The Alpha’s Keep

The journey to Blackthorn Keep was silent.

Clover rode beside Kael through the moonlit forest, wrapped in a thick cloak one of the wolves had offered her. No one spoke. The only sounds were the steady rhythm of hooves and the distant calls of night creatures hidden among the trees.

Her mind refused to rest.

Magic.

Hunters.

Witches.

Werewolves.

And Grandma…

She blinked back fresh tears.

If Agnes was alive, Clover would find her.

If she wasn’t…

Clover clenched the silver clover pendant around her neck until it pressed into her palm.

She would find out who was responsible.

No matter the cost.

As dawn painted the sky in shades of gold and lavender, the forest opened onto a breathtaking sight.

Blackthorn Keep.

The fortress stood atop a mountain carved from black stone, its towering walls wrapped in climbing ivy. Massive gates of iron guarded the entrance, while banners bearing the emblem of a silver wolf fluttered in the morning breeze.

It looked less like a castle…

And more like a kingdom.

The gates creaked open.

Warriors bowed their heads as Kael rode through.

“Welcome home, Alpha.”

Kael acknowledged them with a nod.

When their eyes shifted to Clover, whispers spread through the courtyard.

“Who’s she?”

“A human?”

“No…”

“I smell magic.”

“The Alpha brought a witch?”

Clover lowered her gaze.

She had never felt so out of place.

Inside the keep, Kael led her through long stone corridors warmed by crackling fireplaces. The walls were decorated with ancient paintings of wolves beneath full moons, each one older than the last.

“This place is beautiful,” Clover admitted quietly.

Kael glanced at her.

“My mother designed most of it.”

“You speak about her in the past.”

“I do.”

“I’m sorry.”

He looked away.

“So am I.”

It was the first time Clover had seen something other than authority in his eyes.

For a brief moment…

She saw grief.

A cheerful voice suddenly echoed through the hall.

“So she’s the famous girl.”

A young woman hurried toward them, her chestnut curls bouncing with every step. She couldn’t have been much older than Clover.

She smiled brightly.

“I’m Lila.”

Without waiting for permission, she hugged Clover.

Clover stiffened in surprise.

Lila laughed.

“Relax. If the Alpha brought you here, no one gets to hurt you.”

Kael cleared his throat.

“Lila.”

“What?”

“You’re overwhelming her.”

“I know.”

She grinned.

“But she looks like she needs a friend.”

For the first time since everything changed…

Clover smiled.

It was small.

Brief.

But real.

Kael noticed.

And, to his surprise…

He found himself smiling too.

Later that evening, Clover stood alone on a balcony overlooking the endless forest below.

The wind carried the scent of rain.

Footsteps approached behind her.

“You should be resting.”

She turned.

Kael.

“I couldn’t sleep.”

“Neither could I.”

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Then Clover asked the question she had been holding onto since the forest.

“Why did you really save me?”

Kael remained silent.

His wolf growled inside him, urging him to tell her the truth.

Mate.

He ignored it.

“Because,” he finally said, “I don’t believe you’re the monster everyone thinks you are.”

Clover looked down at her glowing wrist.

“What if they’re right?”

Kael stepped beside her.

“The strongest people I’ve ever known feared becoming monsters.”

He looked out toward the moon.

“The real monsters never ask the question.”

Clover felt something shift inside her.

For the first time since her world had fallen apart…

She didn’t feel completely alone.

Far below the castle…

Hidden among the trees…

A hooded figure watched the balcony through a crystal sphere.

“The Alpha grows attached,” the figure whispered.

A raven landed on the stranger’s shoulder.

The figure smiled coldly.

“Good.”

“It will make breaking him so much easier.”

The raven took flight.

Clutched in its claws was a sealed message.

Its destination—

The High Coven.

And the woman who had been waiting twenty-two years for Clover to reveal herself.
