Bright sky. The sounds of children playing around the pack house.

I smiled, the gentle breeze fluttering through my hair.

Today was going to be perfect.

“Luna, the chefs have made the sample for today's dinner,” Diana, the head chef, informed me.

I stood from my balcony seat. “Alright. Let us go.”

From the top of the stairs, I could hear the bustling downstairs.

“Good morning, Luna,” the maids and chefs chorused as I entered the kitchen.

“Good morning. These look wonderful,” I said, gesturing to the two long tables filled with dessert. “You made sure the cookies were–”

“Vanilla flavoured. As little sugar as possible,” Diana and two other chefs chorused. “Just like Alpha likes.”

I flushed, trying to figure out the number of times I had said those words that they would know them by heart. “G-Good to know.”

Reaching for the nearest cupcake, I took a bite, moaning as it melted in my mouth.

“This is amazing.”

“Would Alpha like it?” one of the maids asked.

Another one slapped her arm. “Of course he would. No one knows him better than Luna Elara.”

“I hope so,” I muttered.

Maybe I would finally tell him how I feel after all these years.

“I trust your judgment on the rest,” I said, setting down the rest of the cupcake. “I have other things to attend to.”

I was barely out of the kitchen before the decorators were whisking me away to the ballroom.

It was hours later that I was able to get away.

I hid behind the pack house to catch my breath.

“What are you doing?”

My feet rooted to the ground.

Oh no. I looked like a hot mess.

I turned my head, a nervous smile on my lips. “Asher, I did not see you there.”

He was leaning against the wall with an amused smirk on his face. “Why do you look like you just ran a marathon?”

My head slacked against the wall. “If someone helped me with the last-minute checks, I would not look like this.”

“Oh, come on. You know I was busy. I was looking for you so we could go put on our outfits.”

Yeah, he was an alpha.

He did not have the time for small errands.

“Sorry. I should not have said that,” I apologized.

Asher stepped closer to me and grabbed my hand, leading me inside the house.

Instantly, my heart started to pound.

Sure, we were married, but for most of our years together, we had just been friends who slept together.

“Asher, our fifth anniversary is coming up in a few weeks,” I said.

He glanced down at me. “Yeah. Why?”

“I was wondering if you had anywhere in mind to go.”

Asher hummed, brushing the back of my hand with his thumb. “Not really. I'm fine with anywhere you pick.”

My eyes fell. “Oh. Did you get me something already?”

His face lit up with a beautiful grin. “That is a secret, Elara.”

My meeting Asher was a stroke of luck.

His proposing to me was a full-blown miracle.

What Alpha in his right mind would think that an orphan juggling jobs just to stay alive would be a good match for him?

“I do not know if I have said this before but I'm glad my college scholarship was revoked.”

Asher had a weird look on his face. “Why in goddess’ name would you be glad about that?”

“Because if I had that scholarship, I would not have applied for the cleaning job at the company and we would not have met.”

He chuckled. “That is one way to think about things…but I guess that is true.”

Asher was from a long line of strong Alphas and I was a wandering wolf, trying to fit in amongst humans.

We were from two different worlds.

At the doors to the twin dressing rooms, Asher let go of my hand.

“Try to be down before the food gets cold,” he teased.

I sighed dramatically. “I'll try.”

Asher entered his dressing room first.

I swung open my door. “You little eavesdropping rats.”

Tracy sat on the floor, rubbing her forehead. “You two are just so cute together. When do you plan on telling him?”

I started to strip for a quick shower. “At the party…I think. I don't want it to be weird between us after.”

Her nose scrunched up. “Why would it be weird?”

“What if he does not return my feelings?”

“What is the worst that could happen? You are married,” she stressed. “But forget all that now. We do not have time.”

She all but shoved me in the shower.

“Let's make you so beautiful that he cannot resist you tonight.”

*Two hours later*

“This is not the dress I remember trying on,” I said, twirling in front of the mirror.

What I had decided on was a green dress. This was gold.

Tracy adjusted the flowers on the hem of my dress. “It does not matter, does it? You barely care about what you wear.”

“But Asher's tie–”

“It is gold as well, Luna.” She stood and held my shoulders. “Luna, we got you. Go get your man.”

I trailed my fingers down the corset, feeling how firm the fabric hugged my waist.

It was a really beautiful dress. I wondered if Asher would think the same.

There was a knock on the door.

“Luna, it is almost time for the first dance,” a guard said from outside.

I took in a deep breath and walked to the door, heading straight for the double doors at the end of the hall.

Asher must be down there already.

“Now announcing, Luna Elara Blackwood,” the guard outside the door said before opening the doors to the ballroom.

I stepped into the room, scanning the crowd until my eyes found Asher's.

There was a small smile on his face as he watched me come down the stairs.

Right on the last one, I tripped and fell into his arms.

This is it. I should tell him now.

“Asher, I want to tell you–”

The main doors burst open, interrupting what I was about to say.

All eyes turned to the woman who stepped through the doors.

All eyes, including Asher's.

  • Claiming The Alpha   Chapter 150

Elara’s POVKaden and I were sent a sanction before daybreak the next morning. It was needless to say that the council was not very happy with the stunt Kaden pulled during the ceremony. We were barely done reading their very long, angry letter when one of the patrol guards knocked on the door with another. “This is from Councilman Donatello’s wife.”Kaden’s eyes narrowed sharply at the small wrapped box. “Are you sure that I should not kill him?”I took it from the guard. “Donatello might be a creep. His wife? Not so much.”If anything, she was one of the sweetest women I had ever had the honour of meeting. Too bad she was sold by her father to be a wife to that pervert. When the door shut, I set the box on the table and started to slowly unwrap it. The wrapping was barely out when a medallion fell from inside.I lifted the chain, studying the engraving on the body. Fire.“Is there a note?” Kaden asked as he took it from me.I searched the rest of the box. “Nothing…there is something

Elara’s POVKaden was grinning so wide that I was suffering from second-hand embarrassment.“Stop it,” I hissed from the corner of my lips. “Everyone is staring.”“Luna Caelthorn, congratulations!” one of the guests said as he entered the hall. “...Alpha Caelthorn, you look well.”Kaden barely paid attention to the man, his eyes glossy.I smiled at the guest until he walked away before I turned a pointed glare on Kaden. “We are hosting today. Can you try not to have your head in the clouds?”“You said that you loved me, right?” he teased and my cheeks flamed again.“Childish,” I muttered, walking back to the packhouse to find Cain.I was met with panicked yelling. Donna was hunched over, her hand pressed against her chest. Farah stood beside her.“Breathe in,” Farah said and Donna sucked in a sharp breath and held it.“Out.”Donna blinked rapidly, tears pooling in her eyes. Farah tilted her head up. “If you cry now, you will ruin your makeup.”“What if someone out there knows me? I us

Elara's POVI slapped Kaden's wandering hands from my body.“Don't you dare touch me,” I snapped and then winced when pain shot up my back again.Goddess. What had I been thinking, letting Kaden into my ass?“Do you want me to kiss it better?” he teased. My face fell. “That isn't a joke.”His eyes widened. “Sorry…does it hurt that much?”As we were speaking, my body was doing what it did best: repairing itself.I slapped his chest. “Go make yourself useful. Make me a sandwich or something.”Kaden kissed my forehead before leaving the room. When the soreness faded, I let out a relieved sigh, trying to get out of bed.“No. No,” Kaden said, entering the room while balancing a tray precariously on his palm.On it was a very modest breakfast: cereal, a sandwich, some quickly made eggs but breakfast nonetheless.“Breakfast in bed?” I said, sitting up.He grinned. “It's the least you deserve.” His lips pressed to the side of my forehead. As I ate my breakfast, Kaden ran a bath. I had just sw

Kaden’s POVI was fine with Silver’s big mouth until he started talking to Elara. As it turned out, there was a lot in the field of elemental theory that I did not realize could make for an interesting two-hour conversation.Elara had not even glanced at me once in the last thirty minutes.“They always say fire and water complement each other so I was thinking,” Silver said. “If your fire met my water, it would produce steam, right?”“Well, yes, if I control the temperature of the fire well enough.”“Who would be able to control the resulting steam? You or me?”Elara blinked. “Steam is just evaporated water particles.”“But what about the heat? The only reason it still exists in steam is that the temperature is hot, right? If you separated the heated particles, it would turn right back to water.”“Ah…that is a good question.”As her eyes shone brighter, my irritation only seemed to climb.Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew the truth. She did not see him as any more than an acqu

Elara’s POVEven with an injured leg dragging behind him, Silver still found a way to smile.“Donna!” he exclaimed, trying to run to hug her.Along the way, he tripped, fell on his face and then, continued running. Donna’s face was a mixture of alarmed and concerned as he pulled her into a hug.“What the hell?” she mouthed to me.Silver leaned back, a wide grin on his face. “I’m your uncle Silver.”“I dont’ have an uncle Silver,” she said slowly.Water swirled around his body, coming to float above their heads. Donna’s eyes narrowed sharply. “Uncle from his side,” she said curtly.A dramatic frown slipped onto his face. “You’re mad. I’m sorry that I have not come to visit all this while. I have been looking for you all.”Donna pointed to herself. “I’m twenty-six. He left when I was fourteen. You…I have not seen you my entire life.”“Benjamin is an idiot. He did not tell me that he had a family.”“He is your brother!”“Estranged,” Silver corrected. “And he is old enough to be my dad. I

Elara’s POVDonna hovered around me, her face covered in concern. “I am so sorry. Let me see.”I waved her away and snapped my dislocated nose back into place. “I’m fine. It will heal in a second.”But more importantly…“What was that?” I asked her. “How was the water hard enough to dislocate my nose?”Donna watched my nose in horror as the swelling disappeared, replaced by a soft redness. “I don’t know what that was. It felt like I blanked there for a second.”Donna was an elemental. But her mother said that her father was an elemental as well. That would mean the gene ran in all members of the family and not just one gender like my flame. Was it in exchange for their wolves becoming dormant?Cain dropped to the ground in front of me. “What is going on, Elara?”“I am not quite sure either…Donna, do you remember if anything like this happened in my childhood?”She played with her hair. “I can barely remember anything from before I was ten.”Ten years old? That was not normal. Her mem

Elara’s POVMy words settled heavily in the room.Seconds passed in silence, the hum of the air conditioner almost echoing off the mostly bare walls.Hilda pressed her palms flat on her knees. “Yes, Luna. Elara’s POV“I wonder if it would kill him to be polite,” I muttered in annoyance as I checked to see if the card had left a scar.“Not so loud, Luna,” she whispered over the phone.Cain had been so nice to lend me one of his spares.
