CHAPTER 43: THE HOWLING WOODS

last update Last Updated: 2025-08-13 02:30:19

I anxiously wait for any update about Orvyn and Gautnier’s whereabouts, praying and begging the Moon Goddess not to let my fears come true.

The royal guards assigned to accompany Orvyn everywhere he goes, even if he’s just roaming within the palace’s walls, are in a complete panic. None of them realized he had slipped out of his room and left the palace.

If anything happens to Orvyn, they will be the first to be blamed and punished.

But at last, we get a lead from one of Orvyn’s maids. It takes time, effort, and even threats before she finally confesses what she overheard.

“His Majesty mentioned Howling Woods while talking to a royal guard named Yael,” she says.

Howling Woods?! It’s a dangerous forest where unseen predators, like orcs and ogres, may be residing according to legend. That’s also where the corpses of the kingdom's most notorious criminals are being dumped as offerings to those orcs and ogres, so they won’t need to get out of that forest to hunt for food.

“If the regime is to be changed, then I’ll be happy to become your new king!” Gautnier declares. Some show disbelief and worry, others light up with hope. One hand rises, then ten. Soon, almost half of the members of the royal court have their hands up in favor of Gautnier’s clamor. Only the leaders of the Frostveil Pack and the Bloodbane Pack are firmly intact behind Orvyn. Orvyn keeps his face neutral, but I feel the slight tremor in his hand under mine. Orvyn is right: being king is Gautnier’s true aim! And what if he’s also right about him being behind the concubinage sabotage and framing me? I need to speak with Yael and see if he knows more than he said earlier.Suddenly,...Queen Aurora steps forward, her glare locked on Gautnier. “Can you cite in what part of the constitution you can overthrow a crowned king based only on a few mishaps?” “None,” Gautnier answers confidently. “But that doesn’t mean a regime change isn’t possible, especially if many members of the royal co

I stir awake, a sharp pain shooting through my body with even the smallest movement. Forcing myself to sit up, I call out Orvyn’s name as fragments of what happened before I passed out rush into my mind. Almost at once, Orvyn rushes to my side. His face is a mix of worry and relief. Patches and gauzes cover parts of his face and arms, and he’s already in his human form. It’s when I realize that we’re back in the palace, in the clinic specifically. He embraces me gently, careful not to hurt me. “I’m sorry. Not only did I worry you, but I also hurt you.”I wrap my arms around him too. “Don’t be reckless next time. And don’t you dare go to that forest again. Orcs are real, and probably ogres too! What if…”He hushes me, pressing his thumb to my lips before kissing me softly. “Don’t worry. I was prepared when I got there. Both creatures are scared of firecrackers,” he says with a smile, then follows it up with, “I was told how you outsmarted the orcs, and I couldn’t be more proud of

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 42: THE SILVER-HAIRED WOLVES

THALISSIA’S POV: I grab my handkerchief and wipe my lips over and over until the skin burns. But it doesn’t erase the memory of Gautnier’s kiss, or the repugnant feeling it leaves behind. I turn to the maids and the court ladies. “I hope you don’t misinterpret what happened between me and Gautnier earlier. I don’t want that to be another issue against me.”“We saw and we heard everything, Your Highness. It’s clear to us that it isn’t your fault,” Daphne says. Amelia and the others nod in agreement, which eases me a little.A moment later after I enter my bedroom, Queen Elowyn, Alpha Heath, and Beta Eckbert appear at the door. I consider sending them away since I already have a couple of unhealthy encounters for today, but they push inside without my approval. The guards, court ladies, and maids only look at me apologetically as they try to remind them about the royal protocol, which they vehemently ignore.“All of you, step away from this room until we leave,” Queen Elowyn orders.

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 41: IT'S HIM

GAUTNIER’S POV: Thalissia’s love for Orvyn grows stronger each day. This makes her even more unsure about leaving him, let alone distrusting him. All my plans for her escape are wasted. She told me she’s not leaving him until she makes his life a living hell. I doubted she could do it, but I had to let her do what she thought she needed to do. And now it’s clear: she’s all words and no actions because her love is much stronger than her hatred towards him.I wanted to convince her that Orvyn cannot be trusted and that I’m the one she truly needs by confessing my feelings to her.However,...It went further than I meant it to.“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you. I was… carried away,” I say, my voice almost begging, which is something I’ve not heard in years. I try to reach for her again, but she steps back with force. Her eyes hold disgust and disappointment. I don’t expect she’d suddenly form a mate-bond with me from that confession, but I also didn’t expect she’d react like

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 40: INTERROGATION GONE WRONG

The results of the initial investigations spread across the main palace like wildfire. Almost everyone looks at me and whispers behind my back, as if I’m a criminal being defended by an unfair king. I try to keep my head high while facing them, but their presence still crawls under my skin.Daphne, Amelia and the maids are interrogated earlier today, and all of them deny any knowledge and involvement of putting the explosives and the can of paint in my bedroom. The only positive thing that came out of their interrogation is that all of them vouched for my innocence, that they never heard me say or saw me do anything suspicious.I ask for a moment of respite: to cry and to think alone in my bedroom. The only one I want near me right now is Orvyn. But he is currently being interrogated by the royal court for his choice to investigate me further while convicting Victoria without hesitation.Hours pass so fast. And as much as I wanna keep hiding here, I can’t, coz it’ll only give them m
