LUCAS'S POV

I took one last look at the girl crouched down on the floor and I sighed. She looked a mess.

We had been walking through the forest when Landon had caught the scent of blood and naturally we thought someone was being attacked by a rogue so we had rushed to track the person down but we had clearly not expected to see ….her.

Her face was matted with blood and mud, obscuring her features but I could tell she was actually quite pretty and judging from the looks that my brothers gave her, I knew they were thinking the same.

“Think we can stop somewhere and get her new clothes and all?” Landon asked, tilting his chin up at me.

As the oldest of the triplets and the heir to the throne, I was laden with a lot of responsibilities and sometimes, I wondered how it would be like if I wasn't.

I looked up at the sky already beginning to show signs of the sunrise. “Let's camp here. Matthew and the others will catch up with us soon. For now…” I looked down at her.

She was hugging her knees to herself and I felt bad for her. “Astrid?” My voice was cold but my gaze sharp.

She looked up at me, her eyes wide with fear. “Yeah?”

Logan kicked dust up with his boot, muttering something incomprehensible under his breath.

“Are you hungry?” I asked, my hands on my waist.

Her lips parted but no words came out, it was almost like she was hesitating.

“Logan, attend to her. Landon, with me. Let's scout out this place and hope to be back in a few hours so we can continue our journey” I nodded to Landon who looked at Logan with an expression that clearly stated that this was a bad idea.

I knew Logan didn't like werewolves… not after the attacks that had been happening recently but I needed Landon with me and I wasn't going to let her be alone. “Stay here” I ordered before leaving with Landon.

A few hours had passed and Landon and I were standing at the edge of the forest , our sights already on the fortified wall of the packㅡBingo.

“Alright. This route is safe. Let's go grab the others” I took a step back, retreating into the dense foliage but Landon just smirked.

“They're here already” He rested his weight on one leg as he looked behind me and I did too, in time to hear the sound of footsteps.

So they had followedㅡthat solved the problem of walking back.

A few minutes later, they emerged with Logan leading, clearly not wanting to stay close to the girl while our guards which were supposed to catch up with us were flanking her.

“Ready to gㅡ” Landon paused and so did I as we caught sight of Astrid. She was clean already, clearly they had stopped at the river or something and she was now wearing one of Logan's shirt and trousers even though they looked too big on her small frame.

I blinked awayㅡfocus, Lucas.

“Let's go”, I muttered.

We stepped out of the forest and I waited for Astrid to catch up with me, sneaking glances at her and noting that she looked scared and nervous. I could read memories… that was my power … I could read her and I wanted to.

“Astrid… you don't have to be nervous” I placed a hand suddenly on her shoulder, making her jerk in surprise. As soon as I touched her, flashes of events and a mirage of emotions coursed through me before I quickly pulled away.

Oh.

She didn't know what I had done, she simply looked up at me as we neared the gates and shook her head, a pitiful look on her face. “Just let me go” She pleaded.

Logan who was beside her, scoffed. “Shut up, Astrid. Just walk”

She shut up immediately, a distraught look on her face as the door to the pack opened and I looked up at the walls to see the sentinels looking at us already.

They knew we were here.

As we walked in, Astrid moved closer to me and I stole a look down at her trembling figure, her eyes wide as she took in our surroundings. Could she stop trembling? It was beginning grate on my already frayed nerves.

A group of people were approaching us and from the look of them, it was the Alpha. That was confirmed when they came into clear sight.

“Alpha Lucas” The man smiled and I did a quick sweep of him. He was youngㅡNot what I was expecting definitelyㅡ he looked almost… naive.

Something felt off if he was the one who had ordered for Astrid to be kicked out of the pack but by the way she tensed behind me, I knew he was.

“Alpha Ren?” I guessed as he extended his hand out for a shake.

He nodded and looked around my company. “I didn't realize we were expecting the entire Lycan royalty” He looked surprised.

There was no trace of a smile on my face. He didn't deserve itㅡ A man who threw out a helpless woman to die after cruelly breaking the mate bond and leaving her weak?ㅡ he deserved death at best.

“Well, we like to bring surprises” Logan muttered, his hand resting on his sword when he noticed Ren's eyes fall on Astrid who stepped out from behind my broad back.

The speed at which his face paled and shock and confusion warred in his eyes was comical and suddenly a part of me wanted to know more about their past. “Aㅡastrid?” He stuttered and I could hear his people behind him gasp also.

She didn't say a word, she was nervously fiddling with her shirt and suddenly, Ren exploded with anger. “You are no longer allowed in the pack! Guards!”

“Whoa whoa” Logan stepped forward but Landon already drew out his sword and pointed it at Ren who stilled at the sharp blade, his guards yelling and drawing out their swords at us also.

I stood there calmly, my gaze narrowing on Ren who was breathing heavily. “I don't think we need to get into a bloodbath during our first meeting… I assure you that you will not win” I paused and took Astrid's smaller hand in mine to pull her forward. “Astrid Miller is under the protection of the Lycan society and will be treated as a member of such. She is no longer a member of this pack but is now an advisor in our ranks… anyone who speaks ill or does bad to her will answer to my sword” I announced loudly for the growing onlookers to hear.

The crowd was silent, shock written on their faces and was that…contempt?

“Good. Now… lead us to our quarters”

ASTRID'S POVThe encounter was frightening enough and my legs were wobbling by the time I made it back into the room that was assigned to me in their quarters. The Lycan brothers room was just a few hallways away from mine and I was given a room of my own. There was a sudden knock on the door and I jerked slightly, my palms sweaty as I opened the door to see a maid standing there with a bunch of clothes in her hands as well as a scowl on her face. She clearly didn't appreciate waiting on me but there was a small sense of triumph in me at the way the tables had been flipped.“Here's your clothes” She forced a smile at me, handing the clothes to me.“Thanks” i muttered, collecting them from her.She didn't leave immediately, she looked me over with a disgusted look on her face. “You don't belong here” She spat.My heart deflated at her words but before I could open my mouth to speak, I heard a voice from outside. “I don't think that's your place to note”The maid paled, bowed and scurri

ASTRID'S POVI didn't look back, I didn't want to. My feet pounded against the stone floor, my boots scraping against it when I suddenly halted at the door to my room.My fingers trembled as I pulled out the key to my room while I tried to fix it in but I felt fumbling it and tears stung my eyes at the realization that I couldn't even do this.I heard it before I turned aroundㅡ the sound of someone walking to me briskly and the scent of musk reached me before I heard his voice.“You okay, Princess?” A husky voice asked, his presence weighing heavily on me.With a defiant look, I turned around to see Lucas standing there, the sight of those unblinking eyes making my stomach coil in… what was it?“I'm fine” I brushed his concern aside. “I just decided to come back to my room and get some rest” I muttered, turning back around to try to open my door with slightly trembling fingers. He was silent for a moment but I could feel him thereㅡ a solid rock behind me, unmoving, silent but there.“

LUCAS'S POVTurns out she wasn't good at fighting evidently judging from the hurried panting as she wheezed, the sword I had given her clutched tightly in one hand while she held her chest.“Stop” She panted, doubling over on the sparring ground.I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Why did I have to end up with someone who had no clue about anything.“Astrid” I called out and she raised her head up slightly to stare at me.“Seriously?” I raised a brow. “We've been at it for just 20 minutes. I have a meeting in an hour and you're supposed to be there, you know?” I reminded her.Silence followed and she struggled to straighten up, her hair messy in a messy bun with strands sticking to her sweaty face. “Absolutely not. I prefer it here”Gosh, she was stubborn and I didn't know if I should be impressed or annoyed but I was betting on the latter. “You suck at both” I didn't sugarcoat it for her.Her bottom lip wobbled and I could tell my words were harsh but I was never the type to sugar

ASTRID'S POV“How much longer?” I asked, feeling my breath shorten with each step into the woods. We'd been walking for two hours straight and he had shown no signs of stopping. ASTRID'S POV“Absolutely not” Ren sounded almost angry when I brought it up at the next meeting, leaving out the details of the fact that humans were suspected on the outskirts of the packㅡ that was for me and the triplets to figure out.I didn't know what I was expecting. Was i really expecting him to just agree to it?Ren gripped the large table that stood between everyone present at the meeting. “We can't afford to go about in the woods for something as stupid as that”“What if we find something?” I mustered the courage to speak up finally and I was rewarded with a glare from Ren.“What if?” He asked, his voice a mask of fury. “If?! There is no place for probabilities, Astrid Miller” Something about the way he said my full name sent goosebumps through me.Instead of cowering like I would have done a few weeks ago if I had seen him in this mood, I raised my chin, matching his gaze. “Staying behind this sheltered walls won't lead us to anything” I pointed out, earning a chuckle from

ASTRID'S POVI tossed and turned in bed, unable to get some rest.My chest tightened with fear even in sleep. I was running. Fast. With purpose. The forest was dark, shadows flickering around me like claws reaching out to grab me. My feet stumbled over roots and uneven ground that seemed to tear at the soles of my feet, my breath ragged. Something was chasing me. No matter how fast I ran, I could feel it behind me— so close, reaching out to grab me.Leaves whipped across my face as I tried to run through closely packed trees. Branches tore at my clothes. I couldn’t stop. I didn’t dare stop.A voice echoed faintly behind me, but I couldn't make out the words. It didn’t sound threatening… it sounded familiar. Surely, you all must think I'm that stupid to not know that someone in my ranks died and not from an attack as you all came back unscathed…” He paused and raised a hand nonchalantly.“... LANDON’S POVI was tense. My leg bounced against the hardwood floor in a restless rhythm as I stared at the far wall of Lucas’ study, my expression blank but my emotions were a jumbled mess. Logan sat across from me, arms folded, eyes trained on the ceiling like he was trying to make sense of something that disturbed him. For the first time in a while, he looked... worried. Not the usual calculated, cold worry Logan was known for. This was real type of worry and I found myself glancing at him sometimes. My own mind wasn’t exactly peaceful either.“You going to tell them or not?” my wolf growled inside me. His voice was low and gruff. “They deserve to know.”I ignored him, clenching my fists and leaning forward. My hand brushed against the hilt of my sword resting beside me. Polished steel. Familiar weight. Sharp edge that inflicted pain and brought death to many. It always brought me some semblance of calm. I unsheathed it slightly, letting the faint glint of the blade catch the dim

ASTRID'S POVOnce more, it felt like the air had been knocked out of my windpipes and my vision began to swim.I clutched my head suddenly, feeling very faint but he reached out and quickly steadied meㅡ his touch felt hot, scalding and I instantly felt at ease.“Are you okay?” He asked me, his tone calm but worried. He was never worried about me but right now, he seemed worried. That made my heart skip a beat.Damn this stupid mate bond. This had to be a mistake. Lucas and now Logan? Who next? Landon? That'd be laughable. It wasn't going to happen.Turns out i was wrong for as just immediately, Landon appeared with a scowl on his face as he tucked his knife back into it's scabbard, the atmosphere shifting at his arrival.“Lucas has business with the Alpha, it seems. What are you both talking about?” Landon said, looking between the both of us.My lips parted but no words came out because Maria whispered the same word that has been plaguing me for an hour now.Mate.This had to be some

ASTRID’S POVHe was still rambling on about something but my mind was far, far away from his words.Oh no.No. No. No.That couldn’t be what I heard. That couldn’t be what Maria whispered. Not now. Not with him.Lucas's lips were moving, his voice calm and steady, but all I could hear was Maria repeating that one word in my head, like a mantra and I could stop playing it over in my head like a broken record.Mate.That word changed everything. It felt like things between us had changed. It made the space around him feel different—warmer, yet I couldn't stop the shock that coursed through me. My palms began to sweat. I couldn’t look away from him, and yet I desperately wanted to.“…Astrid?” he asked softly, interrupting my spiraling thoughts.I blinked, trying to ground myself, and met his gaze.“You okay? ASTRID'S POVIt suddenly became hard to breathe and my legs had begun to wobble. I hadn't seen her for years. Ever since I was just a little kid, she had made it her job to bully me due to the fact that I was the weakest member of the pack. Soon after my mum died, Sabrina was picked by the Luna of the pack who was still alive at that time to become her personal maidㅡ I felt happy that I didn't have to see her face again, I was a bit sad that this meant that she would have a better life but at least she wouldn't have to torture me again. When the Luna died and Alpha Williams stepped down for Ren to take over, I didn't hear from her again but I knew that she was still in the palace but now as a higher maid. Ren used to give me information about her but I never wanted to see her again.Until now.“What do you want?” I croaked. She placed her hands on her hips and I used the opportunity to look at herㅡ really look at her.She was almost the same. ASTRID'S POVI stumbled back at the sudden crash of his lips against mine. It was everything like I knewㅡ everything felt familiarㅡ the sudden way my heart started to race. The way his hands reached up into my hair, gripping it lightly but not enough to hurt me. The way his lips seemed to mould perfectly against mine, his tongue slightly tracing my lips and his hot breath fanning across my skin.It all felt familiar. All except oneㅡ I didn't feel anything. The slight spark or the violent lurching of my stomach whenever we kissed. It felt…empty but I couldn't push him away, my hands fell slack by my sides. He didn't seem to notice my hesitation as he backed me against the wall, his hands reaching for the hem of my shirt and in that moment, it felt like I had come to my senses by how suddenly I gripped his hand, lightly pushing him away with my other hand.“Ren..” My voice was a tentative whisper as I tried to catch my breath, my heart pounding violently in my ribcage. He seemed confuse

LANDON'S POV“We're done looking, Lucas” I groaned, firmly sticking the tip of my sword into the soft earth.Lucas had his bow in his hand, an arrow nocked in case of any emergencies. We had been scouring around for a few hours and I was already getting bored. The forest was the last place I wanted to be wandering about aimlessly. I wanted some action and I had already scouted around for a full hour but it seemed the unrest that had happened had already scared all the good animals awayㅡ which meant no game.“Let's just…wait..” Lucas looked stressed, his hair matted to his face due to sweat and grime.Yeah, we'd been waiting for about 6 hours. “Look, I'm bored. There is simply no trace, okay? We've looked, can we go?... Before I start getting funny ideas” My gaze darted to the silver hollow guards who were standing a few feet away from us and Lucas traced my gaze. His expression immediately morphed into one of annoyance. “Perish that thought, Landon. ASTRID'S POVThis was a terrible idea.I knew that much as I tugged at the reins to the Chestnut brown horse that I had rode.“Haymitch,James… Take the southern border and report here in an hour” Ren ordered the two guards who had accompanied us.They nodded, hit the flank of their horse lightly before riding off to the opposite directionㅡ which meant we were alone.“You're silent” Ren climbed down from his horse in one swift swing of his legs, his hand going out to pat the horse.I did the same, ignoring his heated look to see if I could handle myself. “You haven't given me much material”I gave a quick sweep of the environment, my gaze fixed on the distance. “Doesn't seem like anyone has been around the borders yet” I pointed out.He didn't answer me but I heard dry leaves crunching under his boot as he approached me from behind and almost immediately, my heart rate spiked up.“I think we're…safe then” He mumbled. “So… the triplets, huh?
