Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Vincent gave his wrist a little flourish, showing off the watch, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

Taking over some rich family's business? What heiress would let herself get pregnant before the wedding and hand the in-laws a scandal like that to laugh about?

And he'd called her my girlfriend. God, I was single. Where was this girlfriend supposed to have come from?

I frowned and dug through every memory I had, going all the way back to childhood, and came up with nothing resembling a girlfriend.

Carefully, I asked, "Which girlfriend of mine are you talking about, exactly?"

Dirk couldn't hold back a snort of laughter.

Vincent's brow furrowed. He'd clearly taken my question at face value, and now he was practically defending my nonexistent girlfriend's honor.

"Wow, playing the field with multiple women at once. Guys like you don't even deserve to compete with me. Once she has my kid, her whole family's fortune belongs to me and my son."

He kept going, bragging without pause. "Remember that trip to the Laurelwood two months ago? I guess I really was born to marry into money. Nailed it on the first try."

The Laurelwood?

I suddenly remembered that college friend's birthday party. But my "girlfriend" was a man. And we hadn't even gone to the Laurelwood that night.

So whose baby was it?

He'd been secretly watching me and peeking at my phone for a while before this. Had he walked into the wrong room and mistaken someone else for me?

A pregnancy wasn't something to brush off, especially not a mix-up like this. I couldn't ruin some girl's whole life over a joke I'd made once, so I opened my mouth. "This kid definitely isn't—"

He cut me off before I could finish. "Don't you dare whine at me. I'm not about to tell my girlfriend to get rid of the baby. You'd better cut things off with Liza right now, or I'll tell her all about you playing the field."

I let out a short laugh, my eyes going back to his watch and necklace. If that woman had already given him gifts like that, it meant they'd been in contact for a while. And if she was willing to carry his child, it meant she didn't care who he really was.

I'd been about to play the good guy and step in, which, in hindsight, was pretty foolish of me.

So I played along. "Since she doesn't care, don't blame me for not caring either. I'm blocking her right now. Congratulations, hope she gives you eight sons in one go."

He gave a smug little laugh. "Now you're getting it."

Then he swaggered back to his desk like he'd just won something. Dirk and Jimmy traded a look and, by unspoken agreement, kept their heads down and their mouths shut.

Ever since his girlfriend's pregnancy, Vincent had started acting like the most precious young master in the whole company. He was constantly ordering the rest of us around, even dumping parts of his own workload onto other people.

"Dirk, go get me some water, would you? The break room's too crowded, and I don't want to get my clothes dirty."

"Jimmy, print this file out for me. It's too far to walk, and my legs are killing me."

He carried his girlfriend's pregnancy test result around on purpose, strutting around the office all day putting on a show, sighing dramatically every so often.

"No wonder everyone says pregnancy is hard on both sides. I'm not even a dad yet, and I'm already a nervous wreck. All this stress makes a guy hungry.

"Mickey, I'm not a petty guy. I know you and my girlfriend had something once, but that's ancient history now.

"I've got a craving for a burrito from that food cart on Fifth Street. Go grab me one, would you?

"Get two eggs on it. Might help with the stress."

The moment Vincent saw us, his face twisted, vicious for an instant. "What are you here for? Come to laugh at me?"I nodded. "Pretty much."Vincent choked on that for a second, then roared. "You knew Sidney. You must have known she'd do this to me from the start! Why didn't you warn me?! "Are you happy now, seeing me end up like this?! I'm buried in debt because of her lies, and I'm going to be humiliated in here for the rest of my life! Are you happy now?!"Even after everything, he was still pinning the blame on everyone but himself. Beyond hopeless.I nodded even harder. "Very happy. Extremely happy."Bryan gave him a cold, flat look and stepped in front of me. Every bit of this was Vincent's own doing. But hearing me agree only set him off again, and he stumbled forward, lunging at me."This is your fault! If you'd told me sooner, I never would have ended up like this! It's all because of you, you animal!"This time, Dirk didn't even need to hold him back. Security, a

Vincent's face darkened for a second.Ever since getting fired, he hadn't been able to find another job that easy. Every company that looked at his résumé had turned him down, so he'd ended up working as a waiter at a hotel. But things were different now, or so he thought. He puffed his chest back up. "I'm not working anymore. My girlfriend's supporting me financially. She's the real deal, actual old money. She says she's bringing me home to meet her parents soon to talk about marriage." Then he shot me a smug, sideways glance.I found myself considering whether I should warn him about who Sidney really was. People outside our circle had no idea, but those of us inside it knew exactly what she was capable of. This was the kind of thing that had actually cost people their lives. Even so, Vincent had spent plenty of effort making my life miserable already, and he was already paying the price for that.Jimmy looked uneasy. "Vincent, this girlfriend of yours, she's not another Liza

Around then, Dirk sent me a video with a voice message. "Came by the hospital to change my bandages and caught quite the show. Thought you'd want to see this, sir."In the video, a heavyset middle-aged man was going at it with Vincent in a hospital room. More accurately, the man had Vincent pinned to the ground and was working him over, left hook, right hook. With his ribs still broken, Vincent had no way to fight back and just lay there, howling in pain. The rhythm of fists landing on flesh, punctuated by furious cursing, had a strange kind of beat to it.Liza stood off to the side, staring at the floor, her face bloodless.Security showed up before long. The video ended.Bryan let out a triumphant whoop. "Yes! That little rat had the nerve to call you a boy toy, when he's the real, undisputed boy toy here."I explained. "After everything happened, I tracked down Liza's husband's number, added him on a burner account, and sent him the company's security footage, then Vincent'

That reminded Liza of something, and she raised her voice, drowning out Vincent's. "Vincent! You're the one causing trouble here! You've dragged the whole company into this mess and set everyone's work back, and you think you can pay for that?"Forget the car, that luxury car was never mine! Go apologize to Mr. Bogarde right now, then get out of this company, or don't blame me for what happens next!"Hearing Liza admit, in her own words, that the luxury car had never been hers, Vincent finally believed the truth: she wasn't some wealthy heiress after all. He stood frozen, dazed, like he'd lost his mind entirely. Then, in the next instant, he lunged at her, grabbing her shoulders and shaking her, screaming, hysterical. "Why would you lie to me?! Why would you say the car was yours! I put up with everything just to serve you, but your whole background was fake!""Have you had enough yet? Vincent, you've completely lost it!" Liza and Vincent tumbled into a full-blown brawl in se

Only then did Liza remember. Vincent had come to her earlier, asking her to fire a coworker of his. She'd thought it was ridiculous and brushed him off without a second thought. She'd never imagined the coworker he wanted fired was Mickey Bogarde. A general manager, firing the boss's son? Not in her wildest dreams.Vincent was still making a scene, and Liza, at the end of her patience, rounded on him. "Are you done yet? Get out of this company right now! Go pack your things and leave!"Spit flew across Vincent's face, and he stood there, stunned. Everyone else was just as confused. Liza had always been the peace-keeping type, and seeing her lose her temper like this was startling. The second she finished shouting at Vincent, Liza's expression flipped with dizzying speed, and she turned to me, all flattery. "Mr. Bogarde, I'm so sorry. I never imagined my personal business would cause you this much trouble. I'll fire him immediately and handle this properly."Seeing her treat m

"I thought Mickey came from money. Turns out that watch and all his branded stuff came from being some rich woman's toy boy."I stood there without a word, curious to see how far Vincent was planning to take this.Sure enough, he turned around, tears still on his face, wearing an expression that said he thought he'd already won."Everything my girlfriend buys belongs to me. Let me have that watch and everything else she's bought you, and I'll consider forgiving you. Everyone makes mistakes, after all." He was playing the magnanimous, forgiving type again, but I had no intention of giving him what he wanted."You keep calling me the other man. Why don't we just call Liza out here and settle this face to face?"His expression flickered for a second. "Liza has a packed schedule. As the father of her child, I don't want to add to her burden."I'd been watching his face closely and caught every bit of that shift. In front of everyone, I raised my voice. "You think this isn't a b
