Chapter 6

"Where on earth have you been?!, I have been trying to reach you for two days now." Rhea's loud yelling made Diane pull the device from her ear as she fears losing her sense of hearing.

"I have been very worried, Michael was not picking up my calls too", she continued to rant.

" I'm so sorry, I have been occupied these days and I think Micheal didn't see your calls or he would have returned them". Diane lied smoothly to save herself from her enraged friend.

"So What's up". Diane asked as the other end grew silent. She has been trying to put her apartment in order for almost an hour now. She needed to do so if she intended to live here.

" Where are you, Diane?" Rhea asked, addressing Diane by her name which she hasn't done in a long time now.

"I'm home" Diane replied, pausing what she was doing.

"Which home?" She asked again, in a surprisingly low voice.

"Where are you?" Diane asked as she felt something was off with her friend.

"I'm at your house and after ringing the fucking doorbell for the fifth time a girl answered me. And she slammed the door shut after seeing my face". Rhea replied cussing.

" I am so sorry, I'm not there. I ..I am away on a business meeting " Diane replied stammering as she was about to get caught in her lies.

She doesn't want her best friend to know about her messed up love life now or she might break down again.

She is still trying to pull herself together.

"Where exactly are you?" Rhea asked again.

"I am coming to pick you up," Diane said ignoring the question

She got there almost an hour later, the sky was already dark and Rhea wasn't looking happy as she waited for her.

"What is going on?" She immediately asked as  Diane drove out of the driveway toward the highway.

She needs an answer.

Diane stalls for a minute before replying.

"We broke up," She said cockily, her voice choking a bit.

Rhea was so shocked that she had her mouth hanging open.

"Oh wow, I just saw the way down to your lungs" Diane teases as she watches her best friend reel in the shock.

Her shock was turning into  a look of pity which was what Diane was trying to avoid when she lied about her whereabouts.

"You are lying right?" Rhea asked but Diane narrated what happened and she became angry as she listened.

"It's over now, and I need a new job" Diane switches the conversation as she senses her friend's pitiful stare.

"Where do you want to work now?, or if you don't mind my boss is in need of a personal assistant and he is single and hot" Rhea said with an excited and mischievous look.

"No, I'm not interested. I have a degree in business administration not personal assistance. I only did  that with Michael because a lot of things were involved" Diane replied, turning down her crazy friend offer.

"Your apartment is a total mess" Rhea said as they entered the penthouse.

The apartment was richly decorated, it's style suits a man's taste rather than a woman but personal preference differs.

"Why do you decorate the whole place like a man's?" Rhea asked, scrunching her nose at the boring colours of the interiors.

"I'm a man, have you forgotten?

"I wanted to ask since I picked you up, have you been to find your patient that disappeared? Diane asked, suddenly catching Rhea off guard.

She has been worried and has been trying very hard to hide it but her asking now brought back the emotions.

" No, but my superior said he is fine. And I choose to believe that he truly is" Rhea replied in a depleted manner.

"I'm actually angry at him for leaving in that manner, he should know someone was looking after him at the hospital" Rhea said forgetting she has poured out her feelings to her friend.

"I thought you said you don't like him?Have you fallen in love with a stranger sweetie?" Diane asks with a glint in her eyes.

She is so excited to have discovered this.

Finally!, she had thought this crazy friend of hers is a piece of rock.

"Stop it, I'm not in love with him" Rhea said flushed with embarrassment. She had said a little too much.

"I believe you" Diane said while her eyes tell a different tale.

"I'm serious Diane!"

"I know and I'm not arguing".

Jeremy sat down lost in thought with piles of documents before him, he was trying to cover up for the time he spent at his friends place earlier the day. But he was far from focusing on the work as he still couldn't keep the woman out of his thoughts.

It's almost like she casted a spell on him and he is now bound to her.

A shrill ringing of a phone brought his attention back to reality.

He picked the call without checking to see who it was, he knew who it was.

"Hello Jeremy, hello…

Hello…'

The soft breathless voice from the other end irritates Jeremy.

"Speak, I'm here" He replied coldly.

"I'm coming home next month, Mom and Dad have missed me a lot and it's been years already. I'm calling to let you know" she said feeling helpless by his rigid voice.

"Okay" he replied, putting an end to the call.

He already knew about this and he doesn't care about it.

While pondering about his predicament, he came to a solution and decided to work on his plan immediately after the sun rose.

Once bitten twice shy they say but he doesn't mind being bitten again.

It took him a lot to come to this conclusion and he would invest all his strength in it to make it work.

He is a risk taker but not an unreasonable one either.

He would make it work.

He smiled to himself as the night swoly ebb away paving way for a new dawn.
