The topic of unseriousness is obviously a sore subject not just for me. I threw it back at her, and I saw I hadn’t missed. With true enjoyment, I realized just how perfectly I’d hit the target.

I instantly figured out how to arrange a fair “competition,” but for that kind of bet, the stakes had to be raised to the maximum. If we’re betting, then bet big. Otherwise I won’t keep her. This might be my last chance for a normal and peaceful solution to our problem.

“I’m not going to be your wife!” Ann protested in a trembling, frightened voice, jumping in place immediately, though calming down slightly and going quiet. Predictable.

“Well, that’s only if you lose. Or do you already feel that your strength won’t be enough and you’ll be defeated?” I wanted to bait her, push her into reckless emotions, because I wanted her! By any methods and tricks, with all her inner demons and secrets, flaws and virtues.

“I won’t lose!” my little panther hissed, glaring at me from under her brows and clenching her fists.

“Just keep in mind that if I win, you’ll voluntarily and without tricks marry me, with a wedding, a celebration, publicly for everyone to hear,” I step closer to my, basically, future bride! Because I have no intention of losing. The girl retreats unhappily until her back hits the fridge. “And we’ll live happily ever after, in a marriage full of love, passion, kids, and all the other obligations,” I see her brown eyes flash with some strange fire. Something inside her trembled at my words, but she’d put on a mask of impenetrability and angry indifference. Still, my words definitely hooked her, stirring a whole storm of contradictory feelings in the brunette. Unable to stand being this close to the girl I wanted, I gently ran my fingers over her smooth cheek.

“And if I win, you leave me alone forever! And I never see your insolent ass in my line of sight!” jerking her head, Anya pulled out of my fingers and glared angrily. And I spread into a satisfied grin.

Gotcha!

Because I’m not some loser who’d lose a bet this important with the woman he loves!

“Deal.”

“So let me get this straight?” Masha’s huge gray eyes looked at us distrustfully and skeptically. “You rich spoiled people, to settle your argument, are offering me, a homeless kid, a safe roof over my head, tasty food, and all my childish wishes granted for two whole months? And in the end, I have to decide which of you was the better and more responsible parent?”

“Well… basically, yeah,” I confirmed everything said above. Ann just stood there silently beside me, but she wasn’t fighting it. A bet is a bet.

“And you’re waiting for my answer?” the young entrepreneur’s eyes flashed cunningly.

“Well, maybe you’d be against it, or your parents…”

“Pfft!” the little one snorted. “That definitely won’t be a problem…”

“If not you, then we can find…”

“Of course I agree!” Masha hurried to answer, rolling her eyes. “Where else am I gonna find such sucke… kind people!” the kid quipped sarcastically. “But I have one condition!”

Look at that grip! Strike while the iron’s hot! Good girl!

“What is it?” I asked with a hidden smile.

“My brother Lukas is coming with me,” Masha’s look turned serious and unwavering. “He’s only six and he’s not a problem child.”

I saw Anya get nervous. Well, the more kids, the harder it’ll be for her. I’d already handled three, so one extra kid is basically a bonus plus!

“Of course, no problem,” I smiled sincerely, and Ann practically went pale.

“Well then, what are we waiting for?!” Masha lit up with childish excitement. “Let’s go get my little brother… mommy and daddy!”

Five More Years Later:“Get your little asshole ass over here!” Masha yelled at her brother, who skillfully dodged her between the trees. “Your ass hasn’t had a proper beating from me in way too damn long! Looks like they spoiled the hell out of you here without me!”Laughing at full volume and shrieking on ultrasonic frequencies, the boy quickly found protection in the form of his older brother Lukas and hid behind his legs.“Masha, stop bullying Dima,” the guy picked up the dark-haired little boy into his arms.“Who the hell is bullying him?!” the blonde threw her hands up indignantly. “He can run anyone into the ground till their ass sweats through their pants all by himself...”“Maaasha,” Anya looked at the girl reproachfully while laying snacks out on the table in the middle of the green garden, while I flipped meat on the grill. “We beat everything, but your mouth? Absolutely hopeless!”“Why would I beat it?” our beauty snorted. “I still need it...”“Yeah, to kiss Vovka with!” L

Nazar Yartsev:A gloomy day in a gloomy place. A light drizzle began to fall, painting the gravestones in darker shades. The wet earth stuck unpleasantly to our shoes, but the little boy didn’t care. He stood there staring at the smiling photo of someone dear to him, sincerely grieving the loss.“Lukas, let’s go already,” Masha said softly, taking the boy by the shoulder with understanding. “It’s about to pour. Mom’s in a better place now. She’s not suffering anymore there. And there’s no booze there either,” the blonde added quietly and sadly, running into my reproachful glare.Natalya died six months after we took guardianship of her children. I hired a caretaker to help the woman, to look after that disaster of a mother. But the problem remained the same. Natalya herself didn’t want help, and during the hours when the caretaker wasn’t there, she kept drinking thanks to her “kind” neighbor. Her mind never cleared, not even once, during all that time. Then one day, the caretaker simp

“No. She’s fine,” the woman reassures us quickly. “I need to talk to you both. Come back up to the ward. They’ll let you through.”Within minutes, we’re already outside Masha’s room, and we’re invited inside.Only the little girl and Elena are there. The woman watches me carefully as I walk over to Masha, take her hand, and ask worriedly how she’s feeling.“Masha, you and I already talked, and you spoke very positively about Nazar and Ann. I think they finally want to ask you something,” the woman says with a slight smile, giving us an encouraging look, and we realize the moment has come.“Masha, please tell us,” Nazar says to the confused little girl, and it’s obvious he’s nervous as hell. I take his hand because I’m shaking like a leaf myself. This is so much more nerve-racking than it seemed in my head. “We know you already have guardians, but… would you want us to become your official guardians instead? Me and Anya.”Masha stares at us wide-eyed like she can’t believe what she jus

Anya Shumilskaya:“What are you doing here, Dad?” Nazar asks Mr. Yartsev, who’s leaning against his son’s car, watching us closely with his arms crossed.“I thought we were family and helped each other in hard times,” his father scoffs, looking at us with cold steel-gray eyes. “I know everything.”“Well of course you do. Somebody already ran their mouth,” my boyfriend sighs heavily and leans against the car too, caging me between his arms.“Nazar, now isn’t the time to argue,” the man replies calmly to his son’s irritation. “Tell me how the girl is and what the doctors are saying.”Grinding his teeth, Nazar reluctantly gives in and tells his father everything that’s been happening. About the kids and Masha’s condition, and about their half-assed guardians. Oleg listens carefully without interrupting once, only staring thoughtfully at his son.“And you seriously want to take two homeless kids into your care?” Apparently, that’s the only thing that truly unsettled the elder Yartsev out
