DANGEROUS WHISPERS

My back hit the edge of the marble island before I even realized I’d moved. Alexander stopped just inches away, towering over me, his bare chest rising and falling like he was fighting for control. The air between us felt thick, electric. One wrong breath and everything would spark.

“Elara,” he said again, my name rolling off his tongue like a warning and a prayer at the same time. “You shouldn’t be down here. Not like this.”

I clutched the edge of the counter behind me, my silk nightdress suddenly feeling far too short, too thin. “I was just getting water. I didn’t think anyone would be awake.”

His gray eyes darkened as they dropped slowly down my body and back up. “Yet here you are. Looking like every man’s worst temptation.” He reached past me, his arm brushing my waist, and grabbed a glass from the cabinet. The faint contact made my skin ignite. He filled it with cold water and pressed it into my hands.

“Drink.”

I obeyed without thinking, the cool liquid doing nothing to calm the heat flooding my cheeks. “Thank you… Daddy.”

A muscle ticked in his jaw. He braced one hand on the island beside me, caging me in without fully touching. “You keep saying that word like you have no idea what it does to me.”

My heart slammed against my ribs. “I’m just trying to do what Mom wants. What you suggested. Family, right?”

He let out a low, rough chuckle that sent shivers racing down my spine. “Family,” he repeated, tasting the word. “That’s what this is supposed to be. But the second you walked into my house tonight, Elara, I knew this was going to be a problem.”

I set the glass down, forcing myself to meet his gaze. “A problem? Because I’m not some polished little trophy like the women you’re probably used to?”

His free hand came up, fingers hovering near my cheek before he caught himself and curled them into a fist. “No. Because you’re too young. Too innocent. And far too fucking beautiful for a man like me to ignore.” His voice dropped to a gravelly whisper. “I’ve built an empire by taking what I want, little girl. But this… this I can’t have.”

The raw honesty in his tone made my stomach flip. I should have pushed past him. Run upstairs. Instead, I whispered, “Then why are you standing so close?”

Alexander’s eyes flashed. For a second, I thought he might kiss me right there. His head dipped slightly, breath warm against my forehead. “Because I’m not as strong as I thought I was. And you keep calling me Daddy like you were made to say it.”

Silence stretched between us, heavy with things we couldn’t say. Somewhere upstairs, a clock chimed softly two in the morning.

“I should go back to bed,” I said, but my feet wouldn’t move.

“You should.” He didn’t step back. “Tell me something first. When you look at me, what do you see?”

I swallowed hard. “I see a man who could ruin my mother’s life if this goes wrong. I see someone powerful. Dangerous.” My voice trembled. “And I see the way you look at me like I’m already yours.”

His nostrils flared. “Smart girl.” One finger finally brushed my jaw, just a ghost of a touch, tilting my face up. “You’re right to be scared. Because if I let myself touch you the way I want to right now…”

Footsteps echoed faintly from the upper hallway.

We both froze.

“Alexander?” Mom’s sleepy voice called from the top of the stairs. “Are you down there? I woke up and you weren’t in bed.”

His hand dropped instantly. He stepped back so fast it was like I’d burned him, putting several feet between us. The loss of his heat left me strangely cold.

“Go,” he mouthed, eyes intense.

I grabbed my glass and slipped toward the side hallway that led to the back stairs, heart in my throat. I heard him answer Mom smoothly, voice perfectly composed. “Just getting a drink, darling. The wedding stress is getting to me. Go back to bed. I’ll be up soon.”

I didn’t wait to hear more. I crept upstairs the long way, legs shaky, and didn’t stop until I was back in my room with the door locked. I leaned against it, pressing my forehead to the cool wood.

This was insane. He was marrying my mother tomorrow. In less than twenty-four hours, this man would officially be my stepfather. I couldn’t want him. I shouldn’t want him.

But the way he’d looked at me… the way his voice had roughened when I called him Daddy…

I climbed into bed, pulling the covers up to my chin. Sleep still refused to come. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his bare chest, felt that almost touch on my jaw.

The mansion was quiet again, but my thoughts were loud.

Tomorrow was the wedding. I would smile, take photos, and call him Daddy in front of everyone. I would pretend none of this happened.

But deep down, I already knew the lie would taste like ash.

******

Morning light filtered through the curtains far too soon. I dragged myself downstairs for breakfast, dressed in a simple sundress, trying to look normal. Mom was a whirlwind of excitement, showing me flower arrangements and talking nonstop about her dress.

Alexander sat at the head of the table in a crisp white shirt, looking every bit the composed billionaire. When I walked in, our eyes met across the room.

“Good morning, Elara,” he said calmly, but there was heat behind the words. “Sleep well?”

“Not really,” I answered, taking my seat. “Kept having strange dreams.”

Mom laughed. “Wedding nerves! You’ll be fine, baby. Alexander, tell her how beautiful she’ll look in her bridesmaid dress.”

He smiled, but his gaze stayed locked on me. “I have no doubt she’ll be the most stunning woman there.” Under the table, his shoe brushed deliberately against my ankle. “After you, of course, my love.”

I nearly dropped my fork.

As Mom turned to answer a call from the planner, Alexander leaned forward slightly, voice low enough for only me to hear.

“About last night…” His eyes held a dangerous promise. “We need to talk. Alone. Before the ceremony.”

My pulse spiked. Before I could respond, Mom hung up and clapped her hands. “The makeup team will be here in an hour! This is going to be perfect.”

Perfect.

Right.

But as Alexander’s foot traced slowly up my calf under the table, disappearing just as Mom looked back, I realized one terrifying truth.

Nothing about today was going to be perfect.

Shadows Between WordsThe library door swung open, and I yanked my hand out of Alexander’s like it was on fire. My heart shot into my throat as one of the night staff a middle aged man named Thomas stepped inside carrying a small tray.“Apologies, sir,” Thomas said, blinking at the dim lighting. “I saw the lamps still on and thought you might want a fresh pot of herbal tea before bed. Mrs. Voss mentioned you sometimes”“It’s fine, Thomas,” Alexander cut in smoothly, already standing. His voice held that natural authority that made people listen. “We were just finishing up. Leave it on the side table.”Thomas nodded, set the tray down, and glanced curiously at me before backing out. “Goodnight, sir. Miss Elara.”The door clicked shut again. I let out a long, shaky breath and pressed my palms to my burning cheeks.“That was too close,” I whispered. “If it had been Mom…”Alexander stayed standing, running a hand through his hair. “But it wasn’t. Sit back down, Elara. We’re not done.”I s

I stared at Alexander’s last message until the screen went dark. Door’s unlocked. The words burned behind my eyelids. I tossed my phone onto the nightstand and pulled the covers over my head, but sleep was impossible. Every creak in the old mansion made me wonder if it was him in the hallway. Every heartbeat reminded me how close we’d come in the library. After twenty restless minutes, I slipped out of bed, threw on a light robe over my silk nightdress, and padded downstairs barefoot. The house felt different at night bigger, more dangerous. I headed to the library, telling myself it was just to read, to distract my racing mind. Not because I hoped he’d find me there. The door was already ajar, a soft golden glow spilling into the hallway.I pushed it open slowly. Alexander stood by the tall windows, a glass of whiskey in his hand, staring out at the dark gardens. He’d changed into a black t-shirt and gray sweatpants. The casual look made him seem more human. And somehow more intimida

Echoes in the LibraryDinner that evening felt like walking through a minefield of polite smiles and hidden landmines. Mom had returned from her spa day glowing, full of stories about her friends’ jealous reactions to her new life. I sat between them at the long table, pushing pasta around my plate while trying not to notice how Alexander’s gaze kept finding me.“So tell me, Elara,” Mom said, twirling her wine glass, “what do you think of the house so far? Alexander gave you the grand tour, right?”I nodded, keeping my eyes on my food. “It’s incredible. The library especially. I could get lost in there for days.”Alexander’s low voice cut in smoothly. “She seemed to like it. Spent quite a bit of time at the piano too.” He took a sip of wine, his expression unreadable. “You play, Elara?”“Not really,” I lied, remembering how close we’d sat on that bench. “Just curious.”Mom clapped her hands. “You two bonding already makes me so happy. Alexander, you should take her shopping tomorrow.

Breakfast and BoundariesSunlight poured through the tall windows of the dining room the next morning, making everything look deceptively peaceful. I’d barely slept, tossing and turning with Alexander’s texts burning a hole in my phone. I’d saved the number. I hated myself for it.Mom was already at the table, looking blissfully happy in a silk robe, sipping coffee. Alexander sat at the head like he owned the world which he did. Freshly showered, in a charcoal shirt with the sleeves rolled up, reading something on his tablet.“Good morning, sleepyhead!” Mom said brightly when I walked in. “Come sit. Maria made French toast just the way you like it.”I forced a smile and took the seat across from Alexander, not beside him. “Morning, Mom. You look… rested.”She laughed, reaching over to squeeze my hand. “Best sleep I’ve had in years. Right, darling?”Alexander looked up, his gray eyes finding mine immediately. “Absolutely. Though I think the jet lag from yesterday is still hitting some

  • DADDY’S PLEASURE    LINES WE SHOULDN’T CROSS

The heavy door clicked shut behind me, sealing us inside Alexander’s office. The room smelled like him sandalwood, aged whiskey, and polished leather. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined one wall, while a massive mahogany desk dominated the center. Moonlight filtered through the tall windows, casting long shadows across the floor. I rubbed my arms, suddenly cold despite the warmth of the room. “This is a bad idea. Mom could come looking for us any minute.” Alexander leaned against the desk, arms crossed over his chest. His bow tie was gone, the top buttons of his white shirt undone. He looked dangerously relaxed for a man who had just married my mother hours ago. “She’s exhausted and already upstairs changing,” he said calmly. “The staff is handling the last guests. We have time.” His gray eyes pinned me in place. “You ran from the reception like you were being chased. Talk to me, Elara. No more polite smiles and careful words.” I let out a shaky breath and paced a few steps. “What

Vows and Velvet LiesThe garden had transformed into a fairytale of white roses and golden chairs. Soft music floated through the air as guests in designer outfits took their seats. I stood at the edge of the aisle in my emerald bridesmaid dress, bouquet trembling slightly in my hands. Everything looked perfect. Everything felt like a lie.Mom walked down the aisle like a queen, glowing with happiness. Alexander waited at the altar, tall and devastating in his black tuxedo, his gray eyes locked on her. But when I followed behind as her only bridesmaid, those same eyes shifted to me. Just for a heartbeat. It was enough to make my steps falter. The officiant began the ceremony. I stood to the side, watching my mother promise forever to the man who had pinned me with hungry stares less than an hour ago.“Do you, Alexander Voss, take Lydia to be your wife?” the officiant asked.Alexander’s voice was steady and deep. “I do.” But his gaze flicked to me again as he said it. My chest tightene
