Em

They were on the way to the grocery store when Asher said:

“I know you were planning a menu, before everything happened. I got it from Aspen.”

Em smiled at him.

“And I know you were wanting to make that .. treacle pie dessert because it was your dad’s favorite… but you couldn’t find the right recipe for the one he made….”

Em looked over at him. She had wanted to make her dad’s dessert that he always made at Thanksgiving but every pin on P*******t that had the recipe was wrong, and she even looked through all her moms cookbooks and couldn’t find it.

“So I’ve been on like twenty websites this morning seeing if maybe one of them had the right one… I bookmarked them all..”. Asher said as he handed her his phone.

So that’s what he was doing on his phone all morning? Em suddenly wasn’t roiling her eyes at Asher, instead they were filling with tears at his thoughtfulness.

“Asher….” She started, but couldn’t get the words out.

He looked at her and grinned.

“It’s no biggie baby girl.”

But it was. It was huge. Asher was always doing things like this. She didn’t know how she would ever repay him for everything.

When she first moved here, it had been Asher who constantly pulled her out of her slump. Asher who constantly made her laugh and smile… and comfortable. He had helped her so much without even realizing. And he kept helping her now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They were running around the grocery store like two kids that had just eaten buckets of candy. She was having so much fun she almost had forgotten everything, that is until she saw Finley standing at the end of an aisle.
Finley, who was Quinn’s ex. They’d been together since they were kids… he had been her protector before he was Em’s. His own brother had attacked her when they were younger. Finley had tried everything in her power to keep Quinn away from Em.. including orchestrating a meeting between her and her ex, River. But then when Em was kidnapped by Quinn’s brother, the same brother that had abused Fin, she had been the one who tried to save Em. She had apologized…. and they were trying to all move forward.
But it was a lot to navigate.
She smiled and waved at them, so Em awkwardly waved back as Asher mumbled from the side of his mouth: “I’ll distract her while you run”.
Em swatted him playfully and laughed. She walked down to where Finley was standing.
“Hi.” Em said to her.
“Hey, y’all shopping for Thanksgiving?” Finley asked.
“Yep. Well.. we’re having a Friendsgiving,” Em explained.
“My family all live in New York so …”
“Oh okay that should be fun.” Fin said.
She stood awkwardly for a moment and then said:
“I was kind of wondering what you all were doing. I didn’t even know if we would for sure have one or not but now since Quinn and the boys are com…”
“Wait. What?” Em interrupted.
“Yeah so they’re all coming and mom and her boyfriend. Plus Lennon and a couple of my friends so it’s gonna be a houseful “. Finley nervously laughed.
Em just looked at her, not knowing what to say. Quinn was going to eat at her house for Thanksgiving?? Why?
“Well we better get back to it. It was good to see you Fin.” Em said as she turned and walked off back towards Asher.
“You too!” Fin called after her.
It was hard to imagine that her and Finley could ever be close friends. But they had shared trauma. They each had similar pasts. And they both loved the same boy.
When she got back to where Asher was standing he was staring down at her.. like he was asking if she was okay or not.
“Asher. Why is Quinn going to Thanksgiving with Finley?”
“Ermmmm about that…..” he started.
“That’s why? That’s why we’re doing this? Is because he’s spending the holiday with her? Why didn’t you tell me?” Em was a little hurt that Asher had kept this from her. And she also felt a little bummed.
For some reason it bothered her that Asher did this because he knew Quinn wouldn’t be there.. and instead would be with Finley. She had thought he was doing it just out of the goodness of his heart and because he wanted to hang out with her.
But why did it bother her? What difference did it even make? She didn’t know… and she was confused about her feelings. Was she more upset that Asher hadn’t told her, or more upset about what Quinn was doing…..
Or both?
    Quinn He was in his outbuilding.. and he’d just finished with his last student of the day, a seven year old boy named Christian. His mother always dropped him off and picked him up. Quinn had wondered about the kid’s dad. Most of the students he had were around that age. Not that he had a ton of them. He’d only just started teaching MMA a few weeks ago and pretty much everyone he taught had signed up through his dad. His dad… although he was still pissed at him about all of this … had really stuck his neck out for Quinn. He’d bought the building and all the equipment and then brought him business. Quinn knew it was mostly because John wanted him to stop doing the underground illegal fights. But this certainly didn’t take the place of it … although it did help some. However Quinn couldn’t very well go around beating the shit out of his students. His dad was a very prominent lawyer. He knew a whole lot of people so he started spreading the word about Quinn teaching. And within ab
    EmEmerson had gone back to the twins house after her encounter with Quinn. She wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and stay there forever. But when she went downstairs to the basement to do just that… she found Aspen and Asher waiting on her. “Hey … guys …” she said deflated. “Em. Are you alright? Did something else happen?” Aspen asked her. Emerson sighed .. the longest and most pitiful thing she’d ever heard. “Yes. But I really don’t want to talk about it.” She told them. Asher nodded… a pained expression on his face. She felt bad that she’d advertently come between him and Quinn. They’d been best friends before all this. “We’ve noticed you’ve been down for the past few days. And we’re here to help.” Asher said grinning at her. “And don’t try to talk us out of it. You know that will only make us more determined.”Despite everything Em smiled at that. “Come on. We’re going to wrap presents!” Aspen said excitedly. Em agrees and decided to change clothes first. It was
    Emerson The next couple of days she stayed busy. She had school and then work. She went to the twins house then home to tuck Sawyer in. As much as she didn’t want to see Quinn at all… she wondered where he was. He hadn’t been at school one day. She knew that for a fact because she heard Elias talking about it in one of her classes. She assumed he was back the next day but she didn’t see him. She also hadn’t seen him at home any. She was getting ready for her weekly meeting with Mara. She’d been thinking about calling Evan. She could definitely use some of that calming effect he possessed. But she was kind of afraid to since he now knew she didn’t take his advice. She was actually surprised he hadn’t called her. Before Emerson moved.. and she was going to therapy with Evan at his office, he would still call and check up on her through the week. Of course those were during his office hours and he called from his office phone … not like now when she talked to him late at night
  • Catching the Moon (Chasing the Moon Book 2)   Chapter 34
    Emerson The morning after .. the phone call.. she felt worse than she had the morning after drinking all the bourbon. She wondered if Asher would bring her tomato juice and make that same breakfast again for her if she begged him to. Last night after Quinn called her and basically ripped her a new one .. she had cried. She cried for an entire hour. She cried about River and her dad and Huxley and Quinn. Then she cried about her mother and mostly about Sawyer. Had she really abandoned him? Was she being selfish by leaving? She didn’t think so. It was Quinn’s fucking fault in the first place. He’s the one that broke her heart into. He’s the one that won’t abide by any rules like bringing girls to her own house. Why didn’t she stick up for herself on the phone with him?She had been so taken aback by the things he was yelling and accusing her of that she couldn’t even think straight. He had made her feel completely and utterly awful about Sawyer.She loved her brother. But she didn’t
    Quinn He hadn’t seen Emerson since she caught him sneaking Zoe out of her house. And fuck he didn’t plan that shit. Quinn knew she told her mom and his dad … ‘their’ fucking parents now … that she didn’t want him having girls over. He understood it. Hell if she brought a guy over he’d be dead before anyone could blink. And it is her house after all. He wasn’t doing it to be an asshole… He just needed an outlet. And Zoe didn’t want to go back to her parents house where she was staying. The girl is 26 years old but she doesn’t live there. She lives a couple of hours away and was in town visiting. So he didn’t have much of a choice. But it wasn’t meant for her to see. Quinn guessed he paid for that shit dearly. When he got home today her mother said she’d left and was staying with the twins. He knew it was just next door but he also fucking hated that she wasn’t there . And he knows that was spurned by his having another girl over. He couldn’t blame her.. but it also meant she i
    Em“I’m staying at the twins for a few days.” She told her mother. Carol sighed and started shaking her head. “I don’t want you staying over there Em. We have some things to discuss as a family..” she said. “Well I don’t have anything I want to discuss. And I don’t want to stay here around Quinn. Didn’t we decide he wasn’t to have girls over? And he had a different one over here last night. I don’t want to see that mother. And I’m not going to punish myself by being around it. Now I’m not leaving forever but I need some space from him and from you. I’m just going next fucking door.” Emerson said. She felt bad immediately because her mother looked like she was ready to cry. But she had to be firm. “I wasn’t aware he had another girl over … I’ll speak to John ..” her mom said. Em scoffed. “What’s that going to do? He isn’t going to listen to his dad he’s lost all respect for him. and that happens to be y’all’s fault not Quinn’s.” Em said as she headed towards the door. “Emerso
