KIMANI

After dinner, the house felt unusually calm—softer somehow, warmer than usual. Maybe it was the smell of roasted chicken still floating faintly in the air, or the sweetness of the cupcakes cooling on the counter. Maybe it was the quiet jazz humming through the lounge speakers. Or maybe it was just him.

I curled up on the couch, my head resting on Alaric’s lap. One of his hands lay on my shoulder, the other idly stroking my hair in slow, absentminded motions that felt far more intimate than anything physical we had ever shared. His touch was gentle, rhythmic, almost protective, like he didn’t even realize he was doing it.

My eyes were half-closed, but I was very aware of him—his steady breathing, the warmth of his thigh under my cheek, the rise and fall of his chest each time he exhaled. The feeling was peaceful. Too peaceful.

Maybe that’s why, after minutes of comfortable silence, the question slipped out.

“You never talk about your family,” I said softly, tracing a line along

KIMANI Alaric returned from his call with a breakfast tray. "Finally, I was starving." I said, sitting up. He just smiled and gently placed the tray on the bed beside me. After making sure that it was balanced, he took off his slippers and got in bed with me. The tray was very wide and filled with different plates of breakfast choices. "Are you trying to fatten me up?" I gave him a side eye. Alaric looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "You just said you were starving. I brought enough so you will have enough to eat but now you are accusing me of trying to fatten you up." "One can never tell." I replied, cutting into the pancakes. "If you are scared of getting fattened up, you can join me to workout, everything will balance up." he said. I shook my head. "Nah, intense activity is not for me." "All the more reason why you should join me." he sipped from his cup of coffee. "Are you calling me lazy?" I asked, looking at him. "No, not at all. Think of it as us spending time

KIMANI When I woke up that morning, I felt so tired. I glared at the culprit and the person that caused that predicament. And he had the audacity to try and smile at me. "I'm not allowing you near me for the next one month." I told him. He looked at me with hooded eyes. "You and I know that would not be possible." he said. "I might actually try it." I replied, sitting up. Alaric stared at me, his eyes darkened. I looked down to see that the shirt I was wearing was exposing my chest and the hickeys he had scattered around them. "Look away, perv." I said adjusting the shirt. "Perv? I'm not a perv, I'm just staring at my beautiful wife and her amazing body that has some equally beautiful art. Courtesy of me." he replied. I rolled my eyes and stood up from the bed, legs staggering like a new born fawn. Alaric looked at me with a smug look on his face. "Wipe that off." I scowled. He came closer and carried me. "Come on. A hot saltwater filled bathtub is waiting for you to com

KIMANI Alaric and I returned to the bedroom after a hearty dinner. "I'm going to shower, I smell like chicken and herbs." I told him. He just nodded and watched me go into the bathroom. Inside, I took off my clothes and got into the shower. I was halfway through when I felt arms wrap around my waist. "Alaric, what are you up to?" I asked him. He spun me around and kissed me, the shower raining down on us. I noticed that he has taken off his clothes too. Water streamed down his shoulders, darkening his hair, tracing lines over skin I knew by heart now. The bathroom filled with steam, the air thick and warm, the world reduced to tiled walls, rushing water, and the way his hands fit around me like they always had. “Alaric,” I said again, breathless this time, half-warning, half-curiosity. He leaned down, resting his forehead against mine. “You walked away smelling like chicken and herbs,” he murmured. “I couldn’t let that stand.” I laughed softly, the sound dissolving into th

KIMANI When we got home, everything felt… normal. The staff moved around quietly, some arranging flowers in the hallway, others passing through with laundry baskets and trays. The soft hum of a house that never really slept. The guards by the door greeted us as usual, respectful nods, warm smiles. Nothing about the atmosphere suggested that my day had been shaken by anonymous notes and quiet threats. And maybe that was exactly what I needed. I went straight upstairs, shedding my shoes along the way. The room welcomed me with its familiar calm—the muted colors, the faint scent of my body wash and Alaric’s cologne lingering in the air. I grabbed comfortable clothes from the closet and headed into the bathroom to freshen up. When I stepped back out, Alaric was sitting on the edge of the bed. His jacket and tie were gone, sleeves of his shirt rolled up, top buttons undone. He looked like he was halfway between CEO and husband, the version of him that existed only at home. Rela

Chapter 74 KIMANI The office buzzed with a different kind of energy that morning. It wasn’t the usual quiet hum of keyboards and muted phone calls. It was louder. Brighter. People lingered in clusters longer than necessary, voices dropping and rising with excitement. Decorations had already started creeping in—silver streamers near the elevators, a half-inflated balloon tied to someone’s chair, fairy lights waiting to be strung properly. End-of-the-year party season had officially begun. I smiled as I settled into my chair, logging into my system. Even with everything that had happened recently—the article, the whispers, the strange notes—I couldn’t deny the shift in atmosphere. It felt lighter. Anticipatory. Like everyone was collectively counting down. “Can you believe it’s already happening next week?” Rachel said, sliding into the chair beside my desk. “Time moves differently in this building,” I replied, amused. “I still feel like I just started.” She snorted. “Th

KIMANI I woke up slowly, the kind of slow where your body registers sensation before your mind catches up. Warmth. Soft sheets. The steady, familiar weight of an arm around my waist. And then—soreness. Not pain. Just that deep, lingering ache that made me very aware of every place I’d been held a little longer, kissed a little deeper, loved a little more thoroughly than usual. I shifted slightly and hissed under my breath. Immediately, the arm around me tightened. “You’re awake,” Alaric murmured, voice still rough with sleep. “Mm,” I replied, eyes still closed. “I think my body is filing a formal complaint.” He chuckled quietly behind me, the sound vibrating against my back. “That bad?” “I feel like I fought a war,” I said dryly. “And lost.” He moved carefully then, like every motion was calculated not to jostle me. “Stay still.” I felt him slide out of bed, the loss of his warmth making me frown despite myself. A moment later, the mattress dipped again as he leaned over
