The phone in my pocket vibrated non-stop. Every single buzz sent a jolt of anxious energy straight up my spine. I stood next to the kitchen island, holding my plastic cup, and tried to focus on the loud music bouncing off the walls.

"You broke the internet," Miller shouted over a heavy bass drop. He leaned over and showed me his own phone screen. "Your picture has five hundred likes already. The comments are wild, Axel. People are actually tagging the hockey team's official account."

Coach Gregory blew his metal whistle, and the scrimmage began. The sound echoed through the large arena, signaling the start of the defensive drills. We skated into position. The cold air burned my lungs, yet the physical exertion felt good. It provided a distraction from the constant anxiety in my chest.Silas did not waste any time. He focused his attention on me the second the puck dropped.During the first drill, we chased a loose puck near the blue line. Silas gathered speed and lowered his shoulder. He rammed his massive frame into my chest, bypassing the puck altogether. The impact knocked the breath straight out of my lungs. Gravity pulled me down, and my back slammed against the hard plastic boards with a loud smack. My ribs throbbed with sharp pain. Silas stopped a few feet away, spraying shaved ice onto my legs."Keep your head up, Thorne," Silas taunted.Grabbing the edge of the boards, I pushed myself back to my feet. I refused to stay down on the ice. Showing weakness wo

Silas blocked the narrow concrete path. He held his composite hockey stick in his right hand, and he rested the curved blade against the pavement. The dim streetlamp cast long, dark shadows over his tattooed arms."You are out late tonight, Thorne," Silas said. His deep voice carried clearly through the quiet courtyard. "I told you I knew where you lived. You should really pay much better attention to your surroundings."My heart pounded against my ribs, yet I refused to take a single step backward. Showing fear would only give him the exact reaction he wanted. I tightened my grip on the heavy straps of my canvas backpack and stood tall."Move out of my way, Silas," I demanded. "I am tired, and I want to go inside my building."Silas chuckled, and he shifted his weight. "You do not look tired. You look terrified. Maybe you finally realized your famous boyfriend left you behind to deal with the mess he created on the news.""Michael did not leave me behind," I argued. "We are doing fin

I ended the phone call with Gabe and shoved the device back into my pocket. The cold evening wind hit my face when I stepped out of my car. I hurried across the asphalt to the diner entrance. The bell above the glass door chimed as I walked inside. The restaurant smelled like fried food and hot coffee.I scanned the red vinyl booths and spotted Gabe sitting near the back window. He had two thick biology textbooks open on the table, but he was not reading the pages. He held a pen in his right hand. He tapped the plastic pen against the wooden table with a fast, nervous rhythm.I walked over and slid into the booth across from him."Hey," I said. I kept my voice calm to help settle his nerves. "I came straight from the hospital. What is going on?"Gabe dropped the pen and let out a heavy breath. He looked tired. Dark shadows rested under his eyes. He rubbed his forehead with his hand and pushed his textbook aside."I am sorry to drag you out here after your shift," Gabe apologized. "I j

The morning sun shone through the narrow blinds when I woke up, casting long shadows across my small dorm room. I shifted on the mattress and reached for the phone sitting on my wooden nightstand. The device felt cold in my hand. I pressed the side button, hoping the bright screen would show a long apology message or a missed call notification. The lock screen was blank.A hard, stubborn ache settled in my chest. We hung up on terrible terms last night, and he heard Victoria knocking on his hotel door before the call ended. He knew I was upset, yet he decided to go to sleep instead of fixing the misunderstanding. He had my number, and he could have called me back. He simply chose not to do it.If Michael wanted to play the silent treatment game, I was going to play it too. I refused to sit in my bedroom and wait for him to remember my existence. I swiped down on the main menu and tapped the 'Do Not Disturb' icon. I tossed the muted device into my canvas backpack and zipped the pocket

MICHAEL'S POV"I did not drink with her," I said, keeping my voice steady even though my chest tightened with heavy guilt. "My father set that picture up to ruin us. She waited in the lobby, and she grabbed my arm when I walked past her. A photographer was hiding near the elevator doors. I pushed her away right after the camera flash went off, and I told her to stay away from me.""That is a very great story," Axel replied, and his tone remained freezing cold. "It is a massive shame you did not tell me that story yesterday. You let me walk around campus looking dumb while everyone whispered about our relationship.""I told you I fell asleep because I was exhausted beyond reason," I argued, and I gripped the phone tight in my hand. "I played a brutal hockey game against a huge defensive line, and I had to do hours of interviews for the sports networks. I got back to my hotel room, and my body just shut down. I passed out on the mattress. You have to believe me, Axel.""I do believe tha

MICHAEL'S POVThe heavy wooden door of my hotel room stood at the end of the long hallway, and I just wanted to reach it so I could finally sleep. The away game had drained my energy because we played against a tough defensive line, and I spent all three periods fighting for every inch of the ice. I scored two goals, but the physical cost was high. The opposing team targeted me during the third period, so I took a lot of cheap shots. My ribs throbbed from taking hard hits against the plexiglass boards, and my knees ached from the constant skating. On top of the physical pain, the post-game press conference lasted for two hours since the reporters only wanted to ask questions about my personal life."Michael, we need to review the morning schedule before you go to bed," Victoria said. She walked right beside me, holding her bright tablet, and she wore a sharp blazer while her high heels clicked loudly on the carpeted floor."We are not reviewing anything tonight," I told her, and I kep
