Lolly’s POV

~ONE YEAR LATER~

“I can’t believe we were invited to the party of the decade!” Cindy cooed excitedly.

She turned over the exclusive invitation.

I saw the invitation clearly from my position on the ladder where I stood dusting the chandelier. It was gold-embossed.

The name ROMAN STONE jumped out to me.

“I’m more surprised he finally opened up that home of his to the public,” my stepmother, Lizzy, said. Lizzy sat on the couch, watching her daughters tussle over the card.

“Give it here!” Mindy said, snatching it from Cindy.

“I’m not done with it!” Cindy retorted. They fought over it, their bodies hitting the ladder in the middle of the living room, and almost throwing me off.

I held onto the shaking ladder as firmly as I could so I wouldn’t fall. My cleaning towel fell to the floor. I climbed down the ladder slowly, avoiding my sisters to pick it up.

“Urgh, you are still here? How long does it take to actually clean a simple chandelier?” Lizzy snapped at me. My stepsisters stopped fighting and turned their attention to me.

“She’s really the laziest maid in this house. She can never get anything done!” Cindy said with a scoff.

Mindy fell into the couch nearby, clutching the invitation that she had finally managed to wrest out of her sister’s hand. “Cindy, what are we going to wear to this ball?”

Lizzy picked up her teacup, taking a short sip. “Don’t worry sweetie, I’ve already sent word to your stylists. You’ll look your absolute best for this ball.”

Cindy drew closer to her mother. “So, it’s true? He’s looking for a wife?”

Mindy let out a loud, exciting screech. “Can you imagine, Cindy? What if he chooses one of us?”

Cindy rolled her eyes. “It’s obviously going to be me!”

Mindy cocked her head to the side, petulantly. “Why you? He’s going to choose me!”

Their mother had to step in before the fight got ugly again. “Girls, girls, I don’t care who he chooses just as long as it’s one of my girls. Come here,” she said.

The girls scooched over to her. Lizzy touched their faces. “Look at you, you are both so pretty. I bet he’ll fall in love as soon as he lays eyes on you two. Now, remember, Roman Stone is the wealthiest man in Empire City. We need to make a good impression. A good impression, girls!”

I lingered in the background, listening to them. The only question on my mind: Who the hell was Roman Stone and why were the girls obsessed with him?

For the past year or so, I’ve only heard them talk about Roman. The elusive, mysterious billionaire.

New to Empire City, but he had already edged out his competitors to become one of the richest men.

His conglomerate, Stone Enterprises, had a giant skyscraper uptown but no one had ever seen him.

I’ve heard people call him a vampire, a stone-cold player. He was ruthless, but people rarely see him in his physical form.

Until tonight.

I hurried away to the kitchen to join the rest of the maids.

Rue, my best friend, was eating a freshly-baked cake when I entered.

“Did you hear them talking about the party?” Rue asked.

The kitchen was abuzz all week with news of the party. They won’t stop talking about it.

Rue was hyped up. “I would sell my left kidney to be in that party!”

I scoffed. “You’d sell your left kidney for anything, Rue.” ‘

Rue rushed over to me. “Do you think your one-night stand will be there?”

I froze. It’d been a year since that mind-blowing night. I still dreamt about him.

I can still smell him.

Sometimes, I really regret slipping out the next morning.

I never saw him again yet I miss him every single day.

“The whole point of a one-night stand is to never see each other again, Rue,” I told my bestie.

“I know, I know, but you’ve been talking about that guy ever since. Always going on about what a wonderful night that was. No one forgets their first time especially if it was good as you say it is,” Rue went on.

“Rue, please, we have to get to work.”

“No, think about it. Everyone’s going to be at this party. I bet a thousand bucks your guy’s going to be there too!”

I thought about it for a second. She might be right. The cream of society was going to be at the party which meant there was a small chance I might run into my stranger again.

“Think about it, Lolly, this is your only chance to infiltrate high society and find Mr. Prince Charming!” Rue pressed on.

Lowering my voice, I snapped. “Lizzy’s going to be there. So will her daughters. What if they see me there?”

“It’s a masquerade ball. Everyone’s going to be on disguise anyway.”

Knowing my best friend, she would not let on until I give in to her plan.

“I’m not saying I’d go but even if I were, how would I do it? I don’t have an invite,” I told Rue now.

Rue rubbed her hands deliciously. “I thought you’d never ask. I know a maid over at the Stone mansion who’ll let us in. And before you ask, I already picked out the perfect dress and mask for you. I was just waiting for you to say yes!”

Rue worked a second job as an assistant for one of the most famous stylists in Empire City.

“You’ve thought about everything,” I said, hugging her.

“All I’m asking is for you to have fun, bring back some cake for me and make sure you come back at midnight so I can return everything I’m lending you for this party, okay? I’m not kidding. You need to be home by midnight or I’m gonna lose my job!”

I was nervous. Could I really find my prince charming in that sea of eligible, powerful men? I don’t know.

“Lolly! Where the hell is that stupid girl? It’s time for my bath!” Lizzy’s annoying voice carried into the kitchen.

Rue and I exchanged glances.

Am I really going to be stuck here, taking care of my stepmother forever? I deserve a little fun and happiness!

“Screw it, I’m going to that party!”

  • Cinderella's Revenge    TWO YEARS LATER

~Lolly's POV~ TWO YEARS LATER "Lolly!!! Oh my God, I missed you so much!" Rue screamed, throwing her hands around my neck! The airport was busy. Crowds of travelers shoved past us but she didn't care. She hugged me tight. In two years since I left, Rue had changed so much! For one thing, her belly was protruding with pregnancy. A princess-cut diamond ring shone from her finger. I was stunned. "When did this happen!?" I asked, gesturing to her belly. "I would've told you if you actually bothered to leave a returning address behind before you abandoned me!" she retorted sharply. I saw on her face that she was still hurt by my sudden departure. "I didn't have a choice, Rue. I had to leave. Lizzy forced me to leave that same night we tried to crash Cindy's date. I had to go to protect you!" Rue interlocked her hand with mine. "It's fine, babe, I'm not mad at you. I figured as much. I'm just happy that you're back here! There is so much I want to tell you!" We wal

  • Cinderella's Revenge    No choice

~Lolly’s POV~ Cindy threw her hands around Roman’s neck, deepening their kiss. Roman had his hands around her waist, returning her kiss with shocking passion. I felt crushed as I watched them. A pang of jealousy spread down my spine. I was too late. He wanted her. How stupid was I to think that I could crash their date and get him to remember me? We had sex one time and danced together once. It wasn’t enough to make him remember. But what if he didn’t remember because he hadn’t seen me yet? I could hear Rue’s voice in my head telling me to crash the date. I sat at the engine, thinking. This was my only chance. My last chance. Just as I was about to open the car door, my phone rang. A loud ringing that startled me. Rue. Excitedly, I pressed the green button. “Rue, I think I made a mistake!” I exclaimed as soon as I pressed the button. “That’s right. You’ve made a big fucking mistake, Lolly!” my stepmom’s voice came through the phone. Instantly, my heart dropped.

  • Cinderella's Revenge    To crash a date

Lolly’s POVRue slapped the door hard. “Stop feeling sorry for yourself and start doing something to take back your life. Are you seriously going to stand here, moaning and crying, while they win again?”Rue’s voice snapped me out of my misery and self-pity. “Yeah, you’re right. You are right. I can’t let them win again! But how am I supposed to stop them? Cindy’s going out on a date with Stone. Knowing my stepmother, she’s going to try relentlessly to marry the girls off to Stone.”Rue tapped the door again. “We can’t let that happen. You were the girl he danced with. He came all this way to find you. You need to let him know, at least.”I bobbed my head in agreement. “Okay, so what do we do?”At first silence. Then came Rue’s excited voice. “We are going to crash their date!”I nearly combust with shock. Rue was always the brave one. She was always full of ideas, but this might be the worst one yet.“Crash their date? In case you forgot, I am not allowed to leave the house.”“Okay,

Lolly’s POV“Why did it have to be you? It could’ve been me! I should’ve been the one. She beat me to it before I could say anything,” Mindy started to whine as soon as Mr. Stone left the house.Cindy threw her head back, laughing. “You snooze; you lose. Did you really think I was going to just stand there and let you have him? He’s a fucking billionaire! He’s mine now!”Mindy charged at her sister. “You conniving, sneaky bitch!”Their mother had to step in to stop them. “Girls, girls, it doesn’t matter who gets him. The fact is…we are in! We have a golden opportunity here and we cannot lose it. I don’t care who he chooses. Hell, you can both share him when the matter is settled. The only thing I care about is...securing his partnership. Do you understand?”The girls nodded obediently. Mindy lit up with excitement at the prospect of sharing another man with her sister. Their weird twin bond always freaked me out. Since they were kids, they had always shared everything: from clothes do

He walked with purpose, like a man used to paths opening up for him.All eyes were on him.My stepsisters crooning with barely-contained excitement. My stepmother stood straighter, dignifying themselves.I hid behind them, waiting for the right moment to sneak out. He cannot see me like this. Not like he would recognize me in my maid’s outfit anyway. His scent grew stronger as he drew closer and closer. I was practically jelly in the knees. That powerful, familiar scent paralyzed me.He stopped right in front of my stepfamily merely a few inches away from my stepsisters.“Mr. Stone, what a pleasure it is to host you in our home,” said my stepmother, Lizzy.“Yes, Mr. Stone, it is an honor to have you here,” Mindy chirped in her ultra-soft voice.“Mr. Stone, I am delighted to welcome to our home,” added the second stepsister, Cindy.I sensed the competition rising between them right away. Lolly’s POV I nearly gasped when I stepped into the ball. The beautiful interior design, lighting, the enchanting music, the guests all dressed flamboyantly made me feel like I’d just stepped into heaven. I was breathless at the beauty of it all, and thankful to Rue for forcing me here. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Some of the guests were dancing. I moved through the crowd, keeping a low profile. Even though everyone wore a mask, I was still afraid I’d run into my stepfamily. “Who do you think is Mr. Stone?” I heard some ladies behind me muster. “Do you think that’s him?” another pointed out a broad-chested man on the dance floor. “No, he is not…charming enough. I don’t think Mr. Stone’s at his own party?” Ah, I thought, the elusive Mr. Stone continues to be elusive? I meandered through the crowd, taking note of everything. Mr. Stone’s mansion was bigger than everything I’d ever seen. The walls were covered with expensive art. I stalked the li
