ASTRID’S POV
A low growl echoed behind me, and the sound of twigs snapping made my heart jump into my throat. They were here and they were closer than ever. Judging by the amount of steps, it wasn't just one… I paused… those were human steps… not a werewolfs’. I squeezed my eyes shut, whispering, “Please, please…” over and over, my hand clutched around my locket like it could protect me. Then a strong hand yanked me up and I screamed at the force at which I was pulled to my feet. A large palm immediately clamped over my mouth. “Damn it! shut up!” a low, gravelly voice hissed near my ear. I froze, my eyes flying open, and I found myself staring into the bluest pair of eyes I’d ever seen. They were sharp. Cold. Watching me like I was a prey and he was the predator while his calloused hands easily shut me up. Who was this? Whoever he was, he had a dangerous air around him and I needed to get the hell away from him. He towered over me, his face only inches from mine. His jaw was sharp, his expression unreadable but stoic. My breath caught in my throat. He didn’t look like a rogue. No, he looked... dangerous. Controlled. Like someone who could kill without blinking. “Don’t say a word,” he murmured. His voice. Gods. It was so deep, it vibrated in my chest. He let go of me slowly, but his eyes didn’t move from my face. Then, I noticed itㅡTwo others stood behind him, scanning the trees. Identical faces. Identical builds. All three of them… related? My mind spun as I backed up slowly, limbs trembling, ready to run. There was an unfamiliar growl all of a sudden and It came from the side. Before I could scream again, something lunged out of the darkness. “LOOK OUT!” I shrieked. The man with the blue eyes didn’t hesitate. In one swift motion, he shifted, fur erupting, bones cracking, form expanding. A massive black wolf slammed into the rogue mid-air, knocking it away from me before it could tear me to bits. One of the others shifted too, a lighter grey wolf barreling into the fight and I stumbled back, jaw dropping as I watched them. That speed. That power. That unfamiliar scent. Lycans. They were Lycans. Holy hell. I didn’t wait. I turned and ran again. My feet pounded against the ground even as pain screamed through my legs. My side ached, my breathing came out in ragged gasps. I didn’t care. I just needed to get away. But my body… it had limits and clearly, It chose now of all times. Suddenly, I collapsed again, knees slamming into the dirt and scraping against the floor. My hands dug into the cold earth as sobs tore out of me. “I can’t… I can’t do this…” Tears streaked down my face, hot and helpless. “I don’t want to die…” Then suddenly, I heard a whistle and I jerked my head up. Out of the shadows, one of them emerged, a smirk tugging at his lips as he walked toward me like he had all the time in the world. “Well, that was a waste of energy,” he said, cocking his head. “You thought you could outrun us?” “Please…” I whispered as I scrambled back on my butt. “Don’t kill me. Please.” He didn’t say anything at first. Just looked down at me. His eyes dragged across my torn dress, my bloodied knees, the fear on my face with a slow scrutinizing look that made me cringeㅡfold. “I’m not gonna kill you,” he said at last, his tone unreadable. “Not unless you try to run again.” The other two appeared behind him. They were identical. I couldn’t look any of them in the eye. “Name,” the first one who had grabbed me earlier demanded. Nope, that was risky, I wasn't about to divulge anything so I stayed silent. His gaze sharpened. “I said…name.” “I… I can’t—” I stuttered. “If I ask again, it won’t be pretty,” he warned. “A-Astrid,” I whispered. “Astrid Miller.” “Pack?” I swallowed. “Silver Hollow… I mean—” My voice cracked. “It used to be my pack.” They all exchanged glances. “I knew it,” said the second one. “That pack is messed up and father was wrong. Tossed out by her own Alpha.” “Typical Silver Hollow,” the third muttered. What? I frowned, heart pounding. “Who are you?” They all looked at me. Then the one with the coldest stare stepped forward. “Lucas Marlowe. That’s Logan.” He jerked his chin at the smirking one. “And that’s Landon.” My breath hitched. The Marlowe triplets. The royal Lycans. The ones Silver Hollow had been preparing to receive. “Oh my god…” I whispered. Landon crouched down in front of me, eyes scanning me from head to toe. “Looks like you got thrown out right before we arrived, huh?” he said. “Interesting timing.” “I don’t know what I did,” I mumbled, trembling. “I swear…” “You owe us,” he said flatly, cutting me off instantly. Confusion filled me and I blinked. “W-What?” “You’d be dead meat by now if we hadn’t shown up,” Lucas cut in. “You owe us your life.” Suddenly, I could barely breathe. “What do you want from me?” He stood to his full height and looked down at me. “We don’t trust Silver Hollow,” Lucas said. “They’ve been acting shady, and we don’t like being lied to.” “What better way to get to the truth,” Logan added with a shrug, “than with someone who knows their dirty little secrets and won't mind spilling it?” I stared up at them. “You… want me to help you spy on the pack?” “Not spy,” Landon said with a smirk. “Just be our eyes and ears. Think of it as a guide… you don't owe them anything” “Absolutely not!” I said quickly. “I’m not going back there! They hated me, kicked me out like I was nothing!” “Do you have anywhere else to go?” Lucas asked coldly, his tone sounding bored. My mouth opened, then closed. My heart sank as realization hit me. “No…” I whispered. “Exactly,” he said. “Here’s the deal. You help us for the duration of our stay, and we’ll either take you back to the Lycan Kingdom or help you reclaim your position in Silver Hollow. Whatever you want” “And if I don’t?” I asked, voice small. “Then we leave you right here,” Logan said, eyes sharp. “In the dark. With the rogues.” Tears stung my eyes because they were right. “Deal?” Lucas asked, his voice hard as stone. Looking up at him with tired eyes , I held his gaze. “Deal”LUCAS'S POVI took one last look at the girl crouched down on the floor and I sighed. She looked a mess.We had been walking through the forest when Landon had caught the scent of blood and naturally we thought someone was being attacked by a rogue so we had rushed to track the person down but we had clearly not expected to see ….her.Her face was matted with blood and mud, obscuring her features but I could tell she was actually quite pretty and judging from the looks that my brothers gave her, I knew they were thinking the same.“Think we can stop somewhere and get her new clothes and all?” Landon asked, tilting his chin up at me.As the oldest of the triplets and the heir to the throne, I was laden with a lot of responsibilities and sometimes, I wondered how it would be like if I wasn't.I looked up at the sky already beginning to show signs of the sunrise. “Let's camp here. Matthew and the others will catch up with us soon. For now…” I looked down at her.She was hugging her knees
ASTRID'S POVThe encounter was frightening enough and my legs were wobbling by the time I made it back into the room that was assigned to me in their quarters. The Lycan brothers room was just a few hallways away from mine and I was given a room of my own. There was a sudden knock on the door and I jerked slightly, my palms sweaty as I opened the door to see a maid standing there with a bunch of clothes in her hands as well as a scowl on her face. She clearly didn't appreciate waiting on me but there was a small sense of triumph in me at the way the tables had been flipped.“Here's your clothes” She forced a smile at me, handing the clothes to me.“Thanks” i muttered, collecting them from her.She didn't leave immediately, she looked me over with a disgusted look on her face. “You don't belong here” She spat.My heart deflated at her words but before I could open my mouth to speak, I heard a voice from outside. “I don't think that's your place to note”The maid paled, bowed and scurri
ASTRID'S POVI didn't look back, I didn't want to. My feet pounded against the stone floor, my boots scraping against it when I suddenly halted at the door to my room.My fingers trembled as I pulled out the key to my room while I tried to fix it in but I felt fumbling it and tears stung my eyes at the realization that I couldn't even do this.I heard it before I turned aroundㅡ the sound of someone walking to me briskly and the scent of musk reached me before I heard his voice.“You okay, Princess?” A husky voice asked, his presence weighing heavily on me.With a defiant look, I turned around to see Lucas standing there, the sight of those unblinking eyes making my stomach coil in… what was it?“I'm fine” I brushed his concern aside. “I just decided to come back to my room and get some rest” I muttered, turning back around to try to open my door with slightly trembling fingers. He was silent for a moment but I could feel him thereㅡ a solid rock behind me, unmoving, silent but there.“
LUCAS'S POVTurns out she wasn't good at fighting evidently judging from the hurried panting as she wheezed, the sword I had given her clutched tightly in one hand while she held her chest.“Stop” She panted, doubling over on the sparring ground.I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Why did I have to end up with someone who had no clue about anything.“Astrid” I called out and she raised her head up slightly to stare at me.“Seriously?” I raised a brow. “We've been at it for just 20 minutes. I have a meeting in an hour and you're supposed to be there, you know?” I reminded her.Silence followed and she struggled to straighten up, her hair messy in a messy bun with strands sticking to her sweaty face. “Absolutely not. I prefer it here”Gosh, she was stubborn and I didn't know if I should be impressed or annoyed but I was betting on the latter. “You suck at both” I didn't sugarcoat it for her.Her bottom lip wobbled and I could tell my words were harsh but I was never the type to sugar
ASTRID'S POV“How much longer?” I asked, feeling my breath shorten with each step into the woods. We'd been walking for two hours straight and he had shown no signs of stopping. Oh, did I mention that I had asked him questions severally but all I got were grunts in response. He seemed to be more intent on speaking with the guards that followed us. Three guards from silver hollow and four from his.“Landon!” I couldn't take it any more, willing myself to move closer to where he stood, his hand on the sheath of his sword. He didn't seem to be fazed when I almost crashed into him, leaves crunching under my both as I slid to a stop from the high ground I was.“What?” He asked, looking around. The guards were scouting around, their swords at the ready as they spread in different directions.I had no weapon with me except for a small dagger because the weight of a sword would probably slow me down. “How far along are we to the destination?” I asked impatiently. He turned to look at me slowl
ASTRID'S POV The group was silent, a brooding tense atmosphere settling over us and Landon turned around to look at me again, his brows furrowing when he noticed the look on my face.“Whoa… are you okay?” He didn't seem fazed by the death of the guard from silver hollow, he took a step towards me instead.“I… we have to go” I announced, my voice desperate but he held my shoulder, his grip tight and preventing me from moving further away.“What's wrong?” He demanded.I noticed how the others placed their hands over their chest, their fingers grazing the crest over their armour as they gave their fallen comrade a proper send-off.Turning back to Landon who was staring at me, his eyes flickering over me to make sure I was fine and for a moment, I felt overwhelmed by the grey and hazel eyes orbs looking me over. “Astrid!” The sound of his voice calling my name snapped me back to reality and I jerked slightly in his hold.“We have to go. We've seen enough” I broke free from his hold effor
ASTRID'S POV“Absolutely not” Ren sounded almost angry when I brought it up at the next meeting, leaving out the details of the fact that humans were suspected on the outskirts of the packㅡ that was for me and the triplets to figure out.I didn't know what I was expecting. Was i really expecting him to just agree to it?Ren gripped the large table that stood between everyone present at the meeting. “We can't afford to go about in the woods for something as stupid as that”“What if we find something?” I mustered the courage to speak up finally and I was rewarded with a glare from Ren.“What if?” He asked, his voice a mask of fury. “If?! There is no place for probabilities, Astrid Miller” Something about the way he said my full name sent goosebumps through me.Instead of cowering like I would have done a few weeks ago if I had seen him in this mood, I raised my chin, matching his gaze. “Staying behind this sheltered walls won't lead us to anything” I pointed out, earning a chuckle from
ASTRID'S POVI tossed and turned in bed, unable to get some rest.My chest tightened with fear even in sleep. I was running. Fast. With purpose. The forest was dark, shadows flickering around me like claws reaching out to grab me. My feet stumbled over roots and uneven ground that seemed to tear at the soles of my feet, my breath ragged. Something was chasing me. No matter how fast I ran, I could feel it behind me— so close, reaching out to grab me.Leaves whipped across my face as I tried to run through closely packed trees. Branches tore at my clothes. I couldn’t stop. I didn’t dare stop.A voice echoed faintly behind me, but I couldn't make out the words. It didn’t sound threatening… it sounded familiar. I turned my head to look, just for a second and that was all it took.My foot caught on something and I fell.Hard.The world spun as I rolled down a slope, dirt filling my mouth, leaves stuck in my hair. I tried to scream, but no sound came out. My body hit the bottom of the slope
ASTRID'S POVIt suddenly became hard to breathe and my legs had begun to wobble. I hadn't seen her for years. Ever since I was just a little kid, she had made it her job to bully me due to the fact that I was the weakest member of the pack. Soon after my mum died, Sabrina was picked by the Luna of the pack who was still alive at that time to become her personal maidㅡ I felt happy that I didn't have to see her face again, I was a bit sad that this meant that she would have a better life but at least she wouldn't have to torture me again. When the Luna died and Alpha Williams stepped down for Ren to take over, I didn't hear from her again but I knew that she was still in the palace but now as a higher maid. Ren used to give me information about her but I never wanted to see her again.Until now.“What do you want?” I croaked. She placed her hands on her hips and I used the opportunity to look at herㅡ really look at her.She was almost the same. Full black silky hair, blue eyes just like
ASTRID'S POVI stumbled back at the sudden crash of his lips against mine. It was everything like I knewㅡ everything felt familiarㅡ the sudden way my heart started to race. The way his hands reached up into my hair, gripping it lightly but not enough to hurt me. The way his lips seemed to mould perfectly against mine, his tongue slightly tracing my lips and his hot breath fanning across my skin.It all felt familiar. All except oneㅡ I didn't feel anything. The slight spark or the violent lurching of my stomach whenever we kissed. It felt…empty but I couldn't push him away, my hands fell slack by my sides. He didn't seem to notice my hesitation as he backed me against the wall, his hands reaching for the hem of my shirt and in that moment, it felt like I had come to my senses by how suddenly I gripped his hand, lightly pushing him away with my other hand.“Ren..” My voice was a tentative whisper as I tried to catch my breath, my heart pounding violently in my ribcage. He seemed confuse
ASTRID'S POVAbout 30 minutes later of pacing about Lucas's study, he and Landon walked into the room, now wearing clean clothes with their hair still slightly damp from the shower.Landon crossed the room in a few steps and collapsed on the couch beside Logan who had been silent despite being in here with me for the last 30 minutes.“Okay…” Lucas clapped his hand, a small smile on his face.I stopped pacing about and crossed my arms. “Now, where were we? Oh right, the part where I said no”Landon raised a hand almost immediately and Lucas turned to him. “Yes, Landon?”“I say we give her a little shaking” He grinned slightly, his gaze fixed on me.My lips parted slightly in shock and I pointed a finger at him. “Did you just suggest threatening me?” My eyes were wide.He shrugged and looked at Lucas. “C'mon…”Lucas palmed himself across the face and shook his head. “Stop scaring her.” He chided then turned to me. “Look, Astrid. We can get what you want but you'll have to get us what we
LANDON'S POV“We're done looking, Lucas” I groaned, firmly sticking the tip of my sword into the soft earth.Lucas had his bow in his hand, an arrow nocked in case of any emergencies. We had been scouring around for a few hours and I was already getting bored. The forest was the last place I wanted to be wandering about aimlessly. I wanted some action and I had already scouted around for a full hour but it seemed the unrest that had happened had already scared all the good animals awayㅡ which meant no game.“Let's just…wait..” Lucas looked stressed, his hair matted to his face due to sweat and grime.Yeah, we'd been waiting for about 6 hours. “Look, I'm bored. There is simply no trace, okay? We've looked, can we go?... Before I start getting funny ideas” My gaze darted to the silver hollow guards who were standing a few feet away from us and Lucas traced my gaze. His expression immediately morphed into one of annoyance. “Perish that thought, Landon. They're innocent”I shrugged. “Well
ASTRID'S POVThis was a terrible idea.I knew that much as I tugged at the reins to the Chestnut brown horse that I had rode.“Haymitch,James… Take the southern border and report here in an hour” Ren ordered the two guards who had accompanied us.They nodded, hit the flank of their horse lightly before riding off to the opposite directionㅡ which meant we were alone.“You're silent” Ren climbed down from his horse in one swift swing of his legs, his hand going out to pat the horse.I did the same, ignoring his heated look to see if I could handle myself. “You haven't given me much material”I gave a quick sweep of the environment, my gaze fixed on the distance. “Doesn't seem like anyone has been around the borders yet” I pointed out.He didn't answer me but I heard dry leaves crunching under his boot as he approached me from behind and almost immediately, my heart rate spiked up.“I think we're…safe then” He mumbled. “So… the triplets, huh? Lucas perhaps?” There was an undertone of sli
ASTRID'S POV “No” I muttered, rolling over in my sleep, the sheets around my body clinging to me like a vice.I was running againㅡ away from silver hollow. The moon shone like a beacon from high up but barely illuminated the path to wherever I was going to.Where was I going to? One thing was clearㅡ I was running for my life. Each step rhythmic. Filled with fear. A desperate surge for survival.Regardless, it neared. Something loomed behind me, quiet but there, seeming to mock my efforts to get away by how it was always behind me despite my speed. My wolf seemed to desert me and I couldn't amplify my speed anymore, exhaustion began to set in and I tripped over a branch, a whimper escaping my lips as I felt my knee graze against sharp stones.I wasted no time as I scrambled back on my butt, my breathing laboured as I heard footsteps approach from the pitch black forest. It found me.A scream tore from my throat as red eyes came into view but almost immediatelyㅡ“Astrid!” The voice was
ASTRID'S POVThe silence that followed was defeaning and I opened my mouth to say something but he beat me to it.“You came back with the triplets and suddenly, a foreign thing enters the forest?”I crossed my arms and straightened up. “Yeah, so? You do realize that the triplets live in this same forest, they are not responsible for whatever is in it”Michael looked almost annoyed at my words but he tampered it down with a deep sigh. “Not my point, Miss Miller. Look, all that matters is that something is in this forest and it's not supposed to be there, it's threatening the security that was given to us by the High Lords and goddess. The attack is one thing but with the magical barrier being tampered with? We're going to be fighting a losing battle”There was something about the way he said it that made me instantly start thinking. “Did you tell the Alpha yet?” My mind wandered back to Ren.“Not yet. I want to be sure of this first. Think you could get information on this?” He tapped
ASTRID'S POV I don't know what I was doing out in the village but I couldn't sit in the quarters and hope to get close to the villagers. Which is why I found myself walking down the road just as the sun had begun to set, casting long shadows across the path. The people cast me glances ㅡ fleeting and discreetㅡ but they quickly went back to packing in their animals and everything for the night before I could lock gazes with them and tell them anything. Oh, still in the game of ignoring people, cool. I should go back but I kept walking until I saw her—an old woman with a hunched back, struggling with a sack nearly her size. She dropped it for the third time, grumbling under her breath. “Here, let me help you,” I rushed over. “No,” she snapped. Her voice was rough. “I don’t need help from you.” Ouch. “I’m not the cursed omega who was banished or whatever you all call me,” I said calmly, reaching down for the sack again. “And even if I was, that thing looks like it’s about t
LOGAN'S POV“What do you mean the Alpha almost killed her?” Lucas sounded furious as I leaned against the wall in his study.Landon was reclining on the chair, admiring the blade in his hands as he watched the blade catch the sun while he marvelled at it.“I mean… the goblet was with poisoned wine. I just had a flash that she was about to drink it and that was all” I shrugged, pushing myself off the wall.Landon looked up at that, pointing the dagger's tip at me as though it were his finger. “Didn't you say you couldn't use your powers anymore?” He asked skeptically.I couldn't. He was right. What happened today was a glitch…it had to be.“Yeah” I admitted. “I don't know how it happened”Lucas looked at Landon in shock but Landon seemed to be thinking of something else also. My lips parted as I realized the reason behind his hesitance. “No way…” I muttered.A grin spread his lips instantly. “Yeahhh”I scoffed in amazement and strided over to him, my mouth agape as I clapped his should
