Chapter 3

Author: Bagel
In that moment, a lot of old memories surfaced.

Like the gallery opening during my sophomore year of college.

I ran to every frame shop in the city for Roman, staying up for three days straight until my voice was hoarse.

On opening night, however, it was Clara who stood in front of the exhibition wall, explaining the meaning of each photo to the curator with flawless charm.

The curator praised them as a pair of natural-born partners.

Roman smiled and raised his champagne. "We really do click."

I shrank into a corner, holding a stack of empty frames that had just been taken down.

From beginning to end, he never glanced my way once.

Or the summer of my junior year, when Roman insisted on seeking thrills in cartel territory.

I knew the underground world was chaotic and disorderly. Afraid he would get caught in a crossfire, I spent half a month in advance researching routes, putting together medical kits for him, and even trying to find reliable channels to buy Kevlar vests.

But on the day of departure, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, he said the SUV was full and told me to be a good girl and stay in the safe zone.

I dragged my suitcase and stood rigidly outside the iron gates of his family estate for an entire afternoon.

Until that night, when I saw Clara's post on social media. [The wildest man needs a fearless woman to ride or die with him.]

In the photo, she was sitting in the passenger seat, and Roman had one hand on the steering wheel.

The glow of the setting sun spilled across the sharp angles of his face. He looked incredibly handsome, but he felt more like a stranger than ever before.

And another time, at an internal family celebratory dinner.

A capo from one of the branch crews teased Roman, "Why didn't your little girlfriend come?"

Roman held his wine glass, his tone casual. "She's too soft and can't handle this kind of scene. Even if she came, she wouldn't know what to say."

He said it very lightly, no different from his usual lazy demeanor.

And I was standing right outside the door of the private room at the time, holding the hangover remedy I had made for him.

That night, I ultimately didn't push open that door.

I sent a text saying I wasn't feeling well and went to sleep early.

He didn't reply with a single word of concern.

Looking at these fragmented moments individually, they seemed like trivial, everyday matters.

But as they piled up over time, they felt like a heavy weight pressing against my chest.

Soft, not painful, but suffocating.

The SUV finally pulled into a run-down gas station by the desert highway.

I fought back the nausea and pushed the car door open, my legs feeling so weak the moment they touched the ground that I almost fell over.

The heavy metal music in the cabin was deafening. Roman was leaning his head to look at the candid shots in the camera with Clara, laughing uncontrollably.

I clung to the car door and spoke weakly, "I'm going to the convenience store to buy some motion sickness pills. I'll be quick."

Roman stared at the screen without even turning his head, obviously not having heard a word. Only Clara in the passenger seat glanced at me through the rearview mirror, but she said nothing.

The gas station was crowded with all sorts of travelers. The convenience store was all the way in the back.

I waited in a long line to buy the motion sickness pills and grabbed a bottle of chilled soda water from the cooler while I was at it.

By the time I paid and walked out, the sky over the desert had already started to dim.

Clutching the box of pills and the cold drink in my hands, I walked quickly back to our parking spot.

The spot where the black SUV was originally parked was now completely empty.

I froze. My first reaction was that I was so dizzy I misremembered the spot.

So I walked forward and looked around again.

I walked past pickup trucks and bypassed RVs, but there was no sign of that black SUV.

I stood alone in this run-down truck stop. It reeked of gasoline and was filled with strange, rough-looking men.

That was when my phone rang, and Roman's voice came through the receiver.

"Blair, where did you go?"

My throat tightened, and my voice came out hoarse. "I'm at the gas station. There were too many people in the convenience store, and I just came out."

He seemed to let out a breath on the other end of the line. "Why didn't you get in the car or look for me?"

"I just turned around and the back seat was empty. It scared me to death."

"Blair, you've graduated from college, and you still managed to get yourself lost?"

I was stunned for a moment, then asked in return, "I got out of the car to buy medicine. Did you guys not notice?"

Clara's voice, carrying a hint of mockery, immediately cut in. "I thought she fell asleep in the back seat."

"Roman, we've already raced dozens of miles away. If we turn back now, that perfect sunset at the canyon will be ruined."

Roman lowered his voice. "Blair, stop acting up."

"We're in the middle of nowhere. If we turn around at the next exit and come back, it will delay us by at least two hours. It's too much of a hassle."

"Just hitch a ride on the side of the road, or pay someone to drive you, and come find us at the next canyon exit."

I stood alone in this wilderness truck stop, reeking of gasoline and filled with strange, burly men.

A heavy-duty truck roared past me, kicking up dust that made my eyes sting.

I spoke into the phone, asking, "Roman, are you sure you're not coming back to get me?"

He was silent for a few seconds before his tone turned somewhat agitated. "Can you not make such a big deal out of this?"

"It's not like we left you behind on purpose."

"You're a mature adult. Can't you just hitch a ride over by yourself?"

I stopped in my tracks. She stared at me for a few seconds."Back then, I really did look down on you.""I thought you were soft, clingy, and had no ideas of your own.""Roman is going to inherit the Family, and there was no way he could marry a woman like that to be his Donna.""But later I realized that I wasn't much better than you.""I acted like I wasn't afraid of anything, but in reality, I just wanted to prove that I was the one who deserved to stand beside him."She gave a self-deprecating smile that carried a hint of sadness."Thinking about it now, it was incredibly stupid."I didn't say anything else, but Clara didn't stop."That day at the gas station, I intentionally didn't remind him."I raised my eyes to look at her, and she looked back candidly."I watched with my own eyes as you pushed open the car door and walked into that crappy convenience store.""The moment he stepped on the gas pedal, I knew better than anyone else that you hadn't gotten back in the car.""But I

Late that night, I received a phone call from my mother. She gently asked if I was adjusting well to living alone out there.I told her in a relaxed tone that everything was going well.My mother went silent for a moment on the other end, then lowered her voice and sighed."Sweetie, Mom actually wanted to tell you a long time ago. Every time you came back from trips with Roman, the light in your eyes was completely gone.""But you liked him, and Mommy was afraid saying it would make you upset."My eyes suddenly grew hot."Mom, was I completely stupid before?"My mother laughed softly on the other end."Not stupid at all.""When people are young, they always stubbornly chase after things they think are meant to be.""As long as you find your way out, it's all worth it."I hummed in agreement. After ending the call, I quietly leaned on the windowsill of my apartment, gazing at the distant coast. The night scenery of this small town exuded a reassuring tranquility. The yachts on the dista

Roman stubbornly stayed in this coastal town for a whole five days. This high and mighty heir would show up at the corner of my street right on time every day.Sometimes he had bodyguards deliver expensive imported sparkling water.Sometimes he brought me Italian takeout himself from a high-end restaurant.Sometimes he even had people airlift French desserts that I had only casually mentioned once in bed.If all of this had happened half a year ago, I would have been so excited I wouldn't have slept a wink. But at this very moment, I only felt that this delayed affection was incredibly absurd. On the fifth day, Clara finally couldn't take it anymore and came to find me.This time, she came alone. She stood all by herself at the entrance to the block, her delicate face looking unusually haggard."Blair, I guess you won."I looked at her in confusion, finding it completely baffling for a moment. She suddenly let out a laugh. "The expansion deal at the Grand Canyon is completely scrapped.

His voice abruptly cut off.Because even he couldn't invent a more high-sounding excuse.I finished the second half of his sentence for him."You just enjoyed my care, but you also felt my caution embarrassed you.""You were just used to having someone always there to catch you when you fall, yet you despised me for not keeping up with your thrill-seeking pace.""You just needed a glorified babysitter to handle the boring details for you, but deep down, you felt my efforts were worthless."Tears suddenly spilled from Roman's eyes. This was the first time I had ever seen him cry.In the past, he was always proud, forever carrying the arrogance of someone who controlled everything. That kind of pride born from his mafia bloodline, as if the whole world had to make way for him.But now, standing in this damp seaside alley, his eyes were as red as a teenage boy who had caused a disaster. If it were in the past, my heart would have ached for him.I would have stood on my tiptoes to kiss awa

Clara arrived in the evening, just a few hours later than Roman. As soon as she got out of the car, she marched straight up to me in her high heels."Blair, haven't you had enough?""Roman dropped everything to find you. The canyon negotiations are on hold, and he even blew off the talks with the allied Families.""Do you have any idea that we've been preparing those expansion plans for a whole six months?"I looked coldly at her exasperated face. "What does that have to do with me?"She clearly didn't expect me to answer like that, and her face fell."How could it have nothing to do with you?""You knew full well this trip also included an important mission to meet with other faction leaders! But the moment you canceled the hotels and played the missing person, Roman completely lost his mind, walked out in the middle of the negotiation table, and ran to the beach to look for you!""You threw a fit over your petty jealousy and destroyed half a year of hard work. My heart trembled violently. It turned out that my meticulous arrangements, the ones that had been so despised, were not boring at all.My caution was not a buzzkill either. It was just that, in the past, they were given to the wrong person. That evening, I captured a breathtaking sunset over the coastline.I casually posted it on social media without any caption, just the photo.Just ten minutes later, Roman liked the photo.Right after that, his private message popped up.[I'm coming to find you.]I ignored it entirely. The very next afternoon, he actually appeared downstairs at the studio. He had clearly driven through the night. His short hair, usually styled meticulously, was messy, and there were dark, exhausted bags under his deep-set eyes. The collar of his shirt was open, revealing the familiar old scar on his collarbone. The moment he saw me, he first let out a sigh of relief, and then he looked genuinely hurt."Blair, how did you get so thin?"I looked at him, feeling a mome
