◈IN BLUEBIRD CAFÉ◈
“Thank you,” Jace said, his gaze fixed on me as I carefully placed the tray on the table. A costly bottle of wine rested beside a polished crystal glass beneath the warm golden lights of the café.
“You’re welcome, sir,” I replied politely.
Straightening up, I gave a slight bow and turned to leave, but the faint rustle of cash stopped me mid-step.
“Hello.”
I paused and looked back at him.
Jace sat comfortably in his chair, one arm resting against the armrest while the other extended toward me with folded bills between his fingers. The expensive watch around his wrist caught the light as he tilted his head slightly.
“Please have this,” he said.
My eyes dropped briefly to the money before lifting back to his face.
“Thanks,” I answered softly as I reached for it, but before I could say anything else, a faint smile touched his lips.
“It’s all yours,” he added gently. “Please.”
I nodded and slipped the money into my pocket before bowing lightly again out of habit.
“No,” he said, watching me carefully. “You don’t have to bow all the time.”
For a second, my eyes drifted across the café and landed on Ivy near the counter. The smirk on her face was immediate before she quickly looked away the moment I caught her staring.
I turned back to Jace.
“Your name?” he asked.
“Selene.”
“Beautiful name,” he murmured, studying me with unsettling focus. “You seem new here.”
“Next week makes it a month,” I replied with a polite smile. “Wednesday, to be precise.”
“Mmm.”
His phone beeped softly, dragging his attention away for only a second before his gaze returned to me again.
“Thanks for your time.”
I nodded and turned away, but even as I walked toward the staff entrance, I could still feel his eyes on me. The weight of it lingered strangely against my back, almost enough to make me turn around again. What made it even stranger was how everyone in the café seemed to recognize him without openly disturbing him. Earlier, the floor supervisor had personally greeted him before quietly retreating, and no one had dared approach his reserved table afterward.
The moment I stepped into the staff area, something brushed quickly against my butt.
I spun around instantly.
“Ivy.”
She burst into laughter almost immediately, clutching her stomach dramatically.
“Oh, so you can react fast.”
I rolled my eyes and grabbed a stack of clean plates from the counter.
“Seriously,” she pressed, leaning sideways to catch my expression. “Are we really going to pretend nothing happened out there?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You don’t know?” she repeated in disbelief before scoffing lightly. “Fine. Then when exactly were you planning to tell me about your new sugar daddy?”
I nearly choked.
“Sug— what?”
“Oh, please,” she whispered loudly with a grin. “The man has been
staring at you like he wants to buy the entire café just to keep you here.”
"Sir..." I started quickly, already embarrassed, yet Jace barely seemed to hear me."What's your name?" he asked Xavier softly, but Xavier only stared back at him in silence."Xavier," I answered quietly after a moment, and Jace looked back at me with confusion flickering briefly across his face before his eyes slowly returned to Xavier again."He can't hear you," I explained softly, and silence settled between us for a brief moment as Jace continued staring at him. For the first time since I had met him, he looked genuinely caught off guard."You mean..." he started quietly before stopping himself while I nodded once."He lost his hearing when he was five," I said. "Untreated meningitis."Something in Jace’s expression shifted as his jaw tightened slightly before his hand lifted carefully toward Xavier’s face, pausing for a second like he did not want to overstep, then his fingers began moving slowly through hand signs. My eyes widened immediately at the sight while Xavier watched hi
Silence settled briefly across the room before Alpha Malrik leaned back slightly, satisfaction flickering through his expression."Well done," he said. "But I have one more for you."The atmosphere shifted immediately as the silence deepened, and everything inside the room seemed to grow heavier beneath his voice."Jace Wolfe."The name hit me unexpectedly, my fingers twitching faintly at my side before stilling again, though Malrik noticed it instantly. For a brief moment, neither of us spoke while the tension between us slowly thickened, then I tilted my head slightly."My Alpha..." I began carefully. "Jace Wolfe... your son?"The moment the words left my mouth, the atmosphere inside the room changed as Alpha Malrik’s expression darkened instantly, the shift in his gaze far too sharp to miss. It happened too quickly to be controlled, like the question had touched something buried far deeper than irritation, and the silence that followed pressed heavily against the space between us w
One of my men rushed in from the side, fast and reckless, but Silas turned without hesitation and met the attack with a clean strike that cut it down instantly, the body dropping hard before the space could settle, and before silence fully returned the second came in low and direct only for Silas to shift into it again, ending it with a single precise motion that stopped everything where it stood.I closed in immediately, refusing distance, driving forward and slamming into him as my claws tore across his chest in a heavy arc, but he twisted into the motion and struck back, his ridged arm catching me across the ribs, and I stayed in his space instead of retreating, snapping my hand out to catch his arm mid-strike and halting it short as I stepped in closer and forced the gap between us to disappear completely. He went for my throat, fast and direct, but I caught it before it landed and our bodies locked briefly as tension snapped tight between us, and I shifted faster through that ope
Silence followed as his gaze traveled slowly over me from head to toe before returning to my face again, deliberate and insulting.“Why are you here?” he finally asked.A faint smile brushed my lips before disappearing. “Have you forgotten already? You sent for me.”His eyes flicked briefly toward the men near the entrance before settling back on me again. He slipped a cigarette between his lips, inhaled once, then exhaled the smoke directly toward me.“You are in the wrong place...”“Careful,” I cut in softly, tilting my head slightly. “You may not survive another interruption.”The room fell silent again, the tension thick and oppressive, until Silas finally laughed. It started low, but his men quickly joined him.“Tell me,” he said mockingly, gesturing toward me with the cigarette between his fingers, “is this thing a man or a woman?”The laughter barely lasted more than two seconds before blood exploded across the room.My men moved first, their claws tearing through the throats o
