LOGINCHAPTER 3: The Colosseum
The Colosseum was a theater built for blood, and the irony was not lost on Dimitri as he walked through its decaying grandeur and felt the weight of history pressing down on him like a physical thing. It was a relic of a forgotten era, an underground theater that had once hosted gladiatorial combat for the city's elite, and now it hosted meetings like this one, bloodless negotiations that were just as brutal as any fight because words could cut deeper than swords when wielded by the right hands.
Dimitri arrived early because he always did, and he wanted to see the room first, to map every exit and every shadow and every potential threat, and his men fanned out behind him like a dark tide, taking positions and securing the perimeter.
The theater was grand in a decaying sort of way, with red velvet seats and a stage that had seen better centuries and chandeliers that dripped with dust and faded elegance. It smelled like mildew and old secrets, the kind of place where deals were made and men were betrayed.
He walked to the center of the room where a long table had been set up, he sat down with his back to the stage and his face to the entrance because he wanted to see them coming, wanted to watch their faces as they walked in and saw him waiting.
He didn't wait long.
The doors swung open, and Nikolai Petrov walked in like he owned the place, Dimitri's breath caught in his throat because he hated that, he hated that after three years and everything that had happened, the man still had that effect on him.
Nikolai was tall, dark and dangerous. He wore a tailored suit that probably cost more than most people's houses, but he wore it like armor. His hair was disheveled in a way that looked deliberate, his smile sharp and knowing, as his eyes found Dimitri immediately like they were drawn by an invisible force.
"Nikolai," Dimitri said, his voice was icy because he needed to stay in control, needed to show nothing but cold indifference.
"Grigori." Nikolai sauntered over, ignoring the guards flanking him, as he sat down across from Dimitri with an easy grace that was infuriating. "You look well, and killing people agrees with you, if I do say so myself."
"Fucking people agrees with you," Dimitri replied, and he kept his voice flat and cutting because he knew how to wound with words as well as weapons. "You look exhausted."
Nikolai laughed. It was a low, dark sound that sent a shiver down Dimitri's spine, as he leaned forward with his elbows on the table, his eyes gleaming. "Jealousy is an ugly color on you."
"I'm not jealous. I'm disgusted."
"Same thing, really." Nikolai's smile widened, and he was close enough that Dimitri could smell his cologne, something expensive, dangerous and utterly him. "But we both know you're not disgusted, because you're fascinated, just like I am."
Dimitri said nothing because there was nothing to say. Just then the other families arrived, the Italians, the Irish and a handful of smaller gangs who were eager to see the two titans tear each other apart. They took their seats with their eyes darting between Dimitri and Nikolai like spectators at a tennis match.
The meeting was a farce, and they talked about territories, money and the cost of their war. Dimitri said nothing, Nikolai said nothing, and they stared at each other across the table like they were reading each other's minds.
Then the lights went out.
"DOWN!" Dimitri shouted, and he hit the floor just as the first shots rang out. The darkness was absolute and the chaos was deafening, and he could hear screams, the gunfire and the thunder of boots on the stage above him.
He rolled and drew his weapon, but he couldn't see anything, could only hear the madness, smell the blood and feel the heat of bullets passing inches from his face. He knew he was going to die here if he didn't move.
A hand grabbed his arm, he got tensed immediately and almost fired before he heard the voice.
"Come with me." Nikolai's voice was urgent and strange, and Dimitri had two options and he chose to live.
He followed Nikolai into the darkness, as they moved through the chaos like ghosts, Dimitri could feel Nikolai's hand on his arm and his heart was pounding because they were enemies and they shouldn't be trusting each other, but they had no choice.
They reached a service tunnel and Nikolai slammed the door behind them, the sounds of the massacre faded into a muffled roar. They were alone and trapped and somewhere in the darkness, something shifted between them.
CHAPTER 31: The RevealThe private room was secure and isolated because Dimitri had chosen it himself, and there were no windows, no exits except the one door, and no one within earshot since this conversation was for their inner circle only.Alexei arrived first because he was always early, and his face was grim since he didn't know what to expect, although he had been with Dimitri long enough to know that something was happening.Mikhail arrived a few minutes later because he had been with Nikolai since the beginning, and he nodded at Alexei as he took his place against the wall since they had fought together, bled together, and trusted each other. The others filed in one by one because Dimitri had summoned them personally, and there were five of them in total—men who had proven their loyalty, men who had kept their secrets, men who deserved to know the truth.Dimitri stood at the head of the room with his arms crossed and his expression unreadable, while Nikolai stood beside him be
CHAPTER 30: The HuntThe morning light filtered through the boarded-up windows of the safehouse as the city was waking up beyond the walls, and the smell of coffee drifted through the small kitchen because Nikolai was making breakfast.Dimitri sat at the table and watched him, and there was something soft in his eyes since he had never seen Nikolai like this—domestic, unhurried, human—and he found that he liked it more than he expected."You're staring," Nikolai said without turning around, his voice light."I'm admiring.""Same thing." Nikolai glanced over his shoulder and grinned, and it was the same infuriating grin that had driven Dimitri crazy for three years, although now it made something warm bloom in his chest instead of cold fury.He moved slowly as he worked since the wound on his side was still healing, and Dimitri noticed the way he winced when he reached for the plates, although he didn't say anything because he knew Nikolai would only brush it off. When the food was rea
CHAPTER 29: The VictoryThey arrived at the safehouse in the early hours of the morning as the city was still dark around them, and Nikolai was leaning heavily on Dimitri since the blood loss had made him weak and unsteady on his feet.Dimitri guided him inside and helped him onto the bed because the wound on his side was still bleeding through the bandage, and he needed to be tended to before it got worse."Sit still," Dimitri said as he gathered the first-aid kit from the bathroom, his voice firm though his hands were steady since he had done this a hundred times before.Nikolai obeyed because he was too exhausted to argue, and he watched Dimitri work as his eyes were half-closed and his breathing was shallow.Dimitri knelt beside the bed and peeled away the old bandage to reveal the wound beneath, his jaw tightening as he saw how deep the knife had gone since it was worse than he had thought."This is going to hurt," Dimitri warned as he soaked a cloth in antiseptic."It already hu
CHAPTER 28: The Interrogation Two days had passed since the raid, although the memory of it was still fresh as the blood had barely dried on Dimitri's hands, and the weight of what they had survived pressed down on both of them like a physical thing.Nikolai's wound had been stitched and bandaged by a doctor who owed them favors, and he had been ordered to rest, though he had ignored that order the moment Dimitri told him they were moving. They brought Krasny to a secure warehouse on Dimitri's territory since it was soundproof and isolated, and no one would hear anything that happened within its walls as that was the point. The room was cold and dark and industrial with a single chair in the center and a single light overhead, while the shadows pressed in from every corner as Krasny was dragged inside and forced into the chair. His leg wound had been roughly bandaged since they needed him alive, and he was pale from blood loss and pain, although his eyes were still sharp and defiant
CHAPTER 27: The Raid They moved out at midnight under a moonless sky, and the city was silent around them as they slipped through the streets toward the eastern border where Krasny's hideout waited like a wound in the darkness.Dimitri rode in the lead vehicle with Nikolai beside him and Alexei in the front seat, and behind them came three more vehicles filled with their most trusted men, all of them armed and ready and silent because they knew what was at stake.Mikhail was in the second vehicle with his own team, and his voice crackled through the radio as they approached the target. "We're in position.""Good," Dimitri replied, his voice flat and commanding. "Wait for my signal."The warehouse loomed ahead, a rotting skeleton of rusted steel and shattered glass surrounded by chain-link fences and abandoned cars, and Dimitri studied it through the binoculars as his instincts screamed that something was wrong."It's too quiet," he murmured, and Nikolai nodded beside him since he fel
CHAPTER 26: The WaitThe first day of the wait was the hardest since Dimitri had never been good at patience, although he had learned to wear it like a second skin as his survival depended on it.He moved through his penthouse with restless energy while the hours crawled by, and he checked his phone every few minutes even though he knew there would be no new information since his men were thorough and they would report the moment anything changed.Nothing changed. The second day was worse as the waiting was starting to wear on him, although he refused to let it show since he had an image to maintain and a role to play. He attended meetings with the families, gave orders to his men, and pretended that everything was normal even though nothing felt normal anymore. The reports from Svetlan's watchers kept coming in, and each one was the same as the last."Subject is at his residence. No unusual activity.""Subject met with an associate. Brief conversation. Nothing suspicious.""Subject r
