LOGINElena’s POV
Sunlight filtered through the curtains, pooling in warm and deceptive patches across the floor. I blinked against the brightness with my body still aching from the adrenaline of the night before. For a terrifying second, I expected to find the room empty with the ghost of Julian’s dark warning still hanging like smoke.
Instead, the rich buttery scent of croissants and freshly brewed coffee drifted up the stairs, wrapping around my senses and dragging me out of bed.
I pulled my robe tight around my shoulders, tiptoeing down the hallway with my guard up higher than a medieval fortress.
I froze on the bottom step of the kitchen, completely paralyzed by the sight before me.
Julian stood by the island wearing a crisp white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The terrifying unhinged predator of last night had completely vanished, replaced once again by the man I had fallen in love with three years ago.
“Morning,” Julian said softly with his voice carrying a warmth that instantly made my treacherous heart skip a beat as he turned around, holding out a plate piled high with scrambled eggs and fresh berries. “I wanted to make things right, El. I'm sorry about last night.. I.. I just lost my temper.”
I stared at the plate then up at his dark earnest eyes. There were faint shadows beneath them.. bruises of a restless night spent wrestling with his own demons. My throat tightened.
“You slammed me against a wall, Julian. Sorry doesn't quite cover a bruised ribcage.”
“I know,” he murmured, crossing the kitchen in two long strides and setting the plate down before gently taking my hands in his. His palms were warm with his touch painfully familiar.
“I was out of line. The pressure at the firm and the anniversary coming up... it's getting to my head. But that's no excuse. Give me a chance to fix this. Please?”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small wrapped box, sliding it across the counter.
My fingers trembled as I lifted the lid. Inside rested a delicate gold pendant shaped like a tiny intricate key glittering under the light. It was the exact necklace I had admired in a boutique window months ago.. an item I had completely forgotten mentioning.
“To unlock whatever walls we've built between us,” Julian whispered, leaning in to press a tender and lingering kiss against his temple.
My defenses crumbled. Three years of habit, hope and stubborn love rushed in to fill the cracks, whispering that maybe.. just maybe.. we could save us. Maybe this was the fresh start we desperately needed.
“Okay,” I breathed, letting out a shaky laugh as he fastened the necklace around my neck. “Truce.”
“To prove it,” Julian smiled with his eyes lighting up with that old boyish charm that always disarmed me, “I booked us a weekend getaway. Just the two of us at a quiet private cottage at an equestrian estate upstate. Just you and me.”
A tiny spark of hope flickered deep inside my chest. This is it.. I told myself, resting a protective hand over my stomach where the little secret lay hidden.. this is the moment I tell him.

Two hours later, we were cruising down the scenic highway with the city skyline fading into rolling green hills and endless pastures. I had decided I'd tell him once we were alone at our little getaway house.
When we pulled up to the country lodge, the weight lifting off my shoulders felt miraculous. Julian held my hand as we walked across the courtyard, laughing at a silly joke about a runaway goat and for a brief shining moment, the ghost of Marcus and the shadow of Bianca felt a million miles away.
We stepped out onto the sunlit veranda of our private cottage, eager to unpack our bags when a familiar and pathetic cough drifted across the lawn and my stomach plummeted straight to my toes.
Coming down the gravel path and dragging a weekender bag like a tragic heroine in a heartbreaking indie film, was Bianca.
She wore cream-colored riding breeches and a cashmere sweater, her dark hair tied back in a neat ponytail looking entirely too well-restored for someone who had suffered a near-fatal panic attack less than forty hours ago.
“Julian?” Bianca gasped, dropping her bag with a dramatic thud and pressing a delicate hand to her chest. “Oh, thank goodness. I didn't know you were coming here this weekend.”
Julian froze with his fingers instantly slipping out of mine. “Bianca? What are you doing here?”
“I couldn't stay in that empty house,” she whispered with her voice cracking with practiced vulnerability as glossy tears welled up in her eyes. “The caretaker mentioned you had a reservation at this estate. I was so lonely, Julian. I had a terrible nightmare about Marcus last night and I just... I couldn't bear being by myself. I promise I won't intrude. I just wanted to be near friends.”
Near friends.. right. Because a sprawling five-star country estate with dozens of empty cottages just happened to run out of rooms except for the one right next door to ours.
“She can't stay with us, Julian,” I said sharply and coldly, crossing my arms over my chest. “This was supposed to be our weekend. Just us.”
Julian’s expression hardened instantly with the warmth from the morning evaporating into thin air.
“El, stop being heartless. She’s having a panic attack standing right here in the gravel. What do you expect me to do, lock the door in her face?”
“Yes! That would be a fantastic start!” I snapped back, my temper finally flaring.
“She’s staying in the guest cottage down the lane,” Julian said, his voice dropping into that non-negotiable tone that left zero room for argument. “End of discussion.”

An hour later, found myself seated on the back of a restless bay gelding, riding along the dusty perimeter trails of the estate. The romantic countryside getaway had officially devolved into a psychological horror film.
Bianca had miraculously felt strong enough to join our afternoon trail ride, claiming horseback riding was therapeutic for her grief. She rode a spirited black mare, chatting animatedly with Julian who led the way a few yards ahead, completely ignoring my existence.
My horse, sensing the high-strung tension in the air, tossed its head nervously snorting against the bit.
“Isn't the air just wonderful out here, Elena?” Bianca called out over her shoulder, flashing a sweet innocent smile that didn't even reach her cold eyes. “It’s so much easier to breathe when you're not suffocating in the city.”
“Fabulous,” I muttered under my breath, struggling to keep a firm grip on the reins as my gelding side-stepped uneasily.
Without warning, Bianca spurred her horse, cutting sharply across the narrow dirt path. Her mare slammed directly into the flank of my gelding, shoving us violently toward the steep rocky embankment of the trail.
“Whoa! Hey!” I shouted, yanking desperately on the reins as my horse reared in panic.
Instead of steadying her mount, Bianca let out a blood-curdling shriek and threw her arms up in the air, deliberately sliding out of her saddle and tumbling dramatically into a soft patch of tall grass beside the trail, staging a masterpiece of theatrical distress.
“Julian! Help me!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.
The sudden commotion of her fall combined with her piercing shrieks sent my gelding completely over the edge. The animal bolted, letting out a terrified whinny as it plunged forward down the rocky slope.
“Julian!” I screamed with my voice cracking as my boots slipped from the stirrups.
The world spun violently out of focus. Blue sky, green trees and jagged rocks blurred together in a terrifying rush of motion and before I could even grab the saddle horn the horse bucked hard, launching me through the air.
My body slammed mercilessly into the hard-packed earth with a searing wave of white-hot agony exploding across my ribs and abdomen. The breath was knocked violently out of my lungs, leaving me gasping for air in the dirt.
Through the roaring ringing in my ears, I heard the thunder of hooves rushing toward us.
“Bianca! Oh god, Bianca, are you okay?” Julian’s voice cried out in blind panic.
Footsteps pounded desperately past my motionless body, ignoring the muffled choking sounds I was making in the dirt.
Julian dropped to his knees right beside Bianca, gathering the crying widow into his arms, entirely blind to the broken bleeding wife lying just ten feet away in the shadows..!
* * *Elena’s POVI didn't answer Bianca. I went to find the only person here I had come for.The garden room was a deep sea of strangers, a few familiar faces bobbing among them. I waded through. Then I heard her, that low, rough voice that had been my comfort for so long. "Elena," she called, holding out both hands.I pushed through the last few guests and reached her. Her hands were thin, but they gripped mine hard. I looked into her face. The creased cheeks, the wisps of white hair. She was looking at my left hand, not my face. "There it is," she said, a small smile on her lips.I felt, more than saw, Bianca's emerald dress flash into the corner of my vision. She bent to kiss Grandma's cheek. "Happy birthday, Grandma."Grandma glanced at Bianca, but her gaze lingered on the chain of pearls at her throat. "Pretty pearls," she said. "Mine are real." Then she turned back to me, as if Bianca had never been there. Bianca's fingers went to her pearls. Then she drifted away.Grandma patted the
Elena’s POV"Not beige," Tracy said, holding up the midnight blue. "Never beige again."I sighed, but I could feel my lips twitching. "I don't need anything fancy. It's just a colleague's birthday.""Which colleague?" Tracy asked, unzipping the dress. She looked at me expectantly."Not today," I said, shifting my weight.Tracy stared at me for a moment, then zipped me into the dress.Tracy loosened the waist without being asked, running her hands along the sides. "Looser," she said. "You said so last time."My hand rested on my stomach for a second, but neither of us commented."Borrowed," Tracy said, handing me her small diamond studs. "Bring them back with a story."I slipped the earrings on. "I'll try," I promised.Downstairs, Bellamy was waiting by the door. He took in the dress, then my face. "Call if you need a car," he said."I'll take a taxi," I replied. He nodded once and opened the door for me.I could see the taxi lights outside the gates. I walked slowly, ignoring the urge
Elena’s POVFor a second I couldn't speak. Then, "You told me you signed it."His chest rose and fell as he breathed. "I told you what you wanted to hear. You hung up on me.""You lied.""I delayed.""Delayed until when?""Until you stop this.""Then I'll make it easy. I'll take nothing. Keep every cent. Sign the paper.""Nothing." He almost smiled. "Grandma married you to me when I couldn't open my eyes. You think a signature undoes that?""Your grandmother asked, and I said yes. If marriage cured comas, Julian, they'd build chapels instead of hospitals."I came around the desk. "You ignored this marriage when you had it. Three years. You looked straight through me at every breakfast, every dinner, every night you left for her." My voice didn't rise. "You don't get to want it now because someone else might."He laughed, once, sharp and breathless. "So there is someone else.""I'll see you in court, Julian."Something in his face cracked then. "Is that his plan? Your colleague?" He je
JulianI stared out the window of my car, watching the city blur past with my fingers digging into the armrest while an ache settled deep in my chest. I missed Elena. The silence of our empty house gnawed at me every night with the reality of her absence feeling like a wound I refused to acknowledge aloud. My pride demanded that I drag her back by force and crush whoever dared to fund her escape but a sudden realization shifted my perspective. If I attacked her mysterious investors and forced her hand through intimidation, she would only despise me more. I wanted her to return to me willingly. I needed her to walk back through my front door on her own two feet, admitting she made a mistake.“Turn the car around,” I ordered.“Sir?” my driver asked, glancing into the rearview mirror.“Cancel the pursuit and head back to the office,” I instructed him, reaching for my phone to send a quick message to my security team. “Revoke the bounty. We are standing down for now.”The driver nodded, m
ElenaI stepped out of the private elevator and walked into the vast living space of the penthouse. The rich scent of the penthouse immediately washed over me, instantly melting the lingering stress from my shoulders.Noah stood by the kitchen island pulling a tray of roasted vegetables from the oven while Finn arranged a ridiculous amount of food across the long dining table.“The conquering hero returns,” Finn cheered, setting a bowl of pasta down and tossing a dish towel over his shoulder.“I survived my first day,” I smiled, dropping my purse onto the nearest armchair before walking over to hug them both. “So what's this emergency about?”“You look exhausted,” Noah noted, gesturing toward the spread of food. “This is the emergency. Come on.. we're not all here but at least Finn and I are free, so we wanted to hangout over an early dinner. Sit down and eat. We made your favorites to celebrate your new beginning.”The dread eating me up since I saw the message instantly gave way to
ElenaBianca slapped both her hands flat against the top of my desk with the sharp smack echoed in the small room and rattling the pens I had carefully aligned earlier.“You are using this job to get back at me,” Bianca hissed, leaning over the desk to glare into my face. “You think you can play doctor and diagnose me just to get petty revenge for your failed marriage. You orchestrated this whole setup.”I leaned back in my chair and folded my hands over her intake file, refusing to match her frantic energy.“Your marriage and mine are separate issues, Bianca, and no one forced you to book an appointment here. You use your pregnancy and your exaggerated grief as tools of emotional control. You manufacture these health crises because you deeply fear Julian will discard you the second you become inconvenient to his daily routine.”“You know nothing about us!” Bianca screamed. She snatched her handbag off the floor and clutched it against her chest like a shield. “You are just jealous be
