CHAPTER 39

They served a creme brulee, lamingtons, and some foreign deserts as I was balancing the Manansalas' stares and glances. They are hesitating to start a conversation after the long talks and jokes. 

"Kumusta, apo?" Donya Martina started. 

I stiffened and felt my love's hand pressing my thigh under the table, it was like she's telling me to calm. 

"Ayos naman po, Donya," I answered politely. 

She stared at me with a hint of disappointment. "Lola, hijo, don't treat me like others," she smiled awkwardly. 

I nodded and turned my eyes on my plate. Nawalan ako ng gana na kumain at tinutusok-tusopk ko na lang ang mata ng bangus sa plato ko. 

"We are sorry for trying to communicate  with your girlfriend, we just wanted to see you... and to... give... our deepest..." 

Sa paghihirap niyang magsalita, na ipagpatuloy ko na, "Condolences?" I asked with a fucking conviction in my voice.
