☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆

I stopped walking when Jake’s voice stabbed me straight in the heart. I didn’t realize I was crying until I tasted salt.

“Please, Summer,” he called again.

I turned to him. His grip still echoed on my skin. And my stupid heart still clung to the hope that this—whatever “this” was—could be fixed if I just turned back and apologized for… I don’t know. Existing?

But as I looked at him, I didn’t know what to say. I needed to get away. I needed an escape. Or at least a dramatically cold breeze to clear the thoughts in my head. I was a terrible friend. I had lied all through the summer and was still lying to him. It made my heart ache.

“I’m sorry, Jake. I need some air. I’ll be back.”

“Can I come with you?”

“No. I wanna go alone.”

I reached the elevator and slammed the button. The doors opened, sleek and quiet like everything else in this too-perfect penthouse. My heart dropped as the doors opened.

Hayden was already inside like he belonged everywhere and n

☆☆SUMMER'S POV☆☆I stepped out of the student advisor’s office clutching the folder to my chest like it was the last thing holding me together. My lip still stung where Hayden had bit it. I could taste the faint iron of it every time I pressed my tongue there, just to check if the mark was real. It was.Jake was waiting by the railing just outside the glass doors before the lobby. His phone in one hand, the other jammed in his pocket. He looked too neat for this cold, dusty hallway. Too sharp. Too perfect. And I was about to walk with him, looking like a dusty old hag in my mum jeans and crusty tee shirt. His eyes flicked to my mouth the second I stepped out. His smile was thin. Tight. A blade hidden behind white teeth.“All done?” he asked.I nodded, hugging the folder tighter. “Yeah. I got the override slip.”“Nice,” he said. “Hi-five.”Our palms slapped together—once, twice—then we flipped them, backhand to backhand, our fingers locking for half a second before we pulled apart. Jak

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹The weekend went by too fast. Ever since Jake told me Hayden's a killer, I’d been a bitch avoiding Hayden like he’s the plague. The coronavirus or something possibly worse. Oh God. My heart is breaking. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹It’s Monday and the sun was way too bright for a morning that felt like a storm inside my chest.“How much longer?”“It’s been two minutes since we left the penthouse,” said Jake.He was driving and I’d been nothing but tense since last night. Since Hayden left the penthouse and never returned. My hands gripped the worn folder stamped ‘Scholarship Office. Final Documents’ so tight the edges dug into my palms. “It’s going to be alright. This is college. It’s not high school. Everyone here’s mature,” Jake said.I stared out the window. “We were just kids running around with sticks yesterday. How did we grow up so fast?”Jake laughed—a short, humorless sound. “Beats me. Soon we’ll be talking about careers. Work. Family. More work.”His words hit

☆☆SUMMER'S POV☆☆ What do you do when your best friend tells you that his brother whom you’re crazy about is a murderer? Laugh. And that’s what I did. I didn’t mean to laugh. But when Jake said it again, I did. Just a tiny, broken sound that fell out of my mouth before I could swallow it. It sounded fake. And it felt worse. My brows pinched together, shock and disbelief etched into my face. The word “murderer” didn’t even fit in my head. “What?” “Hayden is a murderer,” he repeated for the third time now. I chuckled again. “You’re joking, right?” “I wish,” Jake said. He didn’t look angry. That was worse too—he just looked… tired. Old. Like he’d aged five years since the front door slammed. “Don’t laugh, Summer. Sit down.” He pulled me by the wrist, gentle but unyielding. I let him. He planted me on the couch like I was a child about to receive a decent amount of lecture and scolding. “I know we’ve grown, Summer,” Jake said. He crouched in front of me. His eyes were to

☆☆SUMMER'S POV☆☆(Flashback—Before Hayden went out to meet Jake)I pulled my blouse over my shoulders too fast and hissed when the fabric scraped my wrists. They stung. The pain was there as proof that I’d let Hayden hold me down. In truth, I begged him to. Even though I pretended I hadn’t wanted any of it when I did.I didn’t look at him. I just couldn’t. Hayden was standing at the edge of the bed, sleeves rolled up, shirt buttoned, watch back on his wrist.“I don’t want Jake to know,” I heard myself say. My voice didn’t sound like mine. It sounded too thin. Too cheap. “I feel like a terrible friend. I’m a terrible friend. I know.”Hayden didn’t laugh. He just looked at me with those soft eyes that made everything inside me go loose and dumb. He stepped closer and tucked my hair behind my ear—like he still had the right. (Because he actually still had every right to.)“You’re not a terrible friend,” he said. His hand stayed at my jaw—the same hand that had tied my wrists minutes ago.

♤♤JAKE’S POV♤♤ When Summer left, my heart tore into a thousand pieces. I thought she'd be downstairs or somewhere in the lobby. But when I couldn't find Hayden, I knew something was wrong. He had kidnapped her. I should’ve known exactly where he’d take her. This place. The same damn club he used to drag every pretty girl he wanted to ruin. I parked half on the sidewalk. Didn’t even bother killing the engine. Wallace watched me approach with that dumb slab of muscle expression. I could tell by his bored eyes he already knew why I was here. “Out of my way,” I said, pushing past him. He didn’t move. Just crossed his arms like a brick wall grown from the sidewalk. “You can’t come in tonight, Mr. Dylan.” I jabbed a finger on his broad chest. “Bullshit. He’s inside, isn’t he?” My eyes darted toward the thick steel door. Dark glass. No windows. Everything about this place screamed secrets. And Hayden loved secrets more than he loved air. “Did he come here with a girl nam

♡♡HAYDEN’S POV♡♡I type out a reply with a smirk: I don’t know. I’m guessing she’s where she wants to be. Don’t disturb my line again, little brother.Sent.I watch the screen for a second just enough to feel Jake’s useless anger on the other end, then delete his message, and mine. Tossed the device back on the dresser. I turned to Summer—soft, spent, wrists still marked with silk. She was trying to sit up, confusion flickering behind her eyes. I went back to bed. Sat next to her.“Who was it?” she asked again.“No one important, nugget,” I murmured, brushing her hair off her cheek. “You’re mine tonight. That’s all that matters.”But my mind was already racing. Jake wants to play hero after hurting her? Cute. I’ll bury him with a smile. Oh wait! Yeah, Summer asked me not to. Why was she so innocent and adorable?I hadn’t noticed I’d been staring at her until she smiled at me. I smiled back and kissed her temple. The haze in her eyes shifted into mine, my cock twitched again. Fuck! I w
