Selene~
A text came in at sunset again from the same number.
Dominic: You might want to wear something stunning. A car will pick you up at eight.I stared at the message, my fingers gripping the phone tighter than necessary.
This was insane. Why had I agreed to this? Why had I accepted an invitation from a man I barely knew—one whose name I hadn’t even learned until this morning when the hotel concierge where I lodged mentioned it?Dominic.
A powerful name. A commanding presence. A man whose touch had erased my pain for one reckless night.
But that was all it was supposed to be—one night.
And yet, here I was, standing in front of my vanity mirror, slipping into a dress I hadn’t worn since before my marriage crumbled.
The deep red silk hugged my curves like a second skin, the thigh-high slit scandalous enough to turn heads.
For once, I wanted to be seen. Not pitied. Not broken.
I inhaled sharply, pushing down the nerves.
Who was Dominic? And why had he sought me out again?
I intended to find out. Just then, the sound of a car hummed just as I walked out, a man dressed in black suit looking like a bodyguard, stepped out of it, opening the car door for me and I hopped in. In minutes we zoomed off and by the time we arrived, I hadn't realized it. The charity gala was held at one of the most exclusive grand halls in the city, the hall was a masterpiece of glass chandeliers and gold-trimmed elegance. I stepped inside, my heels clicking against the polished marble, and I felt the weight of a hundred gazes settle on me. Let them look. A waiter offered me a glass of champagne, and I took it, lifting my chin as I scanned the crowd. Until I saw him. Dominic stood near the bar, dressed in a tailored black suit that screamed money and power. He looked completely at ease, one hand in his pocket, his piercing gaze locked onto me the second I entered. A slow, knowing smile curved his lips. My stomach tightened. I forced my feet to move, weaving through the sea of glittering gowns and expensive cologne until I reached him. “You clean up well,” I said, my voice steady. “So do you,” he murmured, his eyes traveling over me in a way that sent a shiver down my spine. I sipped my champagne, trying to ignore the way my pulse skipped under his scrutiny. “Why did you invite me?” His expression shifted, but his smile didn’t waver. “I thought it was only fair,” he said smoothly. “Since I left before I could properly introduce myself that night.” I swallowed. “ So you're Dominic.” He inclined his head. “And you, Selene.”My grip on the glass tightened. “So you still know my name, thought you would forget.”
“I made it a point not to.”
The intensity in his voice sent a thrill through me—one I wasn’t sure I liked.
“Why?” I asked.
His smirk deepened. “I don’t let interesting things slip away so easily.”
A spark of something dangerous flickered in his eyes, and for a moment, I felt like a pawn on his chessboard—a piece he had carefully positioned.
Before I could press further, a burst of laughter rang through the room. And then, I saw them. Adrian. And Lina. Together.
Lina was draped over him like a second skin, her fingers tracing his chest possessively as if she hadn’t stolen him from me—as if I had never mattered. The sight of them was like a blade to the chest.
My breath hitched, fingers trembling around my champagne glass.Dominic noticed.
He leaned in, his voice a whisper against my ear. “Does it still hurt?”
I swallowed hard, hating that the answer was yes.
But instead of admitting it, I turned my head slightly, our faces inches apart.
“No,” I lied. Dominic chuckled. “Liar.” Minutes passed in a blur of small talk and forced smiles. Dominic kept me close, his presence a steady anchor against the rising storm inside me. But the moment Adrian spotted us, I knew things were about to shift. His eyes narrowed, his jaw tightening as he excused himself from Lina’s grasp and stalked toward us. “Selene,” he greeted coldly, his gaze darting to Dominic before settling back on me. “I didn’t expect to see you here.” I tilted my head, offering a mocking smile. “Why? Did you think I’d lock myself away and cry over you for decades?” His lips pressed into a thin line. Lina appeared at his side, her saccharine smile grating. “You look… lovely tonight, Selene.”I ignored her. Instead, I turned to Dominic, who had remained silent but watchful.
“You never told me how you know Adrian,” I said casually. A muscle in Adrian’s jaw. Dominic smirked. “I suppose it’s time for introductions then,” he said smoothly. Then, with a lazy confidence that sent my pulse racing, he slid his arm around my waist. “Adrian is my younger brother.” My stomach dropped. The words tilting like a blur. For a moment, I thought I had misheard him. "Your brother?” I Adrian stiffened. Lina’s eyes widened. But Dominic? He simply watched me, waiting for the realization to sink in. I had slept with Adrian’s brother. Oh. My. God. I took a sharp step back, my breath coming too fast, too shallow. Dominic caught my wrist. “Breathe, Selene.” I yanked my hand away, my mind racing. “You knew?” His gaze didn't falter “Yes.” I felt sick. “You knew, and yet you—” “I didn’t plan it,” he interrupted, his voice firm. “But once I realized who you were, I think I saw an opportunity.” My heart pounded. “Opportunity? Am I an opportunity? Is that why you invited me here?” I felt a pile of anger surge through me but Dominic’s next words sent a chill down my spine. “I despise Adrian.” I blinked, caught off guard by the venom in his voice. He took a step closer, his presence consuming. “And I know you do too.” I clenched my fists. “That doesn’t explain why I’m here.” A slow, deliberate smile spread across his lips. “No, but this will.” He leaned in, his breath warm against my skin. “Marry me.” My world stopped. “What?” Dominic’s gaze burned into mine. “Marry me,” he repeated, his voice dangerously calm. “For a year.” I shook my head, staggering. “You’re insane.” But he didn’t back down. “Give me a child, Selene.” My pulse spiked. I parted my lips to speak—to argue, to refuse—but he wasn’t done. “In return, you'll get revenge on your ex-husband and best friend.” The words hung between us, heavy, suffocating. I stared at him, my heartbeat pounding in my ears. This was insanity. This was madness. But…I looked at Adrian. At Lina. They weren't sure what Dominic had whispered in my ear. And for the first time, revenge tasted sweeter than fear. Dominic’s voice rose a bit higher now, coaxing, irresistible. “What do you say, Selene?” The world held its breath.Selene's POV The knock barely registered before the door creaked open, slow and deliberate, like the world knew I didn’t need another surprise, but was offering me one anyway. And then there he was. Emiliano Vieri. He stood framed in the doorway like some living contradiction charming and out of place, yet somehow blending perfectly into the chaos that was my life lately. His dark hair was tousled, his gray coat casually thrown over a crisp shirt, collar slightly upturned from the breeze. But it was his eyes steel and unflinching that held me in place. My lips parted slightly. “What—! How... how did you know where I live?” He didn’t look guilty. If anything, he looked amused. “I didn’t,” he said with a low chuckle, stepping inside and closing the door behind him. “I live in the estate across the block. I was just on my way back from the grocer’s when I saw you and your friend walking in this direction. Didn’t know it was your place.” My brain scrambled for logic. Coincid
Selene’s POV The walk home felt longer than it should have. Rachel kept stealing glances at me, and I knew what was coming before her lips even parted. “So,” she began carefully, “are you going to tell me who she was? That woman?” I didn’t answer immediately. My fingers were cold, even though the afternoon sun still lingered on the street. “Selene,” Rachel pressed, matching her pace to meet mine. “Was she someone from you know before?” Before. That word held too much. Before the scars. Before I remembered what it meant to fight for air in your own life, in your own home. “She was...a friend,” I said eventually. Rachel frowned. “A friend who looked like she wanted to eat you alive and then hug you at the same time?” I gave a dry laugh. “You’re not far off.” We passed the corner florist, the scent of lavender and soil rushing out toward us. A delivery van rumbled by, honking once as it dodged a cyclist. “She was involved with my Ex-husband,” I finally said, watching a pair of
Selene’s POV“Rachel I can't tell anything for now,” I said as we rounded the next block, “you don’t have to worry. Everything will be fine.”It felt like a lie, because it was. Nothing ever really stayed fine in my world. But sometimes, when your friend looks at you with fear swimming behind her eyes, you have to lie beautifully. She smiled faintly, nodding. “Okay. I trust you.”I didn’t trust myself. We stopped in front of a small bakery, its window fogged slightly from the warmth inside. It smelled like cinnamon buns and almond tarts and soft crusted loaves, and for a moment, it was easy to pretend we were just two normal girls. Just two women on a stroll, browsing for sweets, not caught in the orbit of cold-eyed men.Rachel pushed the door open, the bell above tinkling softly, and we stepped inside. Then my blood turned cold. There, standing by the display case like she belonged in my memory and not this reality, was Lina.Lina.My ex-best friend. My ex-husband’s mistress. His con
Selene's POV My next words fell like bricks. “He’s Dominic’s personal bodyguard. His right hand man, he's been for years.” "I can't believe it, you mean Enzo?" she murmured, her voice barely audible. "Enzo... Dominic's right-hand man Sel?." I looked up, meeting her eyes. "You had no idea?" She shook her head, her expression a mix of shock and confusion. "I just thought he was some mysterious guy I met, he was always so reserved, but there was something about him I can't place my hands on... Rachel went white. “What?” I nodded slowly, leaning back into myself. “He's always around Dominic, his tight man. Yesterday too, he’s always close but never speaks unless he has to. Completely loyal. The kind of man who could kill a person with a single command from his boss.” She sank beside me. “You’re joking.” “I am not Rachel.” Rachel went quiet, staring at her hand like it had betrayed her. “He didn’t seem like... that.” “They never do trust me, I don't even want you to get
Selene's POVYou didn’t tell me you’d be working with Emiliano Vieri."Dominic’s voice cut through the cabin like a wire, cold and controlled.I leaned back, gripping the smoothie in my hand tighter. “That’s because I’m not.”His gaze didn’t waver. “He offered you a card, you took it, I watched it happen.”Rachel shifted beside me, clearly trying not to draw attention to herself. The silence between us thickened, stretching too long, and I finally looked him in the eye.“And I didn’t accept his offer.”Dominic’s jaw flexed once. He didn’t blink. “Good.”Then came the shift, the one I hated. He tilted his head slightly, his eyes like a sharp knife, pressing in.on me. “But we still need to talk about the deal. The marriage.”Rachel’s sharp inhale was loud in the cabin. “Wait—what?”I didn’t look at her. My eyes stayed on him. “My answer hasn’t changed, Dominic.”He paused. A slow blink from him, maybe wondering my firmness on my decision.“Still no,” I added. “Even if your father’s brea
Selene’s POV I didn’t have time to process much. I threw on my black jeans, a clean blouse, and a soft cream blazer. No makeup. Not a single stroke. I didn’t care how I looked. I just needed air and maybe a sense that my life was mine again. The car that picked us up was already waiting at the corner. Rachel stayed close, practically glued to my side as if she thought I might disappear again. I didn’t have the heart to tell her I felt exactly the same. By the time we arrived at the media house, I wasn’t ready for what waited. The second I stepped out of the car, the chaos hit me.There was flashing lights, shouts and journalists. A crowd of cameras and reporters surging forward like they’d been lying in wait just for me. “Selene! Over here!” Rachel said, trying to help me weave in through the crowd. “Are you the official face of the Youth Conference?” “Miss Selene, are you currently in a relationship?” “How does it feel to be a public figure overnight?” “Is it true you had a c
