Chapter 1

Maya’s POV

“There goes our future Luna,” Loretta teased, nudging me with her elbow as we stepped out of class.

“Keep your voice down,” I whispered, my cheeks turning red. “They’ll hear you.”

“So let them hear. You're dating Sebastian BlackWood, heir to the Blood Moon Pack. That smile should be insured.” She chuckled.

I laughed even though I was trying not to float.

For the first time in my life, I was more than just Maya, the pack's charity case. I was the top student at Blood Moon University. I had a full academic scholarship and Sebastian, the boy everyone wanted but who somehow wanted me, held my hand in public and whispered that he loved me to the moon and back.

He used to say things like, “You're not just my mate, Maya. You're my peace.” and I believed him.

I was so stupid.

****

Loretta left early so I remained in school till late afternoon.

After class, I picked up Fish Palokas and some sauce from Sebastian's favourite restaurant and headed to the front door of the three bedroom apartment I shared with Sebastian and my best friend, Loretta.

I checked my watch. Sebastian wouldn't be home until late so I decided to surprise him since he had been stressed with midterms. Loretta was rarely home. Always out partying somewhere on campus or sleeping over at a new boyfriend's place. Loretta was wild and had a flair for fashion and makeup while I was the more quiet type with interest in books. We'd been friends since highschool ever since the day she saved me from my bullies. And despite our different backgrounds, we'd been inseparable ever since

I tucked the tray in one arm and fished for my keys in my purse. I put the key in the lock and it unlocked easily. That's odd. The door had already been opened. Was anyone home?

I pushed the door open and entered. I was about to make my way to the kitchen when a sudden noise from upstairs made me halt in my steps.

Was someone else in the house? Sebastian wasn't supposed to return till evening and Loretta rarely stayed home so who the hell was in the house? Instincts took over and I reached for an old baseball bat leaning against the wall. Having the thing around made me feel safe. Heaven forbid a girl to keep a weapon around to defend herself.

Taking a deep breath to steady my rapid heartbeat, I crept up the stairs one step at a time.

When I reached the landing, I shut my eyes and whispered. “Please, be Loretta. Please, be Loretta.”

I stepped out into the hallway. The hallway led into one direction, three bedrooms and one shared bathroom. Two doors were locked while one was ajar. The one that led to Loretta's.

Just then, I heard Loretta's giggle and a very deep moan. A sigh escaped me when I realized it wasn't a burglar just that Loretta had brought another guy home. We'd talked about this but what Loretta wants, Loretta gets, and that happens when no one's home.

I was about to leave when I heard the voice of the man Loretta was with : “Your pussy is so tight for me.”

My heart sank. “No. It couldn't be.”

“Yes…” Loretta's moans echoed from inside. “Right there.”

“You taste so much better than Maya,” Sebastian's voice growled in reply.

I braced myself for what I might see, my hands trembling as I lifted them to the door knob. I finally pushed it open. The sight before me hit me like a bolt from the blue, causing me to step back.

There in the middle of the room was a naked Loretta lying flat on her back while Sebastian rode her.

This had to be a dream, right? I pinched myself only to feel the sting afterwards.

This wasn't a dream. It was real. As real as it could get.

But how? How could Loretta do this after everything we'd been through? After we swore never to let our future children grow up in a toxic environment after catching her mother with his pants down several times. After we both promised to love and care for each other like the family we were after her parents got a divorce. We'd grown up like sisters for heaven's sakes.

None if it made any sense to me.

Sebastian hated Loretta. He always called her a bad influence and had told me several times to stay away from the likes of her. And she, on the other hand, couldn't stand him. They hated each other. If they were supposed to then why was I watching them kiss and fuck each other like they're the ones mated to each other and not me and Sebastian?

We'd been living under the same roof since sophomore year so how long has this been going on behind my back? Months? Weeks?

Their moans got louder and I couldn't pretend like I hadn't seen anything.

I straightened my spine and pushed the door open. “When are you two going to finish up?”

Loretta pushed Sebastian off her body, scrambling for the bed sheet to cover whatever dignity she bought she had left.

“Oh, Maya,” her voice wobbled. “I didn't know you'd be home by this hour. You're always in class.”

“Don't try to convince her. There's no point.” Sebastian said regarding me like I was a cockroach he'd stepped on.

“What?” The baseball slipped from my grip and crashed to the floor.

“What does it look like?” Maya smirked. “Extra credit?”

My throat tightened as I stared at Sebastian, the man I loved. The man I gave everything to.

“Why would you do this to me?” I whispered. “You said I was your mate.”

Sebastian stood up, naked and unashamed. “Well, I changed my mind. You were a fun toy. Don't get ahead of yourself.”

Tears filled my eyes but I blinked them away. “A fun toy?”

“Oh please, save me the tears, Maya,” Loretta laughed this time. “Did you actually think anyone in their right mind would love an orphan Omega like you?”

I felt like I was drowning in the middle of an ocean.

Sebastian moved closer, his grin cruel. “Let me spell it for you, Maya. I was never going to marry you. You were a bet. The guys thought I couldn't get the little charity case to fall in love with me,” he shrugged. “I won. You were nothing more than a plaything.”

My lips parted but no words came out. I had barely recovered before he felt the final blow.

“I, Sebastian BlackWood of the Blood Moon Pack,” he said with a smirk. “Hereby reject you, Maya Sinclair, as my mate.”

The pain of the bond snapping hit me like a whip to my soul. It stole the breath from my lungs and left me heaving for air.

“And guess what?” Sebastian added, still smirking. “I'll mark Loretta tonight and make her my future Luna soon.”

I stumbled backward, tears flowing down my face.

“Run, Maya.” He laughed.

And I did.

I ran and didn't stop till the sun dipped below the hill.

The hour that followed was hell.

The school dean, Loretta's father, summoned me to his office.

“I'd been reviewing your scholarship file,” he began coldly ignoring my warm pleasantries. “It seems… questionable.”

“You gave me the scholarship yourself,” My heart skipped. “You helped me, dad…”

“Don't call me that!” He snapped. Dean Roman never snapped at me. He never told me to not call him “Dad.” What was going on?

“Pack your things, Maya,” he rushed back to his chair. “You're no longer welcome at Blood Moon.”

I gasped. “Please …”

“You should've thought of that before opening your legs for my daughter's mate.”

Those words hit harder than a slap.

“See yourself out.”

I rose to my feet and walked away the same way I did the first time I came into Blood Moon University, like nobody.

How—did I find you?” He cut me off, crossing the distance between us. “Let’s just say… I felt this inexplicable pull. There was no mistaking it. This is the connection I've been searching for.” I froze as he reached for my hair. “What?”“Looks like fate had other plans, huh? Who would've thought you'd be my mate?” He grinned. I swallowed hard. “No. That's impossible.”“But it isn't,” he smiled. “I felt the bond, and I know you do too.”All of a sudden, I felt an inexplicable tug in my chest and nearly gasped. No, the Moon Goddess couldn't be this cruel.“Miss Sinclair,” he said, stepping closer. “I have a contract for you.”I stared at the white paper emblazoned with the Blood Moon crest and stiffened. Before I could respond, he grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the bar.“Where are we going?” I aske

Chapter 2Maya’s POVSix months later,“Table 3 wants 2 beers and a whiskey, no ice!” My manager barked.I gave her a dull nod and grabbed the bottles off the shelf. My back ached, and my eyes were red from lack of sleep. I had pulled 3 night shifts this week just to afford rent on a room I shared with two strangers. This wasn't the life I'd dreamed of, but dreams, as we know, don't matter when you're broken, alone, and trying not to fall apart.I slid the drinks onto a tray and weaved through the crowd, dodging drunk hands and fake smiles. The bar reeked of sweat and desperation. I hated every minute of being here, but I needed the job. No one asks where the scholarship girl went. No one even remembered the top student who was once promised Luna's crown by the Alpha's heir. No one remembered me, Maya Sinclair, except maybe Alora. My phone buzzed in my apron, and I whipped it out.Alora: “What's up? Thought you'd like to see this. Chapter 4Maya’s POVI woke up to silence and tangled silk sheets that didn't belong to me. My eyes snapped open when I felt the warm, solid body beside me. I was too woozy to remember who that body belonged to. But the moment I leaned back, his scent, Arabian Oud, and a sweet taste of fire hit my nostrils. My eyes went wild. Oh. Oh, shit. I turned around, and the air nearly got knocked out of my lungs. The crushing weight of realization hit me when I noticed something was wrong.I was naked in bed with Alpha Dante.I sat up slowly, still reveling in the shock, when the sheets slipped down my chest, exposing a trail of bite marks and bruised kisses.Flashbacks flickered through my mind, and I gasped. His lips on my throat, his hand gripping my hip, and the sound of his growl as he pushed into me.My heart thundered in my chest. What the heck had I done? Guilt sliced through me like a blade, and I carefully slid out of bed. I gathered my clothes from the floor and slipped them on
