All Aveline ever wanted was a mate who would protect and cherish her, someone to take her away from a pack that rejected her the moment they discovered she was wolfless. Instead, she gets public humiliation when her fated mate, Alpha Desmond, rejects her in front of everyone at her best friend's birthday ceremony. But that betrayal is nothing compared to what comes next: being sold as a bride to the cursed Alpha King—a man whose hatred runs deeper than she could ever imagine. Alpha King Thorne doesn't just despise weakness. He despises her. The moment he sees her face, he's reminded of the mate who betrayed him, the one who chose death over being his. Now the Moon Goddess has delivered him what feels like a cruel replacement, and he intends to make her pay for crimes she never committed. Her only purpose? To bear his heir. Nothing more. Stripped of her title and thrown into the servants' quarters, Aveline discovers that surviving his hatred might be harder than enduring her pack's rejection. But those green doe eyes that mirror his dead mate's hold a vulnerability that's slowly breaking through his iron control, and he hates himself for noticing. As dark forces emerge wanting to claim what's his, the Alpha King faces an impossible choice: continue punishing her for another woman's sins, or admit that the girl he's determined to break is the only one capable of bringing the most powerful alpha to his knees. What happens when duty becomes desire, and hatred transforms into something far more dangerous?
もっと見るIt all began on my 13th birthday… the day my parents left for war and never came back.
It was also the day I stopped believing the moon was on my side.
I stood by the doorway, my ears straining to catch what my parents were whispering, and hid my little frame as I watched them whisper in hushed tones.
"If we don't go for this war, we will no longer have a place in the pack; they will all look down on us and on our kids, and they will be turned into a laughingstock," my father said, holding onto my mother's chin like it was the most delicate thing he had ever laid his eyes on, my eyes following his every movement.
"Do you think I care if the pack laughs at us or not? This war is great; we can't fight it, we are going to fight over some damn Moon Sundering, a place where no one has ever set foot. What if we come back dead?" My mother whispered; her voice sounded broken.
"We have no choice; we are among the best warriors the pack has. We need to defend our pack in this war; it isn't just a war, Sarah, it's a war between all the outer border packs—Ashfall, Irontooth, and Red Fang, all of them, they've aligned, all targeting one pack, and Duskfall can't be left behind," my father said in a tense tone.
Three days later, my parents were crouched between me and my brother Ren, who was nine at the time, their eyes filled with hope and promise of return, even though deep down, I was scared to the marrow.
"I promise you, Cherry, this is the last war. Once we win this war against the Crescent Dominion pack, we will have the moon's favor to ourselves, and everyone will live happily ever after," my mother whispered, hugging me tightly as my father followed suit, kissing my forehead and waving me goodbye.
But happily ever after was delayed… Maybe forever. Because they never came back.
I could remember vividly after the first two days, then the third and fourth, and then came the caskets. They died in the war, consumed by the moon for trying to take what wasn't theirs to begin with.
The alpha took us in as if we were his own, and he took care of me and my brother. I grew close with his son, the next in line to be alpha of the Duskfall pack… Desmond. Oh, we were so close, and with my best friend Lily involved? We felt like three inseparable friends who were meant to be together.
But the worst was yet to happen.
On my sixteenth birthday, at the Coming of Fangs festival, everything changed. We dashed out from the mansion, heading towards Moon Hollow, a sacred clearing surrounded by ancient stones and trees, marked by claw symbols of ancestors. The alpha stood at the edge, his gaze towering between Lily and me as he gave me a faint smile. Desmond stood beside him, and Beta Richard wasn't left out; everyone was here.
When it was my turn, being the last, I looked back at the pack; every one of them was waiting for us. Fear gnawed within me, but I succumbed to the river. Allowing the river to consume me, the Moon, now at its brightest, shone within the river.
My skin began to burn, not painfully, but intensely, like fire racing through my blood veins. I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, trapped in that burning moment.
Then it stopped.
I waited. For the change, for my wolf, for everything I'd been taught to expect. For my place in the pack, like everyone else.
I waited.
And waited.
Nothing happened.
When I stepped out, I didn't transform, and I didn't change. I was still standing as a human who had failed to shapeshift into their wolf.
I heard gasps from the crowd, murmurings, sad expressions, disgusted expressions, and some pack members shaking their heads because they had never seen this abomination before.
"I do not know what to say. This has never been heard of before. A wolfless wolf," the alpha thundered in the cold, chilly night with his alpha voice, which sent my small form trembling under his gaze, and Desmond's expression was no different than his; his eyes held hate, anger, and disgust.
"This is a curse! The moon has sent a curse to us..." someone shouted among the crowd, and everyone whispered in loud tones, accepting his words.
"Yes, she's a curse, and she needs to be banished," another person muttered.
"I have never seen this before… a wolfless wolf brought into our pack. This is indeed an abomination. The council and I will decide her fate, whether she shall be removed or meant to serve as an Omega for the sake of her parents." Alpha Philip looked at me, his words piercing through my very soul.
And that very day, my fate was sealed.
I had turned from the daughter of the best warriors in the pack to an Omega.
But one thing no one knew was that I had a wolf in me, but the type that does not shift.
Chapter 25: The CardAVELINEIt's been almost a week since my meeting with Elder Amelia, and I still hadn't seen Thorne. Not even a glimpse of him in the villa corridors or training grounds. It was like he'd disappeared completely, leaving me to wonder if he was avoiding me or if I was just invisible to him.Maybe he was now taking his word seriously about not crossing my path and showing how much he hated me.I'd been attending the academy, but this time for leadership training instead of combat. Learning about pack politics, economics, and diplomatic relations. Things that made my head spin but were apparently essential for a future Luna. Syra wasn't in these classes, thank the goddess, which made my days bearable.Today was different, though. Today was the day before the charity ball at the Blood Moon Pack, and I was terrified. After the encounter with Amelia, I couldn't sleep properly. I kept turning around in bed all night long, and the mark where my former mate had marked me was
Chapter 24: Blaming a MonsterAVELINE"Hatred and pain often look the same, dear. I believe every time he looks at you, he sees her ghost. That's why you've been placed in the servant quarters instead of the Luna suite. That's why he's so cold, so cruel. I have heard how he treats you." She paused, watching my reaction. "But it's also why you might be the only one who can save him, break this curse. I don't know how that can happen. But maybe the goddess brought you here for a reason."I shook my head, overwhelmed. "I don't want to be someone's replacement. I want to be valued for who I am.""And that, my dear, is exactly why you might succeed where others have failed." Amelia stood, moving to a window that overlooked the training grounds. "Lily was strong, yes, but she was also fragile. She couldn't handle the darkness that comes with loving someone like Thorne. She couldn't break the relationship with someone who she was never fated to. But you... you have something she didn't.""Wh
Chapter 23: The Luna TrialsAVELINEMy hands tugged at the black dress I was putting on. This was the third day after Syra had given me a black eye, and I hadn't gone back to the academy. Christy had told me I needed to fully recover, at least since I was wolfless and an omega. It was going to take time for me to recover, and I agreed to stay back.My wolf had been silent and only spoke when needed, which, for some reason, bothered me.And today was the day I was to meet with Elder Amelia. I didn't know what the meeting was all about, but something told me it had something to do with me being a bride.I hadn't gone back to working in the kitchen as the alpha had instructed, and I hadn't met him either. Maybe it was for the best that I haven't met him. I needed time away from him—he was a huge disaster, and yet, there was something about him that made me feel different..."I miss him..."I heard Aries chuckle in my head, and I glared at myself in the mirror, indirectly glaring at her.
Chapter 22: The InvitationTHORNEFuck, what was I doing?I groaned the moment I stepped out of her room. Seeing those wounds on her, those bruises, for some reason made me feel angry and possessive.I smashed my hands against the brick walls as I walked back to the main villa, ignoring the looks from the servants who quickly scampered away when they saw me coming out from the direction of the quarters. This was the first time in ages I was found entering the servant quarters. I was the alpha king, so it was a strange thing to see me there. After my encounter with her this morning, my wolf couldn't stop pacing in my head. For some reason, he wanted her; he loved it when he was close to her, but she didn't even have a wolf in her, which made everything more pointless. But there was something about her, something I was trying to grasp. There was an energy around her that I couldn't place my finger on.But it couldn't be a wolf. It couldn't be that she had a wolf. If she had a wolf, Cael
Chapter 21: Electric TouchAVELINE"Alpha King," Dr. Maxwell said, quickly standing and bowing his head. "I was just finishing up with Luna Aveline's treatment. She has some bruised ribs and multiple lacerations, but nothing that won't heal with rest."Thorne's eyes never left my face. "Leave us."It wasn't a request.Dr. Maxwell gathered his things quickly and left, closing the door behind him with a soft click. Now it was just me and Thorne in my room, and suddenly the space felt even tinier. He stood there for a moment, not saying anything, just looking at me.I probably looked like hell. My hair was a mess, there was dried blood on my lips, and I was sure my face was swollen and bruised. Not exactly the picture of a strong Luna."So," he finally said, his voice eerily calm. "How was your first day of training?"I was taken aback by his question."Great..."I whispered, unsure if that was what I should have said seeing how beaten up I looked. I looked the opposite of what I just sa
Chapter 20: Blood and SurrenderAVELINEI knew shifter werewolves were strong, but I didn't know the ones from the Crescent pack were stronger, more intimidating, and more frightening.Being knocked down with one single lift and finding my body smashed against the tree was enough to send my entire body into loads of pain."Weak, dear Luna. Is this how you will protect our pack and bear the next alpha king?"She said, walking towards me. I struggled so badly to lift myself. Every movement I made, the pain kept increasing.I watched her walk towards me as she bent down to my eye level."We just started. Why don't you fucking stand up, Aveline?"She sneered, roughly kicking me in the stomach, and a scream erupted from my lips, not bearing the pain anymore."Enough!"I heard a familiar voice scream."You don't fight like that. Your opponent is on the ground, and where the fuck is Gamma Nick? He's meant to be here to coach you all."Spencer said, watching as I groaned on the ground, while
