“Ugh.” Rose’s head hurt so much that she would have thought she was hungover from too much alcohol if she didn’t have a massive life crisis going on. “Damn it.” This time the groan was louder, it made her stomach rumble. With squinted eyes and scrunched lips, she rushed out of bed and rattled the knob of a closeby door.
Glad that the door led to a bathroom, she dramatically slid towards the water closet and released the vomit that had been threatening to ruin her throat.
“Ugh. God,” she groaned harder when she peeked at the vomit. It was a result of inadequate feeding over the past few days. Once she threw everything up, her stomach became very empty, and it ached to be fed. But all the throwing up made her weak, she only managed to crawl to the bedroom.
Once at the feet of the bed, she lay down and stared at the bluish ceiling. Then, the tears came back. Silently, they streamed down her face and blurred her sight so much that she did not notice when someone entered the room and stared down at her.
“What are you doing?” Unmistakably, that was the stranger speaking.
She wiped her tears as though that would stop them and paid attention to the man peering at her with his mystical eyes.
“What does it look like?” Her voice was still feeble. Rose hated that because it reminded her of how Richard broke her.
“I doubt crying is a pastime hobby for you.” He exhaled and moved to the edge of the bed. Once seated, he briefly closed his eyes and said, “You are a mess, Rose.”
Annoyed by his art of stating the obvious, she retorted, “How on earth do you know my name? Are you a stalker? Who exactly are you?”
“Are you always so rash in your thinking, Rose?” His calmness humbled her outburst. “That is disappointing.” He looked away from her. “Listen, you need to rest more. Let us talk later.”
“No.” She sat up fast. “I should leave. Thank you for your help so far.”
“Leave?” He was more amused than annoyed. “In this deplorable state? Where do you intend to go? Did you build a life elsewhere that your husband is not aware of? Where do you want to go? Tell me, Rose.”
Despite the softness in his voice, his words insulted her. With gritted teeth, fury settled in her eyes while bitterness bloated her throat.
“That is …. That is none of your business. I will sort out my life as I please.” She stood up after gaining a little strength. “You are a stranger. Nothing else. I appreciate your help, but you don’t get to use that as an opportunity to control me.”
“Control?” He got up as well. For the first time since he stepped into the room, he showed an emotion different from calmness. “You think I am trying to control your life?”
She nodded while struggling to tear her eyes off his lips. “What else is it? Huh?” Rose argued. “Why else would a man I barely know help me? Mister Man, I refuse to be controlled. Do not hold me back.”
“You are very foolish, Rose.”
“What? How dare you insult me?”
“You insulted me first,” he returned.
Rose noticed that despite his hurled words, he was not displaying visible anger. It was weird. “How did I do that?”
“You mocked my intentions, Rose. I am here because you are the one I am meant to love, nothing else.”
“Huh?” Her mind frowned at his statement. “What the heck is that supposed to mean? Love?” That word annoyed her. “Love me? Are you high?”
“Haven’t you felt something since we met?”
‘Oh,’ Rose inwardly exclaimed. She could not deny that she didn’t feel something. She felt a lot that could not be explained.
“When we kissed,” he stepped closer, his scent tickling her nose to its delight, “did you feel nothing, Rose?”
“Huh…” She still could not look him in the eyes. He would be able to tell what was on her mind because her eyes could never tell a lie.
“Tell me, Rose. Tell me you didn’t feel a thing, and I will let you leave right now.” The man’s eyes narrowed with slight agony as if saying it would be hard for him to watch her leave that place.
But Rose was determined not to fall for another Richard scam. Sure, with that man, she felt things that made her believe she could be genuinely happy and at peace. But what if all those were illusions? What if she was trying to lie to herself by thinking that the presence of the man was supposed to heal her pains?
“I did not feel a thing,” she almost choked while saying that.
“What?” Disbelief filled his low voice.
“I did not feel a thing. Even when we kissed.”
“Look at me when you are speaking, Rose.”
She shook her head and continued to look at the bedside drawer in her sight. “I cannot leave my life in another man’s hands. I refuse to do it.” Her legs began to move backwards. “Once again, thank you for everything. I owe you a lot.” She finally got the strength to turn. “Do not follow me. As you said, you will let me leave.” Her eyes pinched close for a second because her soul felt hesitant. But she pushed the emotion away seconds later and walked out of the room, her bare feet feeling the surrounding chilliness she didn’t notice earlier.
As she moved, she noticed that she was in an interesting house that combined modern and rustic architecture in a way that made her want to sit down and stare. However, with no time to spare, she walked past the giant paintings in the large corridor and desperately searched for the front door.
She moved from here to there for many minutes but failed to find the exit. She was almost screaming in frustration when someone appeared in front of her. With his lengthy and shiny black hair resting on his shoulders, the casually dressed man had a physique smaller than her helper, but it was impressive either way. For a brief second, she acknowledged how good he looked in his sweatpants.
“Who are you?” a soft tone demanded as he lifted a tray from the table close to him. “Wait?” His eyes became rabid. “Are you a thief? How on earth did you enter this place?”
Rose found it weird that he was not looking at her, but since the question was clearly directed at her, her hands waved as she replied, “Wh-what? No! Of course not. I-”
“Symon, down,” the man she walked away from entered the scene, his hands pocketed, his eyes fixed on her.
“But-”
“Down.”
“I—” Rose tried to explain why she was still in the house. He cut her short with an embrace. She melted into his chest. With relaxed shoulders and a face that displayed how much peace she felt from that action, every part of her relished his hug, her soul included.
In reaction, the man called Symon gasped, and the tray in his hand fell. But that was not the only reaction to the embrace.
“I fucking knew it!” a voice hollered from behind, and Rose shook, she almost fainted if not for the man hugging her. “You two have been meeting up, haven’t you? So much for a fucking virgin wife! Fuck you two!”
A loud shatter followed, and Rose screamed in fear of Richard’s anger. If the man holding her didn’t immediately lift her into his arms, she would have hid behind him.
Richard picked up a fragment of the vase he broke. “She is mine, you fucking prick!” he screamed, his hand bleeding as he pressed the broken piece into his palm. “Rose is mine!” With increased anger, his body lunged at them, his weapon directed at Rose while the thirst for someone’s blood raged in his eyes.
Rune had barely reached halfway when Takashi and Catherine saw him. Briefly, while his beastly feet continued running, he contemplated between crushing them or leaving to find Rose. He chose to crush them. They were the orchestrators of the grand wickedness Bruania was about to face, it would be foolish of him to let them leave that place alive. So, his feet changed their course, and with grit, he headed for the she-wolves who jumped out of the way when he had almost rammed into their bodies. “Look at you,” Takashi taunted, her body morphing into her wolf. “You fucking Lycan liar.”“R-Rune,” Catherine stuttered where she was, her eyes widened in fear of his appearance. There was no need to entertain their words. He headed for Takashi and with one swipe, he grabbed the left hind limb of her wolf and snapped it so hard, a bone pierced the skin and blood gushed out. As the howls of the injured wolf satisfied him, he rushed to Catherine, who deserved the worst punishment for all she
“Who could it be?” Keith scratched the back of his head, his face wearing great confusion. “Takashi? She’s the Luna. But I doubt her influence is huge enough to command the army wolves.”The ground trembled again, some screams accompanied that.“We cannot know it all, pup,” Runabis answered, his hands reaching to receive his cup of steaming tea. To calm their nerves, Symon had decided to make some tea. “Focusing on sending the army back should be our next step. The humans won’t survive when the wolves start to strike.”Keith sipped from his cup. “And that will be soon.” He turned to the he-wolf next to him. “Alpha Maxon?” No response. “Alpha Maxon?”“Leave him,” Symon said. “He is in shock. When he’s ready to stop being useless, he’ll come around.”“What do you have against him? You hate him more than I do.” Keith questioned. The Beta sighed deeply as he sat next to Rose, who appeared asleep, one of her hands on her growing belly. “What’s not to hate about him?” He saw Rose’s belly m
“Jeez,” Takashi could not stop massaging her neck, “thank the goddess you came when you did.” If Catherine had been a second late, Alpha Rune would have killed her. That made her briefly wonder if the belts holding him down would be able to function till late in the night. “How come you are here though?” She faced the she-wolf who was admiring the Alpha like the priceless gem he was. “You were hell-bent on staying hidden.”“I did not have a choice.” Catherine pulled her hair into a loose ponytail. “My clone was acting up.”“You destroyed her, right?” Catherine nodded, and Takashi felt a swell of relief as she stopped caressing her neck. She then continued, “She was too accommodating of Maxon’s feelings. All she had to do was lure Maxon to the idea of turning Rune and Rose into criminals.”“She began acting up after she and Maxon met Christopher for the first time,” Catherine added, her voice sharp. “She stopped listening to my orders. She even blocked my access to her audio and visual
“What is your plan? How do you intend to use me?” She did not respond. With a sly smile, she backed her steps and walked to the other end of the room. “Answer me, Takashi.”“Let me tell you a story,” she finally said, her voice sounding like a distant echo. Next thing, she was dragging a chair with her, her smile still intact. Once she was barely inches away from him, she placed the chair and sat on it. “I am sure you know it, but I need to make a point.”The burden growing in Rune’s heart could not handle the she-wolf’s dilly-dally. But with his inability to escape, he really had no choice but to pull through it. So, with a deep sigh, he asked, “What story?”She crossed her legs. “There is a connection between our pack and Bruania. There is a reason why it is the only country we can enter with ease.”“So?”“Long ago, before humans and other creatures were separated, the Kingdom of Brunia was known for its richness and peace. However, sometime after, certain species of wolves started
“Takashi?” Rune was not familiar with that name, and the woman’s face was yet to ring a bell. “Are you a Beta wolf?”“Seriously?” Her lamentations grew. “You shouldn’t be this clueless. I just told you my name!”“Do you know how many wolves I dealt with while I was Alpha King? Lots of names flew past my ears day in day out.”Her shoulders slumped as if defeated. “I can’t believe this,” she muttered. “You are sucking out all the fun, Alpha Rune.” Rune watched as she ducked her head for some seconds. And when she slightly lifted it, he saw the evil lurking in her soul. And it became clear… Whoever she was didn’t matter. It never did. What was more important was what she was planning.“Okay, Takashi,” Rune nodded as if trying to soothe her anger, “what do you want?”“I…” Her body turned a quarter of the way. “I am Maxon’s Luna.”“Oh…” Rune did not bother himself with the things that happened after his banishment, so he didn’t know much about his brother’s reign. “I see…”“Alpha Rune,” s
“Is there something going on?” Keith asked as they walked past the crowd in front of the large building they were heading towards.“It’s none of our business,” Symon replied. “Our focus is not on them.”Rose nodded in agreement to what the Beta said, but she also inwardly acknowledged Keith’s observation. The crowd they met was not a normal amount, it reeked of something ominous. But, she quickly got rid of that feeling and intensified her strides to catch up to the he-wolves and… Catherine. Rose did not want to look at that she-wolf; if she did, she would be strongly tempted to drag the woman to a corner and beat her up. Of course, that would not do much to soothe her anger, but the fact that Catherine did that devious thing to Rune made her heart burn with fury. “You cannot go further than this,” an unfamiliar voice said.Rose looked up and saw that they had left the ground floor. She loosened her fists and noticed the huge man before them. Based on the heavy vests and slightly hi
“You fucking bastard!”That did not come from Catherine, so Maxon was super startled. And he was more startled when a sharp punch slapped his head from behind. “What the-”“What did you just say?! Huh? You took Rune to where?”That feminine voice was very unfamiliar, so was the face of the voice. But, he could not lie, the woman glaring at him looked quite alluring and the degree of pain from her punch made her more interesting.“And you,” he watched as she faced Catherine, “is it true? Are you the reason Rune is battling so much pain?”“R-Rose…” Catherine stuttered. “The… human,” Maxon spluttered, his back straightening while he reasoned whether to retaliate her punch. “What? Are you going to deny everything? Do you want to claim that he is lying about everything?” the woman kept glaring at Catherine and it was amusing to see the she-wolf looking slightly fearful. “Rose, please…” Catherine stepped back with caution. “That is not our focus right now. He…” She looked at Maxon. “He
Maxon never knew a day would come when he would enjoy the meals served by the castle chefs. He usually depended on the meals his wolf hunted in the dead of night. But on this very day, the food that the human nature of werewolves desired kept vanishing down his throat with great ease.Getting rid of Rune was that much of a pleasure to his soul. Even his irregular sleep lifestyle was easily fixed. “Maxon!” The sound of his mother’s rage was also music to his ears. As she rushed into the grand yet almost empty dining room, he watched her with a confident smile plastered on his face. “Where is he?”He put down the rib in his hand. He then relaxed and dared the Luna Dowager’s presence. “Who?”“Rune!”“Easy, mother. You are not so young anymore.”“Where…?” She bared her teeth. “... the fuck is your brother?”“In a good place. Don’t worry, he is not dead.”“I clearly told you-”“I told you to stop being nosy,” he calmly cut her short. “Why are you being so stubborn? How come all you ever s
Symon could have missed Rose walking into the hideout with the ex-Luna behind her. Thank goodness he listened to the voice in his gut that told him to stay back for a few minutes to rest.“Rose!” Omega Keith rushed to hug the woman whose eyes seemed to be searching for Rune’s presence. “Oh…” The he-wolf’s shaky voice pitied the human. “What happened to you? Who did this to you?”“Um…” She was still searching, her neck craning as though her mate would walk out of one of the nearby rooms with a grand smile. This view increased the sorrow in Symon’s heart, and tears inevitably formed in his eyes. He felt shitty, he could only imagine how worse the woman would feel once she learned that her mate was missing. As he turned to the side to wipe those tears, he properly noticed Catherine, who was also searching for Rune’s presence.“Catherine,” he sternly called her. “Why are you here?”“I know about it.” She shifted closer, her eyes rabid with desperation. “I know he is missing.”“Uhm…” The
