Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Celia
I threw myself on top of her, shaking her, crying so hard I couldn't breathe.

"Mom... please don't go..."

She looked at me. Her eyes were hollow, not a flicker of light left.

I remembered when I was little, she wasn't like this.

She used to smile, sing, hold me and tell me stories.

But then Mom’s sister Vanessa came, and everything changed.

Vanessa told Dad through tears that Mom had stolen the love of her foster parents. But Mom had only been cast out for years and was the real daughter, finally come home.

Vanessa spread lies about her too. Said Mom was calculating and manipulative, that she'd drugged Dad to sleep her way into his life.

Dad had grown up with Vanessa. He believed her.

After that, he loved Mom and hated her in equal measure, constantly using hypnosis to test whether she truly loved him.

The first time, he pretended to go bankrupt, a total collapse. Mom didn't leave. She hauled bricks at a construction site, washed dishes at a restaurant, worked herself to bleeding hands just to keep food on the table.

Dad was satisfied.

The second time he pretended to be disfigured. Third time, a terminal illness. Fourth time, a lowlife gangster. Fifth time, and on and on.

Ninety-nine times.

Each time, Mom fell in love with him all over again.

Dad thought that was love.

But Mom had told me once: her love used to be so full. Now it had been worn down to almost nothing.

By the time Dad had broken her completely, she finally understood the truth. A system had been controlling her all along. She was on a mission to "redeem the villain."

She was giving up.

The water in the tub was ice cold, cold enough to terrify me. I choked back sobs and dialed 911.

When Mom was lying in the hospital bed, Dad walked in, fresh from the office in a tailored suit, looking like he owned the world.

Mom's face was white as paper.

She pulled out a document.

"Ethan. Sign it."

Her voice was barely there, like speaking cost everything she had left.

Dad took the separation agreement and glanced at it. His expression went flat.

He tore it to pieces.

"Miranda. What the hell is this?"

"You want to leave me?"

"Yes." She looked at him calmly. "We're done."

"Are you out of your mind?"

He grabbed her shoulders, hard enough that she couldn't hold back a sound.

"I'm just tired."

Mom smiled, something strange and bruised in it, the kind of smile that makes you want to cry.

"I used to tell myself, if I just try hard enough, you'll love me. Really love me."

"But I get it now."

"Ethan Carter, you never loved me. You just liked being loved like someone would die for you."

Dad took a step back, like something had hit him in the chest.

"That's not true. My tests were to prove you were worth it. If you'd passed all of them, I would've only ever wanted you."

"I don't want that."

Mom cut him off.

"I don't want any of it."

She coughed twice, and a thread of red appeared at the corner of her mouth.

Dad stared at her, eyes bloodshot, like he hadn't seen it.

"You don't want it? Then what do you want?"

"I’m warning you, Miranda. You’ll never get away from me."

The door swung open. Vanessa walked in.

She had golden waves of hair and a tight burgundy dress, the whole package, glamorous and somehow innocent-looking at the same time.

She drifted to Dad's side and melted into him like she had no bones.

"If Miranda wants to leave, let her go. You still have me."

She paused.

"And now... there's a baby too."

  • Dad and Brother’s Regret After Mom Left   Chapter 11

As for Vanessa, after she was sent to the alley, it didn't take long for her mind to go.The last I heard of her was two years ago. She was riddled with disease and had been abandoned on the side of a road, her body already decomposing. Someone said she made it to a bridge one rainy night and threw herself into the river. By the time they pulled her out, the fish had left nothing recognizable behind. No one came to claim her. She was processed as a Jane Doe and sent to a medical school for dissection, the only useful thing she ever did.Vanessa's foster parents didn't fare much better. The Carter Group boxed them in at every turn and the Bennett Group didn't last long. The money ran out, the company collapsed, and the debts piled up.I took back the house and every property that had been given to them. Her foster mother knelt in front of me and begged, crying and wiping her nose."Sandra, I'm your grandmother! You can't do this to me!"I looked down at her face. It meant nothing to me.

Dad walked out. Vanessa's parents erupted in curses behind him.His own parents had never liked the Bennetts. They called the housekeeper over and had them thrown out.Dad wanted everyone who'd hurt Mom to pay for it. That was his revenge. But it was only the beginning. He had made a vow in front of her grave. Every person who had hurt her would answer for it, every single one.And so the years passed.I grew up and took over the Carter Group. But Dad was never the same man again. In the year after Mom died, his hair went half white. His body broke down faster than anyone could explain, and no medication helped. The doctors said it was grief. There was no cure.He stopped being able to sleep, and when he finally did, he always dreamed of her. In the dream, she wore that pale blue dress from when they first met, standing under the pear blossom trees, smiling with her whole face.He would cry himself awake and lie in the dark, repeating the same words to the ceiling."Miranda. I was wron

The color instantly drained from Vanessa's once radiant, beautifully made-up face."Ethan, let me explain—""Don't bother."His voice was quiet. Frightening."We slept together exactly once. And you were the one who got into my bed while I was drunk.""I never looked into you before out of respect for your parents.""Now tell me whose bastard it is."Vanessa shook so hard she collapsed, hitting the floor on her knees."I'll get rid of it. Please. Just give me another chance."His mother stepped forward and spat at her feet."You bitch! You really think my son would ever want you again?"Dad looked at Vanessa. He'd been played so thoroughly."Last chance to come clean before I stop being civil."He dropped a stack of contracts on the table. Every business deal he'd ever given the Bennett family. What looked like partnerships were really subsidies, just money flowing one way.Vanessa's foster mother panicked."Just say it! Do you want to destroy us?"Vanessa's voice came out small."It's

Dad carried Mom into the back seat. I followed behind, crying so hard I couldn't make a sound. Vanessa hung her head, dragged by bodyguards like a dead thing. The car pulled slowly out of the alley, carrying the only person who had ever loved me.Outside, the sun was warm, but the world felt frozen solid.I didn't find out until later that the date was October 25th, the last sunny day of late autumn.Mom's funeral was held three days later. It was quiet and hardly anyone came, just me, Dad, and a few of her classmates. She had arrived in this world alone and left the same way. After what happened in the alley, Vanessa had been hospitalized with a threatened miscarriage and was still there on strict bed rest. Mom's biological mother was at the hospital with her, fussing over Vanessa around the clock. Before the burial, Dad made one last call to Mom's mother."Your daughter is gone. Aren't you going to see her off?"Her voice shrieked through the phone."She died in such disgrace and you

Dad's voice cracked."What are you talking about?""You're not going anywhere. You're coming back with me. The doctors will fix you. Those people will be dealt with. You'll still be my wife—"Mom raised her voice."I loved you ninety-nine times. I don't owe you anything."She held his gaze, her face something between laughing and crying."Nine years. No title, no recognition. I took care of your parents. I gave you two children. I swallowed every humiliation they put me through.""I kept telling myself, it'll happen. What he promised will come true."Her voice fell."Whatever I owed you, I've paid it back.""But what you owe me..."Something bright flickered in her eyes and vanished."I don't want it anymore."Dad's lips trembled. He pressed his hands over his face and sobbed."I'm a bastard. I'm the worst. Vanessa was just someone I used to get a rise out of you."He hit himself across the face, once, twice, over and over, until his cheek went swollen and red."I've always loved you.

Dad turned and kicked Vanessa across the floor. She cried out and something spread red beneath her on the filthy ground. He barely noticed. He dragged her to the side of the bed."I brought the person who did this to you. Whatever you want to do to her, go ahead."Vanessa was sobbing, saying she was sorry, over and over. But it didn't reach Mom. Her spirit seemed to have already scattered.Until Dad told someone to bring me in. I ran crying to her side, and only then did one tear slip down her face."Sandra, don't come close. Mom is dirty."I paused, then gently wiped what I could from her and cried even harder.[System alert: death countdown. Five minutes.]My heart dropped into ice.I could see it, her face going grey in real time, her eyes slowly closing."Mom! Don't—"She felt my panic but couldn't comfort me anymore. She just moved her lips, barely audible."Sandra. Remember what Mom told you."Dad was unraveling beside me, talking to himself."You're not going to die. You're not.
