THREE

Adam

She was silent for a moment and then she said, "What is this, Adam? We haven't seen each other for decades and this is how you greet me?"

"I will give you the greeting you want if you answer my question, Fiona Beth," I whispered in his ear.

She chuckled and looked at me over her shoulders. "And it would take you a dagger to make me tell you whatever the hell it is you want to know? You have become weak, Adam."

I ignored her remark and pressed the dagger closer to her, enough to draw blood. She started thrashing. She knows very well I will never hesitate to drive the dagger straight to her heart and what it would do to her. I have done it before. A long time ago.

"You love your life so much, Fiona Beth. Now before I rob it from you, tell me what I need to know."

I know it wouldn't be easy to make Fiona Beth talk. She looked at me over her shoulder and spat.

"I don't even know what you're talking about--" She wasn't able to continue what she was about to say when I pierced the dagger to her skin. She gasped and tried to thrash.

"You know what happens when you move. The moment this dagger pierces your heart, you'll be asleep forever. And I am going to hide your body so that no one would be able to pull this dagger out."

"Why are you doing this?" she asked. I could sense it already. The fear.

I leaned closer to her and whispered in her ear. "Because you know something I don't and you're not telling me about it." I pressed the dagger an inch deeper and she groaned in pain. She was panting hard when I finally stopped. Then she looked at me.

"What is it that you want to know?" she asked, tears in her eyes.

"I am certain you've heard the rumors," I said.

"What rumors?" she hissed.

"Don't play dumb, Fiona. You know exactly what I am talking about. Otherwise, why would you be here in this city?"

She was silent for a moment. I kept the dagger on her back and then she sighed.

"I really don't know what you're talking about, Adam—"

I pressed the knife harder and she gasped.

"I would advise you to choose your next words carefully. If the words coming out of your mouth is not what I want to hear then this dagger pierces your heart." I made sure my voice contained enough bite.

She started sobbing. "Please," she said. "He will kill me."

It was all the answer I needed. I pulled the dagger and she gasped at that. I could hear her wounds healing fast. I threw her the blanket to cover herself before she faced me.

Tears stream down her cheeks as she rested her back on the wall.

"What did you do?" I asked because I know that she wouldn't be chased if she didn't do anything wrong. Especially to him.

"I got mixed up with the wrong people and now he is chasing me to make me a hostage."

I lifted an unimpressed brow. "Hostage? Against whom?"

"Against Juris," she answered. I narrowed my eyes as I looked at her, trying to piece the information she gave.

"You got deeply involved with Juris. Deep enough that Niklaus thought you'd be a valuable hostage," I said and she looked down. It was enough confirmation for me.

"I love Juris, Adam," she said as she looked up.

"And look where that love got you." I looked at the clock inside her room. I still only have less than half an hour to get back. Shit.

"Come to the villa tomorrow and face my father. Tell him what you know and he will offer you protection against Niklaus."

"What if your father won't give that to me? What happens then?"

I did not bother to fix my shirt. I looked at her and said, "You have to pray to your gods that my father will accept you. Otherwise, I won't be able to do much."

I did not wait for her to sob and immediately disappeared. I couldn't stay long. It is almost midnight and I need to get back. I got what I wanted to get and it is the information that my father desperately seeks.

Rumors turned facts. Niklaus is indeed back and I know my father won't rest easy with this news.

I don't think that I will too. As the next family head, Niklaus would also pose a problem for me. I muttered a silent curse.

"Excuse me," said a voice behind me but I ignored it. I can't be wasting any more time when it's almost midnight. I walked faster.

But I was stopped in my tracks when someone grabbed the hem of my shirt. I whirled to see who it was and was ready to attack when I realized who it is.

She squinted her eyes as if trying to figure out who I am. After a few seconds, her face lit up in recognition.

Damn. Why do I have to get seen now? And why does it have to be this woman?

"Aren't you in my class—"

"I might be. Sorry, I don't know you," I said and turned away quickly. I lied. I definitely know her. She is my class partner for devil's sake! What on earth is she doing here? She looked drunk.

I was almost ten steps away when I heard her running in my direction. She grabbed my shirt again.

"What is it?" I asked in frustration.

She was panting for air and handed me something. "I don't care if you don't remember me or not. I want to give this to you. You dropped it earlier." She grinned.

She handed me the single button from my shirt. I gave her a confused look and she waved a dismissive hand. Then her eyes traveled to my exposed torso before her gaze went back to mine.

"Have a fun night," she said and turned to walk away. I was about to walk away when my heart ratcheted into a thunderous beat. I paused, eyes widening.

No, it can't be. It's not yet midnight. It shouldn't come yet.

I swallowed hard but tried to blink many times but it was futile. My vision blurred and everything around me heightened. I could hear everything and smell everything, including the girl's scent and her ragged breathing as I saw her running in my direction again. I didn't realize I was already kneeling on the ground.

Run, you idiot.

I wanted to scream and tell her to run but I couldn't form the words. Beads of sweat started forming on my forehead and I knew what was coming next.

Before I could even name it, the hunger came. It was so intense and I thought I could lose my mind. Vampires drink blood. And I am a vampire. Not just an ordinary vampire but a cursed one.

I get this insatiable hunger when midnight strikes and I couldn't control myself. But I don’t understand why I am having the feeling now when it’s not yet midnight. I looked at the girl in front of me, wearing a worried look on her face. Her name’s Annalise, a new student. And if she doesn’t run away right now, she’d be my victim.

Fuck.

Then I felt my hands gripping her soft skin, I couldn't do anything but watch the horror in her eyes as she stared back at me. I think she wanted to scream but couldn't bring herself to.

My gaze went from her face to her slender neck and the tender base. My heart thundered at the sight, at the rapid pulse I could hear from it. She was nervous and it caused her heart to beat wildly.

Fear etched her eyes as she was looking at me. I don’t know what she’s seeing in my face but I couldn’t care less.

I heard her say please but I didn't care. I was a monster and I couldn't stop. So when my fangs pierced her neck, all I could think of was the delicious taste of her blood and nothing else.
