The hallway swallowed us in silence as Michael and I stepped out of Henry’s makeshift library.

I closed the heavy oak door behind me with deliberate care. The boy’s laughter still echoed faintly from within, muffled by the thick wood.

For now, Henry was content because had given him something that felt like victory.

But my mind was already elsewhere.

I turned toward Michael, ready to speak.
