Melissa

The room smelled of rust and old rain and it wasn't just the moisture creeping through the cracked walls of the cannery, it was the kind of smell that came from things that had been left to rot as i kept pacing, my bare feet adhering slightly to the warped floorboards and the pound of my own pulse sounding louder than my feet.

The light overhead buzzed flickered then steadied again casting everything in this washed-out yellow. Rashid sat in the corner watching me like a cat watching a mouse that had nowhere to run with his jacket hung open and his shirt sleeves rolled revealing forearms corded with muscle and veins.

“Keep pacing like that” he said with a lazy voice “and you’ll wear a trench into my floor”

"I wouldn't be pacing if you'd release me" My voice was sharper than i meant it to be but i didn't bother to fix it. My chest felt tight with every breath in like sandpaper.

He leaned back in his chair, arms crossed "You're here for your own good, Melissa and Jamal's. Do you

JamalThe ropes vanished but the weight on my chest hurt more than they did when they had me tied up.I was standing there on the edge of the pier watching the black SUV take Melissa and drive into the night. All my urges were screaming at me to dash after it then to yank the infernal door wide open and pull her out of it but there were too many of them and I'd be dead before i could turn the handle. Dead men don't get to protect people and it was the fear that kept me rigid. Barely.I left, my fists still clenched and started walking fast down the side street that ran around the marina. I'd committed the license plate to memory without even realizing it. Decades of doing business in the shadows teach you to notice things like that but Rashid was smarter than that. He'd change the plates before he got wherever he was going.Okay, i knew an alternative route.I pulled my phone from my back pocket and speed dialed. Malik picked up on the first ring."Boss?""They've got her" I told him,

MelissaThe night wind cut razor-sharp against my skin but it wasn't the chill that was speeding my heart along like it would burst my ribs wide apart. It was Jamal standing there with his wrists bound behind him and the ropes biting into his skin and his broad shoulders tensing as though he could weather all this and still come to me if i needed him.God, i had to run to him.God, i couldn't.```Rashid's voice drifted into the space between us easy and leisurely as though inviting me to tea."Well, Melissa? Do we have a deal?" he asked. The deal, his deal. The one i didn't even know the terms of yet but could already choose the poison on.I did not answer back as i looked into Jamal's eyes instead because i understood these might be the last minutes i'd ever have to just look at him. His eyes told me not to and his entire face was telling me and begging me not to move towards whatever threat Rashid had set out but his life hinged on it.“You’re stalling” Rashid said and there was a

JamalThe rope bit into my wrists again a bit tighter with every useless struggle i made. My shoulders burned and the cold of the bay seeping up through my shirt so that my skin smarted. The planks beneath me groaned with the roll of the pier and their creaks blending with the hollow slap of waves on pilings.I’ve been in worse places and i’ve faced bigger threats but never not once had my chest felt this heavy because Melissa was here and the instant i watched her walk into the splash of yellow light from the lone streetlamp, the night seemed to catch its breath and her hair whipping about her in the gust, framed her face with wisps of it but her eyes glowed with that fire i knew only too well. A fire that had lured me from the start and was going to kill her.She didn’t belong here. Not on this pier and not in this game. The man holding me was massive and silent wearing a black jacket that reeked of oil and cigarettes tightened his grip on my shoulder. His fingers dug deep into musc

MelissaI couldn't stop shaking. It wasn't the chill cos Jamal's penthouse was hot and almost stifling but the words still rings in my ears of the confession and the truth he'd kept concealed for months, maybe more and it had cracked the ground beneath me and now each step forward felt like walking on shattered glass.I stood in front of the big window, looking down at the lights of the city as they looked like stars from up here, sparkling across the expanse beautiful but unattainable. My face in the glass was that of a stranger like the girl who had first met Jamal, who thought she could keep her heart padlocked, was long gone.Behind me, i could hear him pacing. His footsteps were heavy and his breathing irregular. Jamal wasn't the kind of man who lost control but tonight, i could sense the edges of him fraying. "Melissa" his voice was low and a warning almost. I didn't turn around "You should have told me" "I didn't because i wanted to protect you""Protect me?" I laughed, a co

Jamal's POVThe city felt like it was holding its breath from my penthouse balcony as the skyline glittered like scattered diamonds under the velvet night but it didn’t calm the storm in my chest and i’d been staring out here for almost an hour, the hum of traffic far below nothing more than background noise to the chaos in my head.Melissa.Every time I'd talked myself into thinking i knew what i was doing, her face popped into my mind, those eyes that could cut through any wall i built, the way she said my name, soft but uncompromising and it went beyond attraction now. It was an obsession and obsessions had fatal consequences. My phone buzzed on the glass table. Not a text but a secure line. I stepped inside, closing the balcony doors."Talk" I said."Your shipment's been hijacked" Adrian's voice answered even and smooth but under that, there was an edge that made my jaw clench into tightening "It wasn't the feds this time. Someone else got to me first"I rubbed my eyes "Who?" i as
