50. VALIANT

“Hey,” I said softly.

Daisy’s eyes darted up to me and immediately darted away again. “Hi.”

I hesitated in the doorway, waiting for her to invite me in, but she didn’t. There was an awkwardness between us that hasn’t been there before and it was driving me crazy.

“Can I come in?”

Daisy nodded.

My eyes darted around the room as I entered.

Her clothes were scattered around one side of the bed and on the other side it was folded neatly where she sat, busy sorting through it. Was she planning on leaving?

My heart squeezed painfully in my chest but I ignored the pain and took a seat on the edge of the bed.

“Daisy, we need to talk.”

She paused for a few seconds and then finished folding the shirt and placing it on the pile of other neatly folded shirts before she raised her head to look at me.

Instead of saying a word, I showed her.

“John’s men trashed the apartment when they came looking for you. I found it on the floor in the nest.”

Daisy swallowed loudly. “Does Alex know?”

“No.”
