"H-here's your order, sir." As I shakily placed it on his table. "Thank you, Miss." And he drank his cappuccino coffee. "Have a nice day, Sir Zexchiel." And I left without another word. We met again. That kapre guy, I mean, Zexchiel. The one who saved me by using our lips. I'm so embarrassed to the point that I want the ground to swallow me up. I went back to the counter and started taking the orders of our customers one by one. Meanwhile, Eliza and Cyrus were making coffee together. They still weren’t okay with each other. While I was getting their orders, Zexchiel kept glancing at me as he drank his coffee. What does he want now? "Ang childish mo talaga, Eliza!" I shouted at their drama. "Hindi mo talaga ako gets, Aifia! Hindi ka pa nga kasal, malalaman mo rin yan." Do you really need to be married to get jealous? "Kami nga, hindi pa kasal. Nagseselos na ako," I said in a pouty voice. She just rolled her eyes at me. "Kung ako pa sa'yo, Ai, break off ko na ang engagement niyo!" I just stared at her because this woman has no shame! "Mahal ko pa eh, ano magagawa ko?" * "I ordered matcha with strawberries on top!" My customer shouted at me and I felt like a standing worm ready to be buried in my counter. "I'm sorry, ma'am. I'll tell my co-worker to make another cup. I'm terribly sorry," I kept apologizing while she complained. I forced a smile and she rolled her eyes. "I ordered matcha with strawberries on top, while what I got is cappuccino caramelled chocolate? If I were you, you need to be better. Tsk!" I felt embarrassed and ashamed of myself. I glanced around and saw that all the attention of the other customers was on us, including Zexchiel. _ground, eat me now!_ She was about to leave when Eliza appeared out of nowhere. "Ma'am. May I ask? Di ba order mo matcha with strawberries on top?" she asked her. "Yes! But that stupid girl gave me the wrong one! Where's the manager here? She needs to get fired!" And I froze. "M-ma'am, let's talk this out—" Eliza interrupted me and Cyrus ran to us. "Oh, not again, Eliza!" He facepalmed and so did I. "You really have no patience, ma'am. Yung cappuccino caramelled chocolate ay sa ibang customer po." And he pointed to the man wearing a mask. "W-what?! Akala ko ba first come, first served ito?! This is disappointing—" Eliza shouted at her. "You're totally right! This is first come, first served. Yet your name is in twenty-seventh while his is in twenty-six?! Explain it to me!" I felt like I was watching a drama. I really need popcorn tomorrow! "Y-you are not even the owner of this cafe! How could you shout at me like that!" Eliza turned as red as a tomato. "I. Am. The. Owner. Of. This. Fucking. Cafe!" She was too stunned to speak. "Dapat marunong kang pumila. Di lang ikaw ang customer dito." Eliza smiled while the woman was humiliated. She grabbed the right cup she wanted and ran off. "You're too soft, Aifia! Marunong ka dapat lumaban!" Eliza scolded me again for being too soft and a people pleaser. While Cyrus was massaging her shoulders to calm her down. "I'm sorry, Eliza. I just don't want to ruin your reputation while I'm here," I sulked like a puppy. "Gosh! That's not important! You need to fight for yourself. Do you want to get fired?!" I shook my head. "No! I don't want to!" And she hugged me. "Hindi! Hindi ko yun gagawin, noh! Wala ka na bang magagawa sa buhay mo?" I laughed. She was right. I checked the time and it was already one, and I still hadn’t had a chance to eat breakfast or lunch. I saw Zexchiel still here, sitting for almost half an hour. I told Eliza and Cyrus that I was going to eat outside. "Sure ka? Pwede ka namang sumabay sa'min kumain?" I shook my head. "Nope, no thank you. It seems you two still have things to fix." And I left. I texted Arthur for us to have lunch together. My little bunny💞 Hi, good aftie, Arthur^^ let's have lunch? We should date and eat together. It's been a while, right? Hello? Are you busy? Should I go to your workplace, my love? I'm going there. I was excited for us to go on a date! I couldn't wait to see him. It's been one year since we last went out. I hope we have a great day today! I was humming as I went inside. I waved to Arthur's co-workers and gave them a warm smile. "Hi, Miss Beautiful. Are you looking for your husband?" I nodded. "Yes. Saan ba siya, Keille?" I asked Arthur's best friend. "Lumabas siya kanina pa," she said, like she was hiding something from me. "Sino kasama niya?" She hesitated, unsure if she should tell me or not. Then Yayealle appeared behind her. "Kasama niya si Miss Cruz, Ai!" She smacked Keille on the head. "A-aray naman, Yaye!" She rubbed her ear. "Napaka-loyal dog mo talaga! Batukan kita eh!" "S-sorry na, mahal! I love you!" And I left them there. My heart felt heavy again. And I had never felt this way except last night. I hope it’s not what I think it is. I walked out of the building and headed to the parking lot. I was about to get in my car when I heard a familiar voice. I saw Arthur's car and I was right. That was his plate number! I walked slowly so I could hear and because I couldn’t believe it. "Aifie. You are the most beautiful girl I've ever laid my eyes on." I flinched at the horror of what I heard. "Oh, stop it, Arthurie! You are making me cry!" I cried silently while listening to their conversation. But my chest tightened even more when I heard those words from Arthur himself. "I can make you cry in bed too. Screaming my name and asking for more." I couldn't handle it. My vision blurred and that was the last thing I remembered in the parking lot. I fainted! "Oof. Thank heavens I got here just in time..."The cake was half-eaten. Aileena was asleep on the wooden table, drooling, still holding her bottle like a trophy. And I was cleaning cups, rubbing it so hard because of the stain that wouldn't come off. "Easy there, tigress!" Eliza yelled at me and I smiled. I glanced at her — she was trying to put Andrea's party hat straight, Fathime was on Derek's lap smearing chocolate on his puff see-through jacket. And I was beside Zexchiel now, wiping chocolate off my white blazer. I was so focused on cleaning my blazer that I didn't notice the lights outside went bright. I looked at it and thought the fairy lights would come off, but it was just a car light. A black car parked right in front of our glass door. Not our usual customers' tricycle, not a delivery bike. A black Alphard, shiny. Eliza froze. "Who's that..." Derek froze harder. And I saw how anxious he looks even with the thick makeup he has on his face. The car door opened. And we watched at the glass door. It was Mr. Kade Fl
Silence. The music was loud so I decided to take the call outside. I held my breath and sighed. "Pa, I can explain—" He sighed, then laughed. "Your mom would be proud. She did the same before, like always! Helping me judge all the designs, the technical problems and about businesses by day, feeding stray kids by night. And I know you got her gene." I laughed and I felt tears again. "So... you're not mad?" "Mad? Hija, you won a custody case without using my money. You used your intelligence and your younger sister's hard work. That's more professional and hard working than stamping designs." My heart aches, not from pain, but the joy I felt hearing those words. "Come home later and bring your younger sister and bring the twins also, your mom misses them." I agreed. "Oh, and bring Derek. I want to meet my other... co-guardian's family." Call ended. I stood outside the cafe, fairy lights behind me, Eliza still screaming bleeding love with broom mic, and twins free ins
For the first time since we opened, we decided to close the cafe not because there were no customers or we were preparing for new flavors or events, but because there were too many emotions that needed to be celebrated. The case! Tables were pushed together with the guys. The fairy lights were on one by one, glittering different colors in my eyes. Eliza's speaker playing random party music was too loud while she took a broom to make it her microphone. "Keep bleeding I keep, keep bleeding love!" she screamed. And Aileena joined her and I face-palmed. I laughed too hard when I saw them covering their ears because of Eliza, and I agreed to it, because she has the voice of a donkey. Andrea and Fathime's little shoes on top of the counter, both asleep now in the staff room, curled on my extra apron like cats. As I gazed at them earlier, they were peaceful, because they were now free. Finally free from the grasp of their mother. I looked at them in the window and my heart melted.
Weeks later, we didn't know that time was ticking so fast.As we entered the courtroom, it smelled like old wood and the aircon was too cold.I was sitting on the wooden cold bench, Fathime asleep on my lap, while Andrea was gripping my right arm like it was her lifeline. My outfit today was my usual office blazer, white, with my cafe apron still folded in my bag. Because after my boss mode, I will escape reality and do my hobby. My CEO and tita mode at the same time.Derek was beside me, hands shaking so hard he kept wiping them on his puff see-through jacket paired with a sleeveless top and a denim skirt. And I knew he didn't sleep. His eyes were still swollen red. Because he prepared for this moment.Eliza was pacing at the back, holding coffee she wasn't drinking. "Where is she? Where is your sister?" she asked while shaking her legs with a blank face."She said she will go at 9AM sharp," I whispered. My phone buzzed.Papa kong pogiWhere are you? Meeting moved to 1PM. The whole cafe went quiet. Customers staring. Phones starting to record. I glanced at the staff who was watching the drama and I widened my eyes to signal them. They instantly nodded and pushed the customers away, closing the glass door, flipping the sign to CLOSED. My face burned hot, and my fingers turned into fists. I knew that using my knuckles to punch her right now would be useless. If I act now, she will use it as evidence. She wants me to hit her. I looked at Andrea, who was now crying silently behind Derek's leg, and Fathime, who buried her face in Derek's sweaty neck, sobbing hard. I was suddenly shot with agony. They were just kids. Five years old? Six? They shouldn't hear this. They shouldn't hear their Kuya being called mentally unstable, unemployed, a bad influence. Without a second thought, I snatched Fathime from Derek's arms and held Andrea's arm. Fathime was so light, so small, her tears were wetting my pink dress. Andrea clutched my hand like I was her l
"So this is where you're hiding them, Derek?" Her voice was soft, pretty, but sharp like scissors. Just like her demeanor. I thought she was a model earlier, but I didn't know she really is a lawyer. A dangerous one. I glanced at Derek and he was frozen where he stands. His arms tightened around Fathime. Andrea hid further behind his leg, gripping his pants so tight her knuckles turned white. I suddenly felt the urge and the tension between them so thick you could cut it with a knife, and I stepped forward. "Excuse me, who are you?" I said, looking at her, balancing my emotions around her level. I tried to sound like CEO Aifia, not cafe Aifia. She flipped her black folder open. And I saw that logo. And now I know where I saw it. It was a Clorexed seal. Gold dove. The same logo as Derek's crumpled, sweaty paper earlier this morning. She smiled, but her eyes didn't. I felt her coldness cling to my body slowly, like the winter wind inside our warm cafe. "Atty. Cassandra L. Vill
