Zara's POV

"Can I take her too?"

The words hung in the air.

My heart stopped, and my breath caught in my throat. Did he just... did the Alpha just ask to take me?

I stared at him, my eyes wide with shock. His silver eyes met mine, and I gulped down nothing.

Marcus Drake's laugh broke the silence. It was loud and forced, like he was trying to cover up his own surprise.

"Take her?" He laughed again, shaking his head. "Alpha Kael, surely you're joking. That one? She's nothing but a menace."

My stomach twisted. I kept my eyes down, my hands clenched into fists at my sides.

"Her father was a traitor," Marcus continued, his voice turning cold. "Her father, Garrett Ashford, conspired with rogues to kill our Alpha King. He was plotting against the pack, meeting with enemies in the night. We had no choice but to execute him."

Lies. It was all lies.

My chest burned with the need to scream, to tell them the truth. My father was innocent. He'd been sick, bedridden for weeks. He couldn't have met with anyone, let alone rogues. But I bit my tongue so hard I tasted blood.

Speaking up would only make things worse.

"She's inherited her father's bad blood," Marcus went on. "Rebellious. Disobedient. Honestly, Alpha, you'd be wasting your time with her."

I forced myself to breathe slowly, to keep my face blank. My nails dug into my palms.

The Alpha said nothing. I could feel his eyes on me, but I didn't dare look up.

"I appreciate your... interest," Marcus said carefully. "But perhaps one of the other servants would be more suitable? Someone more...refined...less filthy?"

Seraphina leaned forward, her voice sweet. "I'm sure we can find someone much better for you, Alpha Kael.

"Perhaps," the Alpha said calmly.

The rest of the dinner passed in a blur. I stood against the wall, my mind spinning. Why had the Alpha asked for me? What did he want? And why did my wolf react so strongly to him?

When the meal finally ended, I followed the other servants back to the kitchen. My legs felt weak, my head fuzzy.

"Did you see the way the Alpha looked at her?" one of the maids whispered.

"Shh! Don't talk about it," another hissed back.

I ignored them, focusing on putting away the dishes. My hands shook as I worked. All I wanted was to go back to my tiny room and hide.

The kitchen door swung open, and a guard stepped in. His eyes scanned the room before landing on me.

"You. Zara."

My heart sank.

"The Young Mistress wants to see you. Now."

The other maids went quiet. Some of them looked at me with pity. Others just looked relieved it wasn't them being called.

I wiped my hands on my dress and followed the guard out. Each step toward Seraphina's room felt heavier than the last. My stomach twisted with fear.

What did she want? Was she angry about what happened at dinner? Of course she was angry. I braced myself for the punishment I was about to get.

The guard stopped outside her door and knocked once before opening it.

"Go in," he said, his voice flat.

I stepped inside, and the door closed behind me with a soft click.

Seraphina sat in a large armchair near the window, her legs crossed elegantly. A dangerous smile playing at the corner of her lips.

I dropped to my knees immediately, my head bowed.

"Young Mistress, please," I said quickly, my voice shaking. "What happened at dinner was a mistake. I didn't mean to ruin anything. I swear, I didn't try to—"

"Be quiet."

I shut my mouth, my heart pounding.

Seraphina stood up slowly and walked toward me. I could hear the click of her heels against the floor.

She stopped in front of me. Then stared down at me for a long moment, saying nothing. She looked at the filthy dress I wore and made a disgusted sound.

"Even in this smelly dress," she said slowly, "I still don't understand what the Alpha saw in you."

I kept my head down, not daring to speak.

"Oh well," she continued, her voice light and mocking. "Maybe he just wanted a new servant. There's no way he would be interested in a disgusting wrench like you."

Her words stung, but I'd heard worse from her before.

"And how dare you," she hissed, her voice turning sharp. "How dare you try to seduce and flirt with the Alpha? You disgusting slave."

"I didn't—"

Her foot connected with my stomach before I could finish. Pain exploded through me, knocking the air from my lungs. I bent over, clutching my belly, gasping for breath.

"Well," she said, her voice cold. "You won't have that chance anymore."

I looked up at her with tears in my eyes. "What... what do you mean?"

She smiled. It was a cruel smile, one that made my blood run cold.

"Guards!" she called out.

The door opened, and two large guards stepped inside.

"Take her away," Seraphina said casually, like she was asking them to take out the trash.

Panic shot through me. "Wait, where—"

I tried to stand, tried to run, but my body was too slow. One of the guards grabbed my arm, his grip was so tight.

"No, please!" I struggled against them, my feet sliding on the floor. "Young Mistress, please!"

Seraphina just watched, her arms crossed, that same cruel smile on her face.

The second guard moved behind me. I saw something in his hand, something heavy.

"Wait—"

Pain exploded in the back of my head. White light flashed across my vision, and then everything went black.

When I woke up, everything was dark.

My head throbbed with pain. I tried to touch it, but my arms were pressed tight against my sides. I couldn't move them.

Where was I?

I blinked, trying to see, but there was nothing. Just darkness. Thick, heavy darkness that surrounded me.

"Help!" I screamed, my voice echoing in the tiny space. "Someone help me!"

But no one came.

The air was thick and stale. Sweat dripped down my face, mixing with the tears I couldn't stop.

I pressed my hands against the walls again, pushing with all my strength. Nothing. They were solid, unwavering.

"Please," I whispered, my voice breaking.

But the darkness just pressed in closer.

I didn't know where I was. I didn't know how long I'd been here.

Then suddenly I placed my hand on my chest gasping for air, I was suffocating.

“Please.. somebody…

  • Claimed By The Ruthless Alpha    Chapter Seventeen-THE WHISPERING MARSHES

Zara's POVThe ground was getting softer with every step I took and the water started to seep into the gaps of my boots until my socks were soaked and heavy, and the fog was so thick that I could barely see the feral wolf walking just a few feet ahead of me as we pushed deeper into the center of the marshes. Silas had stayed behind at the edge of the tree line because he said this was a journey I had to take by myself if I wanted the spirits to listen to me, and as the mist wrapped around my shoulders I started to hear faint voices that sounded like they were coming from the very bottom of the stagnant pools of water. At first I thought it was just the wind blowing through the reeds but then the whispers started to sound like people I used to know back at the Drake estate, and they were saying things that made my chest tighten with a familiar kind of shame that I had been trying to outrun since the night my father died."You really think an Alpha like Kael would want a broken girl

  • Claimed By The Ruthless Alpha    Chapter Sixteen-CROSSING THE BORDER

Kael's POVThe climb up the rocky slope was steep and the loose gravel kept sliding out from under my boots but I didn't slow down because the scent of honey was getting stronger with every meter I gained, and Silas was right behind me with his hand on his sword while the rest of the tracking unit stayed back to secure the base of the cliff. We reached a small ledge where the air felt cooler and I saw the dark opening of a cave that was hidden behind a thick curtain of ivy and moss, and I didn't even wait for a signal before I pushed through the vines and stepped into the small cavern with my claws already beginning to prick at my fingertips. The interior was empty of people but it was filled with the smell of woodsmoke and bitter medicines and I saw a small wooden bench where a bowl of dark liquid was still sitting and letting off a tiny bit of steam into the cold air."She was here and she was here recently because I can still feel the heat of her fever in the air and the bond is

  • Claimed By The Ruthless Alpha    Chapter Fifteen-THE BETA’S SECRET

Damien's POVThe floorboards in the upstairs hallway had a tendency to creak near the linen closet so I made sure to step close to the wall where the wood was sturdier and I waited for a few seconds after every movement to make sure no one was coming, and the house was finally quiet now that the engagement guests had gone home and the servants were busy cleaning up the mess in the ballroom. My head was still fuzzy from the whiskey I had been drinking all night but the cold air in the corridor helped clear some of the fog and I reached the door to Marcus's private study while holding my breath and praying that he was still in the cellar checking on the wine inventory like he usually did after a party. I gripped the brass handle and turned it slowly until the latch clicked open and I slipped inside the room and shut the door behind me and for a moment I just stood there in the dark while listening to the sound of my own frantic heart hitting my ribs."I shouldn't be here and if he fin

  • Claimed By The Ruthless Alpha    Chapter Fourteen-THE SEER’S HUT

Zara's POVThe air in the small hut was thick with the smell of drying weeds and woodsmoke and I struggled to keep my eyes open as Silas set me down on a wooden bench that felt hard against my back, and I looked around the room and saw bundles of herbs hanging from the rafters and jars filled with things I didn't want to name sitting on every available shelf. My hand was still throbbing with a steady heat and I watched as Silas moved toward a stone hearth to stir a pot of something that smelled like bitter roots and old dirt."Drink this and don't complain about the taste because it’s the only thing that’s going to stop that infection from taking your arm by morning," Silas said as he handed me a wooden bowl filled with a dark and steaming liquid."I don't even know who you are or why you’re helping me and I want to know how you knew my father back then," I said while I took a small sip and nearly gagged because the liquid was as bitter as I expected it to be."I was a guard for

  • Claimed By The Ruthless Alpha    Chapter Thirteen-THE SILVER MANOR

Kael's POVThe heavy iron gates of the Silver Manor swung open before I even reached them and I didn't stop to acknowledge the guards who were bowing as I rode past because my chest felt like it was being squeezed by a giant hand and every breath I took was heavy with a dull ache that wasn't my own, and I knew it was the mate-bond reacting to the pain Zara was feeling wherever she was hidden in those mountains. I dismounted my horse before it had even come to a full stop and tossed the reins to a stable boy who looked startled by the dirt and blood on my clothes and I marched straight toward the main hall while Silas and the rest of my men struggled to keep up with my pace. The interior of my home was usually a place of quiet and order but today the stone walls felt like they were closing in on me and I could hear the servants whispering as I passed them because they could clearly see the anger radiating off my shoulders and the way my eyes were still flashing with a silver light.

  • Claimed By The Ruthless Alpha    Chapter Twelve-HOLLOW VICTORY

Seraphina's POVThe ballroom was filled with the smell of expensive lilies and the sound of a string quartet playing a slow tune that was supposed to be romantic, but the air felt thick and uncomfortable because half the guests were whispering about the Alpha’s sudden departure and the other half were staring at the empty seat where Zara’s father used to sit during council meetings. I kept a tight smile on my face while I adjusted the silk gloves covering my hands and I looked over at Damien who was standing by the punch bowl with a glass of dark amber liquid that he hadn't put down once since the party started two hours ago, and his face looked pale and drawn as if he hadn't slept a wink since we watched the carriage pull away from the stables. My father was moving through the crowd and shaking hands with the other pack elders and trying to act like everything was perfect but I could see the way his eyes kept darting toward the front door every time it opened, and I knew he was jus
