Part 2: Chapter 27

Dimitri

When I heard the voice at first, the smell of turpentine and a mixture of tempera and oil paint mediums confused me. These things entirely disguised her scent, and it bothered me more than I actually thought it would. I wanted to be engulfed in her sweet, spicy scent, but that would have to do for now. Besides, it was a drop in the ocean to what came next.

She wanted to meet with me again, and she still loved me.

Wait…she admitted that she loved me. I don’t think we ever said that to one another, and yet she admitted it to me last night. I’m not imagining things wrong, am I? No, I’m sure she said that she still loved me.

I’ll make her say it again tonight, but there’s something else I need to do for now.

“Well, this is a surprise,” Caterina says when she arrives downstairs. She makes her way over to me and kisses my cheek in greeting. “What brings you here, Dimitri?”
