Lena barely slept after the kiss. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt his lips again — the heat, the urgency, the way he held her like he’d been fighting the urge for months. It should have scared her. It did. But it also pulled her deeper into something she wasn’t ready to face.

By the time morning came, she felt fragile, like one wrong word could shatter her completely.

She arrived at the office early, hoping to calm her thoughts, but the air felt different — heavy, charged, like the moments before a storm. She tried to distract herself by organizing files, but her hands trembled every time she touched her lips, remembering what happened.

Then Jamie from HR walked by with a bright smile.

“Morning, Lena! Wow, you’re early today.”

“Just… catching up on work,” Lena replied quickly, forcing a smile.

Jamie tilted her head. “You okay? You look like you didn’t sleep at all.”

Before Lena could answer, the elevator opened — and Alexander stepped out.

Her stomach dropped.

He looked… different. Guarded. Sharp. Like he was wearing an armor no one could see. Their eyes met for a split second, and Lena felt her pulse spike. A thousand unspoken things passed between them in that instant.

Jamie noticed too.

“Mr. Knight,” she said cheerfully, “good morning!”

Alexander nodded politely but didn’t break eye contact with Lena.

“Lena. In my office. Five minutes,” he said before walking away.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Jamie raised an eyebrow. “Wow. Someone’s important today.”

Lena swallowed hard, her throat dry. “It’s just about work,” she whispered, though she wasn’t sure who she was trying to convince.

When she stepped into his office, Alexander closed the door immediately. The sound echoed, sealing them away from the world again.

He didn’t speak at first. He just watched her, as though trying to decide whether to touch her or stay professional. The tension between them was suffocating.

“We need to be careful,” he finally said, voice low and controlled.

Lena nodded, but her chest tightened painfully. “I know.”

He exhaled, running a hand through his hair — something she’d never seen him do. “You left so quickly Friday… I didn’t get a chance to talk.”

“I had to,” Lena murmured. “I didn’t trust myself to stay.”

His eyes softened. “Neither did I.”

Her breath caught. The honesty in his voice tugged at something deep inside her.

He stepped closer, lowering his voice even more. “Lena, what happened between us… it meant something. I don’t regret it.”

Her heart pounded. “But we could get in trouble. People talk, and—”

“They already are.”

She froze. “What?”

Alex turned, pulling a paper from his desk. “Someone saw us talking Friday. Too close. Too… familiar.” He looked at her. “And they left an anonymous note.”

Her blood ran cold. “Who?”

“I don’t know yet. But someone is watching.”

The room suddenly felt smaller.

He moved closer, lowering his voice. “This is why we need to be... cautious. If anyone suspects what’s happening between us, they could twist it. Use it. Against you. Against me. Against everything.”

Lena’s throat tightened. “Is this a mistake?” she whispered.

Alexander grabbed her hand — gently, but firmly. “No. But it’s dangerous.”

Their fingers intertwined, and the warmth of his touch calmed her trembling.

“I don’t want to stop,” he said softly, searching her face. “But I don’t want you hurt.”

Before she could answer, footsteps approached the door — sharp, fast, getting closer.

Alexander dropped her hand instantly.

A moment later, the door swung open.

It was Victoria.

Her eyes flicked from Alexander… to Lena… then back again. A slow, knowing smile curled on her lips.

“Interesting timing,” she said smoothly. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”

Lena’s heart stopped.

Alexander’s jaw clenched. “What do you need, Victoria?”

“Oh,” she said with faux innocence, “just a signature. But… you two seem busy.”

Her gaze lingered on Lena a second too long.

That was it — someone knew. Someone had seen.

And the secret they were trying so hard to protect… was no longer safe.

He looked less like a man and more like a star about to collapse.Inside the cabin, Lena screamed his name, her voice carried away by the roaring wind.“ELIAS—STOP! LISTEN TO ME!”But the purge inside him was drowning everything else out.Cassandra grabbed the cockpit mic, yelling into it,“Elias! You’re overloading the purge core! You need to stabilize—NOW!”He didn’t respond. His feet dug through the wing metal, molten gold dripping from his heels. The aircraft groaned, shaking violently.Alexander crawled toward him, pressing against the wind that threatened to rip him free.“Elias!” he shouted again. “Look at me!”No m

The south exit of the bunker opened into a narrow passageway carved through stone, the air thick with dust and the hum of hidden machinery. Lena stayed pressed against Alexander’s side as they moved, her legs still weak but her mind alert.Elias walked ahead, silent, tense, every muscle rigid. The faint golden glow beneath his skin pulsed faster the closer they came to the open air.Cassandra led them quickly.“Hurry. The purge is reacting,” she said without turning.Elias’s voice was low.“It’s sensing something.”Alexander’s brow hardened. “Sable?”“Or something she controls,” Cassandra replied grimly. The moment they stepped out into the night, a cold mountain wind hit them, carrying the scent of pine and snow. In the distance, faint landing lights illuminated a small, camouflaged airstrip. A sleek black jet sat ready, engines quietly humming.Alexander’s grip tightened around Lena’s hand.“We’re almost there.”But Lena didn’t miss the way his eyes scanned every shadow, every treet

The bunker was quieter now, but only on the surface.Beneath every breath, every heartbeat, tension simmered like a storm waiting to break.Alexander paced the length of the room, jaw tight, shoulders stiff, mind already ten steps ahead. He checked weapons, supplies, maps—then checked them all again.Lena watched him from the side, still pale but recovering. He hadn’t left her side for longer than a minute since she came back to life.Elias leaned against the far wall, eyes closed, breathing slow and controlled as he fought to stabilize the purge inside him. Silence fell over the bunker the moment Cassandra said the name.Sable.The word seemed to echo through the metal walls, landing like a blade in the middle of the room.Elias stared at the back of the photograph, his eyes trembling—not with golden light this time, but with raw, human emotion.“My mother…” he whispered. “She—she knew Sable?”Cassandra folded her arms, her expression guarded. “She more than knew her. Sable was your mother’s trainee. Her successor. Her shadow.”Alexander stiffened. “Successor to what?”Cassandra sighed, rubbing her temples.“To the original purge order. Not the corrupted version the Circle twisted… but the true discipline. The first knowledge. The pure form.”Elias looked up sharply. “Then she can help me.”Cassandra hesitated.Lena felt a chill creep down her spine.“Cassandra… why do you look like that?”Cassandra exhaled.“Because Sable is not just your mother’s student.”She looked at Alexander.“She’s the one who betrayed her.”Alexander’s jaw clenc

The first breath Lena took was shallow… then another… then stronger.Alexander held her so tightly she could barely move, but she didn’t fight it. She curled into him like she was trying to climb back into his heartbeat.“Alex…” she whispered weakly. “I’m… I’m okay…”He let out a shaking breath that wasn’t a laugh, wasn’t a sob—just a release of everything he’d been holding inside.“No,” he whispered against her hair. “You’re not okay. You stopped breathing. Twice.”He pulled back, cupping her face with trembling hands.“Don’t say you’re okay.”Lena tried to smile, but her lips only quivered.“You were here,” she whispered. “That’s why I came back.”Alexander broke. His forehead pressed against hers, tears falling freely.“Don’t ever do that again,” he whispered fiercely. “Don’t risk yourself for me.
