With irregular, shaky breaths, Rose shielded the man carrying her as much as she could from Richard’s attack, but nothing happened after many seconds passed. Not a single grunt or screech filled the air.
Confused, Rose opened her eyes and met the man’s gaze.
“Uh…” Just looking at him and being close to him made her entire body react. “Uhm…” She cleared her throat and looked away. Then she noticed that they were no longer in that fine house. Richard and the man named Symon were nowhere to be seen, either. “Huh…” Her frown deepened at the sight of the ocean, whose crashing waves made sounds to relax anyone who cared to listen to it. “Where are we?”
“Unmistakably,” he mumbled, his eyes refusing to stop watching her no matter how much she tried to evade his, “you are my mate, Rose.” He gently pressed into her thigh, and a particular fiery burst in her vagina, she became aroused.
Further confused by the dynamic of that moment, she forced herself out of his grasp.
“Okay…” She laughed madly after confirming that they were indeed on a tranquil beach. “Fine. We were at that house, now we are here. Richard was there, but he is not here.” Her hands gestured like crazy while her lips grinned. “And…. you…” She turned to the man. “You…”
“Rune.” His fine voice replied as he pocketed his hands (for real, every time he did that, he always became an irresistible work of art).
“Huh?”
“Rune. My name.”
“Rune? Or Ruin?” Whichever one it was, Rose thought his name was unusual.
“Rune.”
“Ahh,” she gasped with amusement, nodding as if she totally understood the situation, “I see.” Her brows jerked. “Mr. Rune, please,” her hands clasped in front of her, “can you explain what is happening? Why are we here? And what on earth is that mate thing you said? Wait, is this some sort of prank? Are you trying to mess with me?” Her confusion became lethal as she became ready to throw some punches. “If you try shit, Mr. Rune, I will-”
“Where was this energy when that man was trying to overpower you?”
“I…” Her voice cracked, and she resumed finding the man annoying. “You are too harsh, Mr. Rune.”
“No. I am truthful. And you…” He stepped closer and held her fisted hands. “You need to rest.” Tenderness rested in his eyes, and she listened to him.
After a deep exhale, she settled on the sandy ground, and he sat beside her.
Her eyes fixed on the ocean as she whispered, “None of this makes sense.”
“It would be weird if it did.”
She glanced at him. “How and why am I your mate? How and why are we in this place?”
“You are my mate because we are destined to be. We are in this place because I brought you here. I don’t know how your husband found my house, but I was not going to wait for him to harm you again.”
That explained nothing.
Rose scoffed and buried her feet in the smoothness of the ground. “Rune,” she called.
He responded with a heavy, “Oh,” and placed his hands on his chest.
Rose almost shifted closer in concern. “Is something wrong? Is your heart in pain?”
Rune lifted his head. “My heart is not in pain. It is alive. The way you just called my name… oh my goodness…” His eyes sparkled. “It made my heart beat so good.” Rose was taken aback. “Rose,” he sat straight, “if you are confused, I can show you what I mean by we are mates.”
“Show me how?”
“By loving you and making love to you.”
She choked and coughed hard. Then she laughed, but that crashed when she saw the seriousness in his eyes. “You are not joking,” she said.
A sharp breath, and his head tilted such that his eyes looked at her with every possible ounce of sexiness embedded in them.
“I know you lied about not feeling anything from our kiss. If we do more, you will no longer find it easy to lie about how you feel when you are with me.”
“Y-” She jumped out and started fanning her face. “What sort of nonsense is that? I am married.”
He looked up at her, that sexy look still trying to bring her to her knees.
“Are you?”
“I-” She pinched her eyes. “You are delusional. I can never be with you.”
The smirk Rune wore made her aware that she told another lie. Somewhere in her mind, she was already kissing him, and relishing his touch in every way possible.
‘Ugh…’ Rose groaned in her thoughts. ‘Control, Rose. Control yourself. All you did was kiss this man.’
Rune finally looked away from her. “Before things get hectic, I would like to come clean.”
“About?”
“I am not human.”
How was she supposed to react to that? Rose thought. She then further reasoned that he was trying to joke to lessen the tension of that moment.
“I am not joking.” His response to her thoughts made her jump back, her eyes wide. “Rose,” he returned to looking into her eyes, “I am a werewolf. I used to be the Alpha King of the Brunia pack but was banished a few months ago. Since the day I stepped into Bruania, your country, I battled with severe depression and mourned the things and people I thought I had. That was until I saw you for the first time.” His gaze lowered, and a graceful smile rested on his lips. “Unfortunately, you were very sad that day. But seeing you made my heart flutter. My dead heart felt things that made it want to live.” Their eyes met again. “You did that, Rose. With that alone, I knew you were my mate.”
After that, Rune said nothing more, causing heavy silence while Rose considered what to say.
With narrowed eyes, she peeked at the man at intervals. She could not believe he just said he was a werewolf, a half man, half beast. And she could not believe that she was not disgusted in the depths of her soul. She was just surprised on the surface level. Maybe that was because she had already dealt with a particular beast that had been pretending to be a human who loved her.
“You are not saying anything, Rose. You keep staring.”
“Uhm…”
“If my truth makes you hate me, I am afraid it does not matter. I will not let go of a chance to have peace in my life. I also want you to grab this chance to experience love and peace.”
“Are you saying your love for me is pure?”
He stood up. This time, he maintained a distance between them. “I don’t know yet. But I know that I will not rest until I learn how to love my mate properly.”
“You keep saying I am your mate.” Her hands clasped behind her, and that moment became very solemn, the seas bore witness to it. “Are you going to love me as some sort of duty?”
“Is there something wrong with loving you because it is my duty? When I do that, would I not realise that I need to love you because I do love you? After we have spent some time together, I am sure it will not be hard for me to realise that. Just standing with you in this place calms me, and I already love that about you.”
Rose’s eyes blinked to the side. The excitement, pride and certainty in his response made her soul desire the love he was describing, but she stopped herself before she could yearn for it some more.
“Do not hold back, Rose,” he gently admonished.
“How are you doing that?” That was the second time he spoke in response to the words in her thoughts.
“I told you, we are mates. My response to your inner thoughts is evidence that proves it.”
“Okay.” She stopped him before he could mess up her mind with his werewolf talks. “I hear you.” She hurried back to considering the affection he was offering her. “I have to think about this.”
“Take all your time, Rose. How about we head inside? It is starting to get chilly.”
She glanced at the house behind them and shook her head. “I have to think about it now. I have too much at stake. My heart especially.”
“Should we kiss again? Maybe that would help with the decision,” he teased, but she took that suggestion seriously. Rune noticed that. “Rose?”
Beyond making a decision to stay and see what a life with Rune would bring, she needed their kiss to distract her bad memories. She needed a new touch to wipe away Richard’s wicked ones.
So, after a deep gulp, she shook her head and said, “Kiss me.”
“Huh?”
“Kiss me again, Rune.”
Rune’s feet rushed in response to her statement. He cupped both sides of her face; his eyes showed how much he wanted her, and the kiss happened, his hunger for her lips still present in the way he kissed her.
SIXTY THREE“Takashi?” Rune was not familiar with that name, and the woman’s face was yet to ring a bell. “Are you a Beta wolf?”“Seriously?” Her lamentations grew. “You shouldn’t be this clueless. I just told you my name!”“Do you know how many wolves I dealt with while I was Alpha King? Lots of names flew past my ears day in day out.”Her shoulders slumped as if defeated. “I can’t believe this,” she muttered. “You are sucking out all the fun, Alpha Rune.” Rune watched as she ducked her head for some seconds. And when she slightly lifted it, he saw the evil lurking in her soul. And it became clear… Whoever she was didn’t matter. It never did. What was more important was what she was planning.“Okay, Takashi,” Rune nodded as if trying to soothe her anger, “what do you want?”“I…” Her body turned a quarter of the way. “I am Maxon’s Luna.”“Oh…” Rune did not bother himself with the things that happened after his banishment, so he didn’t know much about his brother’s reign. “I see…”“A
“Is there something going on?” Keith asked as they walked past the crowd in front of the large building they were heading towards.“It’s none of our business,” Symon replied. “Our focus is not on them.”Rose nodded in agreement to what the Beta said, but she also inwardly acknowledged Keith’s observation. The crowd they met was not a normal amount, it reeked of something ominous. But, she quickly got rid of that feeling and intensified her strides to catch up to the he-wolves and… Catherine. Rose did not want to look at that she-wolf; if she did, she would be strongly tempted to drag the woman to a corner and beat her up. Of course, that would not do much to soothe her anger, but the fact that Catherine did that devious thing to Rune made her heart burn with fury. “You cannot go further than this,” an unfamiliar voice said.Rose looked up and saw that they had left the ground floor. She loosened her fists and noticed the huge man before them. Based on the heavy vests and slightly hi
“You fucking bastard!”That did not come from Catherine, so Maxon was super startled. And he was more startled when a sharp punch slapped his head from behind. “What the-”“What did you just say?! Huh? You took Rune to where?”That feminine voice was very unfamiliar, so was the face of the voice. But, he could not lie, the woman glaring at him looked quite alluring and the degree of pain from her punch made her more interesting.“And you,” he watched as she faced Catherine, “is it true? Are you the reason Rune is battling so much pain?”“R-Rose…” Catherine stuttered. “The… human,” Maxon spluttered, his back straightening while he reasoned whether to retaliate her punch. “What? Are you going to deny everything? Do you want to claim that he is lying about everything?” the woman kept glaring at Catherine and it was amusing to see the she-wolf looking slightly fearful. “Rose, please…” Catherine stepped back with caution. “That is not our focus right now. He…” She looked at Maxon. “He
Maxon never knew a day would come when he would enjoy the meals served by the castle chefs. He usually depended on the meals his wolf hunted in the dead of night. But on this very day, the food that the human nature of werewolves desired kept vanishing down his throat with great ease.Getting rid of Rune was that much of a pleasure to his soul. Even his irregular sleep lifestyle was easily fixed. “Maxon!” The sound of his mother’s rage was also music to his ears. As she rushed into the grand yet almost empty dining room, he watched her with a confident smile plastered on his face. “Where is he?”He put down the rib in his hand. He then relaxed and dared the Luna Dowager’s presence. “Who?”“Rune!”“Easy, mother. You are not so young anymore.”“Where…?” She bared her teeth. “... the fuck is your brother?”“In a good place. Don’t worry, he is not dead.”“I clearly told you-”“I told you to stop being nosy,” he calmly cut her short. “Why are you being so stubborn? How come all you ever s
Symon could have missed Rose walking into the hideout with the ex-Luna behind her. Thank goodness he listened to the voice in his gut that told him to stay back for a few minutes to rest.“Rose!” Omega Keith rushed to hug the woman whose eyes seemed to be searching for Rune’s presence. “Oh…” The he-wolf’s shaky voice pitied the human. “What happened to you? Who did this to you?”“Um…” She was still searching, her neck craning as though her mate would walk out of one of the nearby rooms with a grand smile. This view increased the sorrow in Symon’s heart, and tears inevitably formed in his eyes. He felt shitty, he could only imagine how worse the woman would feel once she learned that her mate was missing. As he turned to the side to wipe those tears, he properly noticed Catherine, who was also searching for Rune’s presence.“Catherine,” he sternly called her. “Why are you here?”“I know about it.” She shifted closer, her eyes rabid with desperation. “I know he is missing.”“Uhm…” The
For many minutes, Rose remained in that spot. There was no special reason, it just happened that she could not rush out of that room after the incredulous freedom she had just witnessed. Or perhaps that was the very reason. Her mind was still in awe of that mighty presence, one part of her rejoiced that Richard was no longer alive to torture her, while another part of her soul feared that the miracle she witnessed was a figment of her imagination. After shaking her head to clear her multiplying thoughts, Rose’s sorrowful lips formed a smile, and the slight ache that followed that motion assured her and the latter part of her thoughts that she did not imagine anything. She was indeed free from Richard, free from his demonic nature and desire to destroy her. She could now walk out and reunite with Rune, who she worried would be battling with severe frustration. So, she did that. She got up, walked past Richard's mortal body and left the room. Upon entering the next room, she met ma
“He is still not back?” Symon’s worry was now very uncontrollable. It had been two days since Alpha Rune left to search for Rose. The Beta found it worrisome that Rune did not return with or without Rose, so he went out to find him. But hours of searching yielded no result, and his desire to find Rune waiting in the hideout was instantly crushed when he got there. “We have searched everywhere. We even sent some of our wolves to spy on the castle, but nothing has come out of it. What if something terrible happened?” Omega Keith could not hide his anguish. “I don’t want to think the worst,” answered Symon, his eyes tightly shut to help him endure the brewing terror in his soul. “I don't want to.”“But, his curse. Beta Symon, that curse is merciless. What if he is stuck somewhere, lying unconscious? We have to-” Keith slapped his thigh. He could not hide his anguish. “Where else can we search? What else can we do to find him?”Symon sighed as he sat to relieve the ache in his feet. “Th
From the depths of her soul. Rose released a breath that shook her so much that her body stayed fixed, her eyes wide and unblinking. Her mouth gaped, she glared at the evil standing before her, and she cursed the day she met Richard in her mind. Then, she started to wonder if she had always been blind to his true nature. She should have suspected that he was not purely human the day he came to Rune’s house with a rabid, unworldly beast. She should have linked his obsession to find and destroy her to something supernaturally wicked.“Don’t sweat it, Rosie,” Richard said, his dark eyes and terrible smell returning to where they came from. “No matter how you beat yourself up, you will find out that there was no way you could have known my true nature. Even the pastors didn’t know. They were suspicious, but they didn’t know. Well,” he held his chin as if thinking about a deep detail, “back then, I was still human. I had not taken back my powers, so it was very easy to deceive other human
Catherine did not understand how she was patient enough to wait for President Christopher to show up. She was especially angry that when the human eventually showed up, his half-assed answers displayed no regard for her. He made her look so foolish, she almost slapped his head against the table. But, beyond her desire to make the human bleed, she still needed his connection to get rid of Rune’s mate.Speaking of Rune… It had been so long since she had seen him. As she wondered if he was doing fine, she headed into the gateway she opened and readied her soul to be healed by Rune’s precious sight. [break]Christopher could not believe that Rune escaped so easily.Sure, the man was of werewolf nature, but the silver element existed to tame the strength of that nature. So, just how did his precious weapon escape?Christopher tried to tame his anger, but he ended up denting a close by trash bin. If only that stupid professor had just allowed him to place guards in that fucking room! Wh
