The rejection came at 9:04 in the morning.

I was sitting at David's kitchen table with Shadow on my feet and a cup of coffee going cold beside me when my phone buzzed. I looked at the screen. The subject line said “Thank you for your application” which always meant no. Companies that wanted you didn't thank you. They called.

I opened it anyway.

“After careful review of your application and qualifications, we regret to inform you…”
