone finishes speaking. One second, he’s across the room. Next, he’s in front of me.Heat slams into me violently, his scent and presence. The strange pressure that always eases whenever he’s close cras

CHAPTER 31CAROLINEThe apartment is too beautiful, but there is no air. I can’t breathe. I am completely alone here. How does that make sense? He knew that those bastard rogues, or whatever they’re called, came for me, and his next course of action was to leave me alone? He’s so stupid. I walk out and shut the door behind me.Outside, New York is loud enough to make me feel normal again, or at least human.People rush past me like I’m not important enough to notice. Cars scream down the street. A man argues into his phone. Life continues as if nothing in it has ever shifted into something impossible, which should comfort me, but it doesn’t.I walk. I don’t know where I’m going, all I know is that I need answers. I need something to do. So I take a cab to the closest hospital. If I can’t trust anything else, I can trust my work. The hospital lobby is familiar, like muscle memory - the white lights and sterile air. I approach the reception desk. “I need to check medical board registr

CHAPTER 30SALVATOREI clench my jaw hard, trying to forget the look of utter devastation on Caroline’s face. Slade is standing near the window, and Sage sits beside him. She’s watching me, and I know whatever she wants to say will piss me off.I don’t sit down. I can’t rest. Caroline is in the apartment. She’s safe. It is the only fact I allow to exist cleanly in my mind. Everything else is noise.Slade breaks it first. “You’re making a mistake.”My gaze flicks to him.He doesn’t flinch. “You can’t lock her away and pretend that solves anything,” he continues. “It doesn’t stop rogues. It doesn’t stop what’s already moving. It just isolates her.”“Isolates her from death,” I say flatly.“That’s not the same thing,” he replies.Something sharp passes through my chest, unwanted and irritating, and I don’t respond. I don’t want to continue the conversation.Sage shifts slightly behind him. “I’ve been reading,” she says softly. My attention snaps to her instantly. She’s a fucking gypsy fo
