Maiko is written as Mai "舞" meaning dance and child "子. Her name is derivative from the archangel Michael. Chiemi means 千恵美 "thousand", "blessing", "beauty". Their surname Higurashi 日暮 means "day" and "evening". It is a way of saying that the twins are as different from Night and Day.
