Chapter 26-Evelyn

For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak. My mind couldn’t process what I was seeing.

The shadows shifted again, and the figure moved closer, stepping into the light. My heart stopped.

“Adrian?” I whispered.

He looked the same — and yet, not. His shirt was half untucked, sleeves rolled, face streaked with something I couldn’t quite figure out not until he lifted his arm.

Blood.

My throat tightened. “What… what happened to you?”

He didn’t answer — just looked at me with that blank, unreadable stare.

My voice shook. “You have blood on you, Adrian. Why?”

He looked down at his shirt as if noticing for the first time.

“You shouldn’t be here, Evelyn.”

The words hit hard. “Excuse me?”

“You need to leave,” he said quietly. “Now.”

I blinked, stunned. “You’re the one who called me here.”

His jaw tensed. “No, I didn’t.”

“Stop lying!” I snapped. “You sent the flowers. The message. The map. Telling me if I wanted to find Paul, I had to—”

He stepped a little closer. I stumbled back ins

Chapter 37-EvelynI was still waiting for one of them to speak, but all I got were exchange of glares. I knew I was about to scream if I still did not get any responses.I stood there, my fingers curled tightly into my palms, staring between the two men like I was watching a scene unfold that I hadn’t auditioned for. My heart was racing, but my mind felt strangely clear.“Explain,” I said. “Now.”Paul looked at me like I was something fragile he was afraid to touch. “Mi Amor—”“No,” I cut in. “I want you to go straight to the point.”I knew what was coming next was probably something to sugar-coat me to forget whatever this was.Adrian didn’t move. He stayed by the doorway, arms crossed, his presence heavy but restrained, like he was holding himself back on purpose.“Whatever you think this is,” Paul continued, “it’s not—”“Then say it,” I interrupted. “Say what it is.”Paul hesitated.Adrian’s voice cut in again, calm and low. “You should tell her.”Paul shot him a glare. “This has n

Chapter 36-EvelynStillness washed over me. Not the comforting type, or the dramatic kind where your knees buckle or your breath disappears. My body just… stopped. Like it needed a moment to understand what it was seeing before reacting.Paul stood there. Not a shadow. Not a hallucination. Not my imagination finally breaking after weeks of fear and unanswered questions. He stood on Adrian’s uncle’s porch like he belonged there. Like disappearing for two weeks hadn’t shattered my sense of normal. He looked different.Thinner. Rougher. There was a faint cut near his brow and shadows under his eyes that hadn’t been there before. His clothes looked worn, like he’d slept in them too many nights in a row. He looked like someone who had been through something he wasn’t ready to explain. But he was alive. And that alone should have sent me running.“Evelyn?” he said softly.Hearing my name from his mouth felt strange. Familiar, yet distant. Like a voice I used to answer automatically but now

  • Claimed by His Stepbrother    Chapter 35

Chapter 35-AdrianI barely slept.A few hours before sunrise, I was still on the couch with my eyes open, staring into the dark like it had answers I kept missing. Every time I shut my eyes, the image of that necklace around her throat replayed itself. The tension between us had almost swallowed us both whole. The way it broke off too quickly. Too suddenly. Too stupidly. And yeah, it was my fault.Argggggh. I hated that I remembered every second. I hated even more that I wanted to, but it wasn’t my fault she was being difficult. Little brat. My little brat. She had gone quiet after I told her to get some sleep. Wrapped herself under the covers without a word. I waited for her to whisper something—an objection, a question—anything to prove she wasn’t shutting me out completely, even though I was the one who shut down first. But nothing came. Just her silence and the sound of the crickets chirping outside. That silence made the night hellish. Not the couch. Not the stiffness in my back.

  • Claimed by His Stepbrother    Chapter 34

Chapter 34-EvelynI dragged myself up into a sitting position, my breathing uneven as I pulled the rumpled shirt down my thighs. My skin still tingled where Adrian’s hands had been—firm, possessive, punishing in a way that confused the hell out of me.And the embarrassing part?I liked it.I hated that I liked it. I hated that I let him touch me.I hated even more that he stopped before I could… finish. Now he stood by the window, shoulders broad under the dim cabin light, staring out into the darkness like he was trying to pull answers from the air itself.I swallowed and forced out, “Adrian… the necklace… what’s going on?”He didn’t turn. For a long moment, the silence stretched until it hurt. Then he let out a slow breath.“It wasn’t meant to be around your neck,” he said lowly, but I was able to hear. Now he just stared at the necklace pinched between his fingers like it was poison. My fingers instinctively lifted to my now empty neck, that I wondered how he managed to take it off

Chapter 33-EvelynI didn’t know if it was what he said about Paul that scared me the most or the way I was asked to go lie down on the bed.It wasn’t only the command. It was the look in his eyes, and the way his grip on my neck made my insides churn. The room seemed smaller than before. The walls looked closer. The air felt too thick to breathe. I didn’t look away from him—not when his eyes were pinned on me like he was waiting, measuring my next move more than he ever had.I was confused, terrified, and a total mess. I really needed to get away from him before things went south.I freed myself from his hold and moved away. I wasn't going to just dance to his tune—not when he’d been speaking in parables.“No, I won't,” I countered. “Not until you tell me what you meant by saying I was used by Paul.”At least… I needed to know what it meant. What all this meant before I went crazy. He took a slow step closer.“You see, baby… the more you keep defying me, the more your punishment keeps

  • Claimed by His Stepbrother    Chapter 32

Chapter 32-AdrianI was angry, but underneath it, there was fear. And worse than that — guilt. Because I’d promised myself I’d never drag her into the mess her husband created.Yet here she was. Running straight into it.The little reckless menace darting ahead of me really knew how to piss me off. The same mouth that drove me insane, the same body I’d sworn I would explore properly when I finally got my hands on her — and she was using both to run from me.Her long wavy hair flew behind her, the wind catching the strands.God, even from the back, she looked beautiful. And the longer I watched her run, the more something in me twisted.Because it wasn’t just her I was seeing. It was her.****“Liv, get back here!”No response. No slowing. She just kept sprinting deeper into the woods like she’d been born in them. I hated how fast she was — always had. And for the first time, I hated that she got that kind of stubbornness from me.I shouldn’t have let her read that stupid fantasy book.
