SUMMER'S POV

The cold night air hit my lungs like shattered glass as I tore through the campus gates, leaving the thump of the party bass and the suffocating wreckage of the courtyard far behind. I ran blindly, my boots slamming hard against the asphalt, tears streaming uncontrollably down my face faster than I could wipe them away.

The whole world was spinning, a dizzying blur of dark shadows, wet pavement, and the deafening echo of Lydia’s voice ringing in my head: “He and I are engaged.”

KINGSLEY'S POVThe cold wind whipped against my face as I sprinted through the final stretch of the campus paths, my boots pounding rhythmically against the concrete. I checked every bench, every corner, every dim alleyway and quiet quad between the commons and the dormitories.Nothing.Summer was nowhere to be found. The city was too big, the shadows too deep, and my chest was burning with a relentless, suffocating panic. She had slipped entirely through my fingers, running out into the freezing night with a shattered heart and a mind poisoned by lies.Defeated, exhausted, and shivering from the cold, I finally turned my car toward home. Maybe, just maybe, in some desperate twist of hope, she had gone back to the house. Maybe she was waiting inside, willing to listen to reason, willing to let me explain.I killed the engine, burst out of the car, and practically threw the front door open."Summer?" I called out, my voice echoing off the high marble ceiling of the foyer. "Summer, are

The whole world was spinning, a dizzying blur of dark shadows, wet pavement, and the deafening echo of Lydia’s voice ringing in my head: “He and I are engaged.”I didn't know where I was going. I just needed to put as much distance as possible between myself and the boy who had promised to stand beside me in the fire, only to leave me choking on the smoke.Bam!In my frantic haze, I slammed square into the shoulder of someone walking down the dimly lit pathway, nearly knocking us both off balance."Oh—I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking," I choked out instantly, my voice cracking as I stumbled backward, keeping my head down so they wouldn't see the swollen, te

KINGSLEY'S POVThe heavy iron gates of the courtyard clicked shut with a sharp, final echo, swallowing the sound of Summer’s footsteps into the cold night."Summer!" I shouted, taking two fast steps forward to chase after her, but my path was abruptly blocked.A heavy, calloused hand clamped onto my shoulder, spinning me around with an unyielding grip."Let her go, Kingsley," a cold, flat voice commanded.I blinked hard, shaking my head as I glared through the haze of adrenaline and residual panic. Standing right in front of me was George. His eyes were hard, narrowed into dangerous slits under the amber glow of the courtyard lantern, completely devoid of any warmth or patience."Get your hands off me, George," I snarled, trying to shrug his grip away, my chest heaving as I stared past him toward the empty gates. "She didn't let me explain! Lydia was lying—you heard her, it was a setup—""A setup?" George cut me off, a harsh, humorless laugh escaping his lips as he shoved me back a st

SUMMER'S POVThe air in the small faculty room turned to solid ice. My chest burned, a sharp, suffocating pressure squeezing my lungs until breathing felt impossible. My hands trembled at my sides as I stared across the dim space at the two of them."What... what is going on here?" My voice came out as a fragile, jagged whisper, echoing off the bare walls.Kingsley scrambled backward away from the desk, his face draining of all color. He looked panicked, desperate, his dark eyes wide as he looked at me. "Summer—wait. Please. It's... it's not what you think it is. Just let me—"A soft, mocking chuckle cut him off.I whipped my gaze away from Kingsley, locking onto Lydia. She was standing near the edge of the mahogany desk, casually smoothing down the fabric of her dress with a cool, unbothered smirk playing on her lips."What is so funny?" I snapped, a sudden, blinding surge of white-hot rage overtaking the shock in my chest. I took two aggressive steps into the room, my voice rising s

KINGSLEY'S POVThe notification banner on my phone kept flashing aggressively, illuminating the dark, quiet corners of my bedroom. The university department group chat was blowing up with continuous messages about tonight’s massive after-party at the west annex commons, filled with hype, shared playlists, and picture updates.I stared at the screen, my thumb hovering over the mute button, and swiped it away. I didn't care about a party. My chest felt hollow, carved out by the lingering ache of Summer's words and the bitter realization of how badly everything had spiraled out of control.I tossed the phone onto the mattress, rubbing my tired eyes. But the silence in the empty house was deafening, suffocating me with my own thoughts. After twenty minutes of pacing the floorboards, a heavy, restless urge took over. Maybe getting out of the house, getting some fresh air, and clearing my head was the only option.Minutes later, I found myself walking through the chaotic, bass-thumping entr

SUMMER'S POVThe sky had broken open just as I crossed the threshold into the apartment, soaking me to the bone. I stood in the middle of the dark, quiet living room, completely drenched, shivering from both the cold rain and the hollow, freezing ache in my chest.Everything was falling apart. The foundations I had fought so hard to build—my friendships, my trust, my fragile sense of safety—were dissolving into mud. George, the one person I could always run to when my world was burning down, was furious with me, locking me out of his life. Kingsley, the boy who had promised to stand beside me in the fire, had proven to be just like everyone else, hiding his own secrets in the dark.I sank down onto the edge of the couch, staring blankly at the wet puddles forming around my sneakers, unable to process the sheer weight of it all.Bzzzt.
