The journey back to the Crescent Crest Pack territory was drowned in suffocating silence.

Inside the sleek black SUV, the leather seats felt cold, and the atmosphere was thick enough to choke on. Isabelle stared out the tinted window, her knuckles white where her fingers dug into her designer skirt. Across from her, Mirabel practically vibrated with restless energy, her eyes bright with an unholy mix of fear and sheer ambition as she repeatedly refreshed the news feeds on her phone.

The moment their car rolled through the iron gates of the pack estate, the rumors had already taken over the local networks. Dozens of pack members stood along the paved driveways, whispering while glancing at their glowing screens.

Aria was kept at the Citadel.

The King claimed the rejected sister.

"Look at them staring!" Isabelle spat, slamming her phone onto the glass coffee table the second they stepped inside the manor. She turned toward the wall-mounted fireplace, her face contorted in pure, unhinged rage. "It isn't fair! She is a nobody! A broken, useless wolf! How does she get to stay in a royal tower while I come back here?!"

"Isabelle, shut your mouth!" Lady Eleanor snapped, turning on her oldest daughter with a look so sharp it made Isabelle recoil. "Do you want Kieran to hear you weeping over another male?!"

Isabelle bit her lip, tears of frustration pricking her eyes. "Mother, you don't understand..."

"I understand survival," Eleanor said, stepping close and grabbing Isabelle by her upper arm, lowering her voice to a lethal whisper. "You chose Alpha Kieran. You used your charm to take him from Aria, and he named you his Luna. But you are not a Lycan, Isabelle. Your bond with Kieran was forged by choice, not by an unbreakable royal bite. If he sees you throwing a hysterical fit because your sister got the King, his pathetic ego will shatter. He will view you as unfaithful, cast you aside, and find a new mate."

Isabelle went completely still, the blood draining from her face.

"You pipe down," Eleanor ordered, her voice cold and calculating. "Put your cold, polished smile back on. You play the regal Luna. Do not ruin your position over jealousy."

Isabelle swallowed hard, forcing her posture straight, burying her rage deep beneath a mask of quiet, icy composure.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Mirabel was already frantically pulling tailored designer gowns and silk dresses from her wardrobe, holding them up in front of her smart mirror.

Eleanor walked into the bedroom, leaning against the doorframe with a heavy sigh. "You are being a fool, Mirabel. Your sister is already marked. Why are you risking yourself in those brutal trials?"

Mirabel turned, her jaw set with stubborn pride. "If Aria’s weak wolf managed to catch his attention in the dark, then what chance does she really have against me? The King said the Selection is still happening! He called her a mistake, Mother! That means the throne is still open, and I am going to take it."

Three days later, the Citadel grounds opened its ancient enchanted gates to the realm.

Every pack across the territories, whether rich or poor, ancient or minor, had been granted the right to send a she-wolf. High-end SUVs, luxury sports cars, and enchanted carriages lined the grand courtyard. For ninety percent of the females stepping out onto the stone driveways, it was the first time they had ever laid eyes on the Lycan Citadel. While high-tech devices kept the modern world connected, most highborn wolves still relied heavily on their ancient magic, viewing their innate supernatural traits as the true marker of nobility.

The competitive air in the grand courtyard was thick, almost volatile. Hundreds of young women glided past the marble fountains, their silk trains sweeping the floor. Heavy scents of jasmine, sweet honey, and anxious wolf pheromones clashed in the cool mountain breeze.

"Is it true?" a young female from a southern pack whispered nervously to her friend, checking her reflection in her phone screen. "Is His Majesty really as terrifying as they say?"

"Nobody knows," her companion replied, her eyes wide as she stared up at the soaring obsidian towers. "Half the nobility has never even seen his face in person. He keeps his life completely private and never holds open court."

Most of these girls had been prepared for months, and some for years. Some were accompanied by frantic mothers giving them last-minute etiquette tips. Others had been told by loving parents to simply do their best and come home safe. There were even highborn Lunas who had put their own chosen mates on hold, refusing to finalize their legal bonds just for the slim, impossible chance of becoming the Lycan Queen.

Then, the crowd parted.

A silence fell over the courtyard as Lady Selene glided through the archway.

She was breathtaking. Dressed in a flowing gown of molten gold that shimmered like sunlight on water, her dark hair fell in intricate braids pinned with rubies. She walked with the natural, terrifying grace of a true high Alpha, her posture radiating absolute dominance and magical aura.

The other candidates stared, deeply intimidated. Several young women instinctively took a step back, whispering in awe. Selene didn't even glance at them. She looked up at the high balconies of the East Tower, her sharp, beautiful eyes narrowed in quiet, calculating promise. She was not here to make friends. She was here to claim what she believed was rightfully hers.

Among the crowd, Mirabel stood near the back, her fingers clutching her leather clutch so tightly her knuckles turned white. Watching Selene’s flawless entrance sent a spike of anxiety through her chest, but she forced her chin up. I will not fail, she thought bitterly. I am going to outshine them all.

High above the chaotic courtyard, standing behind the shadowed glass of his private study, Valerius watched the sea of colorful dresses filling his fortress.

His face was an unreadable mask, but his jaw clenching tightly betrayed his annoyance.

He didn't care about their beauty. He didn't care about their polished manners, their noble titles, or the desperate ambition of their Alpha fathers. As a King, romance was a luxury he had never cared to afford. His duty was to his bloodline. He needed a female whose wolf and body were strong enough to carry a Lycan heir without dying in the process. That was all that mattered.

Yet, as his amber eyes scanned the crowd, his mind didn't stay on the candidates.

His skin burned beneath his dark royal jacket. The mark on his neck throbbed with a slow, heavy pulse, pulling his attention helplessly toward the higher floors of the East Wing.

He knew Aria was up there, sitting by her window, looking down at the very women who were here to replace her. He hated how much his beast resisted the idea of any other female entering these walls. He hated that a girl he considered fragile had rooted herself so deeply into his instincts.

Valerius turned away from the window, his voice low and icy as he addressed the guards standing by the door.

"Prepare the arena," the King commanded flatly. "Let us see how many of these strong wolves survive the first test."

The air in the subterranean Vault Chamber was suffocating, thick with the acrid stench of burned ozone and dark, decaying magic.Valerius stood over the shattered pedestal, his jaw locked tight as his golden amber eyes swept over the scorched runes on the floor. Beside him, Lord Kaelen wiped sweat from his wrinkled brow, while Lady Seraphina stared at the empty space where the kingdom’s deadliest relic had rested moments ago."Nine layers of blood-bound wards," Valerius growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the stone floor. "Disabled without a single alarm going off. This was not an infiltration from the outside. It was a handed key.""The Eye of Malakor can corrupt an entire wolf core within days, Your Grace," Lady Seraphina warned softly, her dark eyes flashing with sharp concern. "Whoever took it does not just want to fight you. They want to tear the capital down from the inside.""Search every noble carriage leaving the grounds," Valerius commanded, tur

The scream echoed off the stone walls of the tower, sharp and laden with agonizing heat.Valerius moved before the sound could leave the room, his golden dragon wolf aura surging outward like a tidal wave to smother the sound waves and muffle the castle's warning wards. He slammed the heavy bolt into place and turned back toward the bed.Aria was writhing against the sheets, her skin flushed a feverish pink. Her hands clawed at her collar, gasping for air as her dual-ringed Eclipse eyes blazed in the dim light. It was a primal, undeniable heat. Because her core had been weak and dormant for years, she had never experienced her wolf's awakening cycle. The sudden flood of purifying power had violently triggered her first rut, and her body was demanding her mate.At first, Valerius held back, gripping the edge of the mattress as he fought his own roaring instincts. He did not want her first time to be a frantic blur driven purely by heat."Valerius," she whimpered, pouting as her hands t

The heavy oak door rattled against its iron hinges as the head of security stood breathless in the threshold.Valerius did not move away from Aria’s bed immediately. His thumb remained resting against the faint, warm pulse at her wrist, feeling the quiet hum of her hidden core beneath her skin. Slowly, he pulled his hand back and turned toward the doorway, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of amber."Say that again," Valerius commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling growl."The perimeter wards at the eastern city gate, Your Grace," Captain Vane stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The barrier didn't buckle from an attack. It dissolved from the inside out. The magical signature left on the gate mechanism was an inverted royal seal.""Lucien," Valerius muttered under his breath.A deep, suffocating tension seized Valerius’s chest. The royal passkeys were bound strictly to the bloodline and locked in the royal vault beneath the Council’s jurisdiction. Lucien c

The air in the grand courtyard was thick with the scent of ozone and copper. Beyond the heavy iron gates leading down to the subterranean trial grounds, a frantic crowd of royal guards and nervous Selection candidates had gathered. Rumors of dark magic leaking from the sealed depths had spread through the palace like wildfire, leaving everyone in a state of high tension. When the heavy iron doors ground open, silence fell over the yardKing Valerius stepped into the sunlight, his face a mask of cold granite. In his arms lay Aria, pale and unresponsive, her head resting against his chest.Royal physicians swarmed forward, their light-enchanted instruments glowing as they scanned her slumped form. Before the chief healer could speak to the crowd, Valerius leaned in, his voice dropping to a harsh, private whisper that only the physician could hear."Her core is shattered," Valerius commanded, his dark gold eyes locking onto the healer's in an implicit threat. "She is an unranked girl who

The moment the barrier swallowed her, the world turned deathly still.Aria hit the stone ground on her hands and knees, gasping for air. The sky above was invisible, replaced by high, cavernous stone arches dripping with dark moisture. The air did not smell like the rain-slicked pines outside the Citadel. It was heavy, thick, and suffocating, carrying a sharp, metallic stench that made her stomach churn. It smelled like old, dried blood, yet the pristine stone floors beneath her held no visible stain. She pushed herself up, her knees trembling as her bandaged hands gripped her tunic. At first, every breath felt like inhaling tiny fragments of ice, her lungs burning under the dense weight of the atmosphere. But as she stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs, the strange golden heat under her skin surged outward. Her breathing gradually evened out. She adjusted.Aria looked around in awe and terror. She was standing inside a vast, subterranean fortress. It was a royal bunker

In the subterranean security wing of the Citadel, the air was thick with tension. High-definition monitors lined the cold granite walls, flickered with live feeds from every corridor, courtyard, and perimeter fence.Valerius stood motionless behind the chief security officer. His broad hands gripped the leather back of the officer's chair, the steel framework groaning under his immense strength. His breathing was dangerously shallow, his jaw locked in a rigid, icy line.Deep within his chest, the tether that bound his wolf spirit to Aria’s collarbone mark had gone completely numb. It was not a faint pulse or a distant ache; it was a terrifying, hollow silence. If she were anywhere within these stone walls, my beast would feel her, Valerius thought, his amber eyes burning into the dark screens. She cannot be where I think she is. She wouldn't be that foolish."Check the southern boundary feeds," Valerius commanded, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent a shudder through the tec
