The thick stone walls of the East Wing did little to muffle the distant murmur of the arrival below.

Aria stood by her tall balcony doors, watching as servants in dark liveries guided dozens of candidates through the sprawling lower arcades. Below, highborn women chattered in hushed, competitive tones, their heels clicking sharply against the polished marble corridors as they were escorted to their assigned quarters.

A soft tap at the door made Aria turn. Rose, her young maid, stepped inside carrying a small brass key and a printed itinerary on heavy parchment.

"The Citadel stewards have finished allocating the guest suites, Miss Aria," Rose said softly, keeping her eyes respectfully lowered as she set the tray on the table. "They are placing the candidates two to a suite in the West Tower to keep order. The orientation gathering is set for this evening in the Great Gallery."

Aria looked down at the parchment. Printed in crisp black ink were the strict rules of the selection grounds: no unescorted wandering after dusk, no magical interference outside designated testing zones, and mandatory attendance at the preliminary briefings.

"Is His Majesty going to be there?" Aria asked, her voice quiet.

Rose shook her head. "No, Miss. The King does not oversee the logistics. Lord Vane and the High Council are handling all the arrangements. The King remains in the North Keep."

Aria felt a strange, conflicting knot tighten in her chest. Part of her was relieved she wouldn't have to face his icy, prideful glare, but her wolf let out a faint, restless whine beneath her ribs. The mark on her collarbone throbbed with a dull, persistent heat, constantly reminding her of the heavy male who had claimed her in the dark and then locked her away.

Across the courtyard in the West Tower, Mirabel dragged her leather trunk into a spacious, sunlit room overlooking the eastern gardens.

"Unpack the gowns first," Mirabel ordered her personal servant, tossing her handbag onto the velvet settee. She turned to inspect her assigned room, only to freeze when another female stepped out from the adjoining dressing area.

It was Lady Selene.

Selene had already claimed the larger bed near the window. She stood with absolute composure, unbuttoning her travel coat while her head maid neatly arranged rows of expensive potions and silk garments on the vanity. Her dark eyes swept over Mirabel with cool, unimpressed detachment.

Mirabel swallowed hard, forcing her posture straight. "I am Mirabel of the Crescent Crest Pack."

Selene didn't offer a hand. She simply adjusted a gold cuff on her wrist, her Alpha aura breathing out in a subtle, suffocating wave that made the air in the room instantly heavy.

"I know who you are," Selene said, her voice smooth and devoid of warmth. "You are the sister of the rejected girl the King marked in the garden."

Mirabel’s face flushed red. "Aria is my sister, but I am here on my own merit. The King called her an anomaly. The throne is still open."

Selene offered a cold, paper-thin smile, stepping past Mirabel toward the balcony. "The throne was never open to minor packs, Mirabel. The King does not care about romance, and he certainly does not care about weak bloodlines. He requires an heir that won't kill its mother. Enjoy your stay in the Citadel, but do not mistake your presence here for a chance at the crown."

Before Mirabel could snap back, a sharp chime echoed from the hallway speakers, announcing that all candidates were to gather in the Great Gallery for the preliminary briefing.

High in the North Keep, far removed from the noise of the arriving candidates, Valerius sat behind the heavy obsidian desk in his private study.

Files detailing the bloodlines, magical capacities, and physical records of every candidate lay stacked before him, but he hadn't touched them. His jaw was set in a tight, rigid line as he leaned back against his leather chair, his eyes fixed on the ceiling.

A knock sounded at the heavy double doors, and Lord Vane stepped inside, holding a leather-bound ledger.

"Sire," Vane said, bowing formally. "The candidates have all been processed and quartered. The preliminary briefing is under way in the gallery. We are set to begin the physical evaluations tomorrow morning."

Valerius didn't even glance at him. "Handle it."

Vane hesitated, shifting his weight. "You will not be gracing the opening orientation with your presence? The Alpha fathers are expecting—"

"I am not a spectacle for ambitious Alphas, Vane," Valerius growled, his amber eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous heat that made the councilor take a step back. "You and Sharon will conduct the trials. Bring me the results of those who survive the preliminary cut. Dismissed."

Vane bowed quickly and withdrew, shutting the heavy doors behind him.

Once the room was silent again, Valerius let out a harsh exhale, his fingers gripping the edge of his desk. He hated the circus filling his fortress. He hated the endless political maneuvers. But most of all, he hated the relentless, searing pulse on the side of his neck.

His beast was furious, pacing behind his ribs, snarling at the distance between him and the female in the East Tower.

Valerius closed his eyes, forcing his breath steady, refusing to yield to the wild impulse calling him to her room. He had a kingdom to secure, and he would not let a weak, mysterious girl unravel his pride.

The air in the subterranean Vault Chamber was suffocating, thick with the acrid stench of burned ozone and dark, decaying magic.Valerius stood over the shattered pedestal, his jaw locked tight as his golden amber eyes swept over the scorched runes on the floor. Beside him, Lord Kaelen wiped sweat from his wrinkled brow, while Lady Seraphina stared at the empty space where the kingdom’s deadliest relic had rested moments ago."Nine layers of blood-bound wards," Valerius growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated through the stone floor. "Disabled without a single alarm going off. This was not an infiltration from the outside. It was a handed key.""The Eye of Malakor can corrupt an entire wolf core within days, Your Grace," Lady Seraphina warned softly, her dark eyes flashing with sharp concern. "Whoever took it does not just want to fight you. They want to tear the capital down from the inside.""Search every noble carriage leaving the grounds," Valerius commanded, tur

The scream echoed off the stone walls of the tower, sharp and laden with agonizing heat.Valerius moved before the sound could leave the room, his golden dragon wolf aura surging outward like a tidal wave to smother the sound waves and muffle the castle's warning wards. He slammed the heavy bolt into place and turned back toward the bed.Aria was writhing against the sheets, her skin flushed a feverish pink. Her hands clawed at her collar, gasping for air as her dual-ringed Eclipse eyes blazed in the dim light. It was a primal, undeniable heat. Because her core had been weak and dormant for years, she had never experienced her wolf's awakening cycle. The sudden flood of purifying power had violently triggered her first rut, and her body was demanding her mate.At first, Valerius held back, gripping the edge of the mattress as he fought his own roaring instincts. He did not want her first time to be a frantic blur driven purely by heat."Valerius," she whimpered, pouting as her hands t

The heavy oak door rattled against its iron hinges as the head of security stood breathless in the threshold.Valerius did not move away from Aria’s bed immediately. His thumb remained resting against the faint, warm pulse at her wrist, feeling the quiet hum of her hidden core beneath her skin. Slowly, he pulled his hand back and turned toward the doorway, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of amber."Say that again," Valerius commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling growl."The perimeter wards at the eastern city gate, Your Grace," Captain Vane stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The barrier didn't buckle from an attack. It dissolved from the inside out. The magical signature left on the gate mechanism was an inverted royal seal.""Lucien," Valerius muttered under his breath.A deep, suffocating tension seized Valerius’s chest. The royal passkeys were bound strictly to the bloodline and locked in the royal vault beneath the Council’s jurisdiction. Lucien c

The air in the grand courtyard was thick with the scent of ozone and copper. Beyond the heavy iron gates leading down to the subterranean trial grounds, a frantic crowd of royal guards and nervous Selection candidates had gathered. Rumors of dark magic leaking from the sealed depths had spread through the palace like wildfire, leaving everyone in a state of high tension. When the heavy iron doors ground open, silence fell over the yardKing Valerius stepped into the sunlight, his face a mask of cold granite. In his arms lay Aria, pale and unresponsive, her head resting against his chest.Royal physicians swarmed forward, their light-enchanted instruments glowing as they scanned her slumped form. Before the chief healer could speak to the crowd, Valerius leaned in, his voice dropping to a harsh, private whisper that only the physician could hear."Her core is shattered," Valerius commanded, his dark gold eyes locking onto the healer's in an implicit threat. "She is an unranked girl who

The moment the barrier swallowed her, the world turned deathly still.Aria hit the stone ground on her hands and knees, gasping for air. The sky above was invisible, replaced by high, cavernous stone arches dripping with dark moisture. The air did not smell like the rain-slicked pines outside the Citadel. It was heavy, thick, and suffocating, carrying a sharp, metallic stench that made her stomach churn. It smelled like old, dried blood, yet the pristine stone floors beneath her held no visible stain. She pushed herself up, her knees trembling as her bandaged hands gripped her tunic. At first, every breath felt like inhaling tiny fragments of ice, her lungs burning under the dense weight of the atmosphere. But as she stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs, the strange golden heat under her skin surged outward. Her breathing gradually evened out. She adjusted.Aria looked around in awe and terror. She was standing inside a vast, subterranean fortress. It was a royal bunker

In the subterranean security wing of the Citadel, the air was thick with tension. High-definition monitors lined the cold granite walls, flickered with live feeds from every corridor, courtyard, and perimeter fence.Valerius stood motionless behind the chief security officer. His broad hands gripped the leather back of the officer's chair, the steel framework groaning under his immense strength. His breathing was dangerously shallow, his jaw locked in a rigid, icy line.Deep within his chest, the tether that bound his wolf spirit to Aria’s collarbone mark had gone completely numb. It was not a faint pulse or a distant ache; it was a terrifying, hollow silence. If she were anywhere within these stone walls, my beast would feel her, Valerius thought, his amber eyes burning into the dark screens. She cannot be where I think she is. She wouldn't be that foolish."Check the southern boundary feeds," Valerius commanded, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent a shudder through the tec
