“Don’t be nervous, my parents are nice people. You'll soon see for yourself,” Arianna reassured me for the umpteenth time as we pulled up at their house. I nodded without replying as my mind was fixed on another issue. As soon as I opened the passenger’s side door to Ford, I regretted my choice of clothing. I was wearing my Ralph Lauren wool coat but I might as well be wearing a sheet of paper because the wind seemed to go right through me. “You okay, Beth?” Arianna asked. “You’re not cold, are you?” I turned to her to say no but then I saw her lips twitch and we both burst out in laughter together. “I'm such a fool, I should have taken your advice,” I said sheepishly looking at how snug she looked in her pink ski jacket and big boots. “Yeah, you should have, you mule,” She said, still giggling. “It's 9 PM, we're pretty late so let's go in.” We walked past the snow covered front lawn with our luggages, all the way to the front door. Thankfully, the porch had been largely shielded from the snow. We both shook snowflakes out of our damp blond hair and then Arianna rang the doorbell. The door swung open almost immediately and we were enveloped in warmth, both from the house and from Signora Rossi’s radiant smile. “Arianna, Elizabeth. We've been waiting for you both. We’re so glad you could join us for Christmas.” She pulled us both into a tight bear hug which felt so comforting after our long ride. She smelled of lemon and rosemary, and I breathed it in, surprised at her warm welcome. “Benvenuta! How was your journey?” Signora Rossi asked, finally freeing us from the hug. Before I could reply, Arianna squealed excitedly and ran into the arms of Signor Rossi, who had just appeared from behind his wife. He grinned widely and mouthed ‘welcome’ to me over the shoulder of his daughter. “Come in already. Dinner is already set,” He said in a gruff voice as he ushered me into the house which smelled more inviting the further I walked in. I was startled by a massive Saint Bernard who lumbered over and sniffed me curiously. It gave a bark when it sighted Arianna and ran to meet her. Bruno, the dog rejoined us after we had settled in and gathered around the dinner table. After Arianna said the grace, Signor Rossi carved the roast and we began eating. “Beth, you're quite famous. Those tweets about the mafia. You practically broke the algorithm and gained many followers, eh,” Signor Rossi said and I looked at Ari surprised that she had revealed that much to them. However, I could see that she was just as surprised as I was. Her father chuckled as he saw our expressions. “You think I'm not on Twitter? It's the most unfiltered and biggest news platform right now. I see the amount of death threats you get daily. You'll have to be careful while you're here though, this city is full of the Mafia.” I nodded then took a sip of orange juice to avoid talking. No use telling them that that was the main reason I came to Italy. Just so I could understand them more and see how they operated. “Not at the dinner table, you're making her uncomfortable,” Signora Rossi said in Italian not knowing I understood the language. “No, it's fine. My brother was killed by the mafia and he was the only family I had left which is why I hate them but I'll be careful.” The table fell silent and I could see how uncomfortable they all were. Ari was the most shocked as she was also hearing it for the first time. I never talked about my family. Mrs. Rossi reached across the table and squeezed my hand in comfort. “Oh, Elizabeth, we're so sorry to hear that,” she said, speaking on behalf of the family. “You can regard us as family. Our home is your home.” Under her motherly warmth, memories I had buried long ago surfaced and I forced a smile to keep them at bay. “Thank you ma'am for your kind words and generosity. Can I be excused? I need to use the restroom.” “Sure, it's the second door down the hallway,” Signor Rossi said warmly. My legs carried me down the hall to the bathroom and I splashed some water from the sink on my face to join the tears that had started streaming. I sat on the toilet seat as my body began shaking and it grew worse the more I tried not to dwell on it so I just sat there for some minutes. After some time, I heard a faint commotion from outside which jolted me to my feet reminding me that I needed to join them back at the dining table. “You weak pussy,” I berated myself in the mirror in a bid to pull myself together. “One day around a happy family and you're a mess. You'll go back there and smile like the strong lady you are.” Done with the self talk, I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand, arranged my dress then opened the door. The noise that hit me made me question if I had been magically transported to a market square. Apparently the door had been soundproof as I didn't hear anything while inside. There were angry yells in Italian and I was halfway down the hallway in confusion as I went to investigate when a loud sound paused me in my track, nearly giving me a heart attack. I didn't need anyone to tell me that it was a gunshot and I pressed myself against the wall instinctively as a thousand thoughts raced across my mind. The thought at the front of my mind was that the house had been broken into by thugs and I could only wonder why. “È solo una ragazza, non dovevi ucciderla!” Signora Rossi cried out and I covered my mouth in horror as I realized that Ari had been shot. There was an aggressive bark and the sound of a scuffle after that. It only lasted a minute before the gun went off again. This time, twice. I knew instinctively that Signora Rossi and the dog, Bruno had been killed too. There was no protest after that so I assumed that Signor Rossi had been the first to be killed before the others. “She’s in here somewhere. Find her,” one of the thugs said menacingly in Italian and my breath hitched as I realized that they were actually here for me. “Forget it,” another voice growled. “We need to skip. My boys will later scour the place and clean up the bodies.” There were sounds of retreating footsteps and I remained rooted in place until the door was shut and silence settled. I then forced myself forward which was hard as my legs were wobbling. I was afraid of what I was going to find as the metallic scent of blood grew stronger with every step I took. My eyes were blurry as I entered the sitting room and made my way to the dining. The first sight that greeted me was Bruno in a pool of blood with his intestines spread out all over the floor. I staggered backwards at the sight and before I could even gather my thoughts, a hand settled on my shoulder. As I made to turn to see who it was, the powerful hand stopped me, rendering me immobile. “Easy there, kitten, any sudden movement and I will blow your head with this beauty here.”Beth's POV Noah Sherlock had a very small frame for a High School Student. His cute face and unassuming expression made him seem harmless and even fragile to his classmates. As a result, he didn’t attract much attention in class. However, he was also a smartass who was recognized as a teacher’s pet, so he wasn’t liked by many.Since Noah was a smart student who always aced everything he set his heart to, he made a lot of people seem dumb in comparison. All of this culminated in somewhat average Karma Points for him. When it was time to choose his Skills and Class, he could only afford three Skills due to his limited resources.Shadow Magic (B-Tier)Phase (C-Tier)Projection (C-Tier)His Class on the other hand was pretty average as well. Beth's POV “Keuk!”Billy winced as something landed heavily on his stomach, the force of it creating a rush of wind even before impact.Fortunately, his quick step backward lessened the impact of the blow by a considerable degree.‘A-ahh…!’Still, a sharp burning sensation spread across his abdomen, making him grit his teeth to suppress a cry.It stung him, to say the least, but he endured the pain.He also tried to hide his downright shock, but Billy failed woefully at that. His bulging eyes were glued to Rey, who had resumed his standby stance—almost as if prepared to deliver another volley.‘D-did Rey just land a hit… on me?’ Billy stared in disbelief.Sure, Billy was aware that he lacked the advantage of using his incredible Skills, but his Stats were meant to be superior. How was Rey able to do something like that?!‘Calm down, Billy. He just got lucky. Yes… I was distracted and he had a lucky shot.’After chalking it down to a fluke, Billy found himself regaining composure. The

Beth's POV "Good morning, everyone! Sir Brutus won’t be here today, so I’ll lead your Martial Arts Class instead.”The shock written on everyone’s face as they stared at the person speaking was priceless. No one could have anticipated this outcome, leaving them all staring in wide-eyed surprise.“Adonis is busy with the Alpha Group, so I guess you’ll have to settle for me.” The one who said this, with a bright smile on his excited face, was none other than Billy McGuire. Both Head Warrior Brutus and Grand Mage Lucielle would be away for the next few days, and there was no one left to teach the students, so they had to teach each other.Initially, when this was announced, everyone assumed that training would be put on hold until their teachers returned. How wrong they were…“This has to be a joke, right? Why are you the one teaching us? You’re practically one of us!”As expected, Adam flared up in rage.It was as if he had been waiting for a moment like this where his anger would be
Beth's POV “This is the place.”Rey and Noah stood in front of a massive building—one of the biggest in the area.Of course, it wasn’t more than three storeys, but it was very wide.It was clear that a lot of activities went on in this building, and it wasn’t for the faint of heart.“You actually did business here?!” Rey was shocked that someone as timid as Noah had the gall to trade in such an intimidating structure.“W-well, I was approached by an affiliate who brought me here.”“A-ahh… that’s true.”According to Noah’s story, he was initially just looking for a place to sell the Monster Cores when he was approached by a guy who told him he’d help him sell the goods. This man then escorted Noah to the imposing building and guided him through the necessary procedures.‘That guy must be the one behind the scam’ Rey figured, connecting the dots. The company must have dealt directly with the so-called Affiliate, who in turn dealt with Noah.He probably pretended to be the seller and g
Beth's POV After the Trial, everyone went their way and Rey had to return to his room.Although he had the freedom to wander the central Living Room, he opted to stay put since he preferred not to.No one could blame him.As night descended and everyone else slept soundly, a certain student couldn’t sleep."Damn it…" He muttered, his eyes were wide open as he stared at the ceiling. Before long, he sat upright and clapped his hand over his face.“I screwed up big time…” He murmured in the dark.It was hard to make out the expression on his face, but it appeared to be a grimace. ‘I didn’t expect to be asked for another testimony. It wasn’t part of the plan…’In the dark of the night, Adam Sanchez lay on the bed going over the earlier events of the day.How he had been humiliated before everyone.“I really fucked up!”“Ahh… don’t blame yourself too much.” A voice suddenly said from the corner of the room.“Eep!”Like a little child, Adam shrieked as he jumped from his position, startl
Dorian's POVOnce I left Anna, I went back to my office with the knowledge that the board would be phoning soon. As usual, the call came in just a couple of minutes later. There was that slight calmness in the chairman’s voice, but it was tinged with disapproval.“Dorian, what’s this I hear about an announcement? A relationship with an employee?”I noticed myself counting to five silently before saying anything. As irritating as it is, I am only human and have to factor in the fact that there is a hierarchy that needs to be followed.I completely focused on the task at hand instead of the condescending tone that had come across. “Yes, as I’ve responded to the query raised by the employees in the office, I had to make it very clear in order for everyone to be on the same page and not create tension within the workplace.”“While I get what you are trying to say, there are some ethical issues and the risk of conflicting interests. The board will need reassurances.”“There is no project f
Beth's POVMy eyelids fluttered open as I looked in astonishment at my surroundings. It was the early hours of the morning and I tried to place where I was as I was in an unfamiliar place but I couldn't do so.The pressing thing on my mind was how badly my head was throbbing and the fact that I was in a strange bed that wasn't mine.I tried to get up which I immediately regretted as it only got worse and I collapsed back on the bed quickly.I had to be content with inspecting my surroundings from the bed and the first impression I got was favourable. Scary in a way but favourable.I was in a grand king sized bed which was just as spacious and majestic as the room. It was just as I imagined a British princess room would be. Everything from the wardrobe to the oval mirror screamed wealth and grandeur.Suddenly the events of the previous night flooded my mind and I gasped as I remembered all that happened. My hand instinctively went to my pocket to see if my phone was on me but it gra
Nico's POV In a few strides, I reached the car and forcefully pulled the door open. Beth shrunk back in fear as she saw my face. I wasn't smiling so I understood her reaction and it came as no surprise. From her reaction, she clearly knew that something was wrong. I looked at her hands and saw that she had put away the evidence which pissed me off further. “Where is it?” I asked, stretching a hand in her direction.“What are you talking about? Where is what?” She replied with an innocent face which further drove me over the edge.I heard my men come up behind me and before they spoke, I already knew that they were itching to beat her up.“Boss, should we search her body?”“Don't worry, I'll handle it myself. Clean up so we can go, the damage is already done.”They nodded in unison and left to do what I said. I looked back at Beth who was watching them and I banged my fist on the car door to get her attention.“We all know what you did and I called my men off so I'm going to ask you
