I was taken aback by the sudden question.

The little girl smiled broadly at me, looking absolutely adorable with a big orange bow in her hair.

“Ashley! Don’t be so rude!” her mother, Layla, scolded gently. She placed a hand on Ashley’s shoulder and made her sit properly. “I’m so sorry, Samantha. She’s been dying to meet you since yesterday.”

Instead of feeling offended, I waved at Ashley and gave her a soft smile. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you, Ashley.”

The last time I saw her was at my wedding—she had only been a year old.

And now…

She was already this lively, adorable child.

“Mommy, she waved at me!” Ashley bounced excitedly in her seat, her joy so pure that it made me wonder why she was this happy just to see me.

“I’m sorry,” Layla added with a smile. “She’s been your fan ever since she saw your movie The Little Angels. It airs every holiday.”

“She really loves Ms. Williams.”

“Really?” I couldn’t help but smile at Ashley. “That movie came out nine years ago. I’m not even sure I look the same anymore.”

The Little Angels…

A family movie about a kindergarten teacher at an orphanage—Hailey Williams—who tried to help her students find families before Christmas.

In the end, the children celebrated Christmas together… with her.

That movie had touched so many hearts.

It still aired every holiday season.

And yet…

I never received a single royalty from it.

Rowan had taken over everything.

My money.

My property.

My access to my own life.

For five years, I didn’t even have a bank card.

“Are you kidding?” Layla laughed softly. “You look just as young as you did back then. What’s your secret? I want to stay youthful too.”

I didn’t even know the answer myself.

Maybe being locked indoors for years…

Avoiding sunlight…

That was my secret.

“All right, enough talking,” Darren said, pulling Ashley onto his lap to stop her from bothering me further. “You need to respect your favorite actress’s private life, Ashley.”

“But Daddy,” Ashley protested, “my favorite actress is going to be my aunt! Her private life is my private life too!”

She paused suddenly.

Then her face scrunched in confusion.

“Wait! Isn’t Samantha married to my cousin Rowan? That means we were already family before!”

She held her head dramatically.

“But then… why is she marrying Uncle Zephyr?”

Her confusion only deepened.

“Daddy… can I marry two men in the future?”

“Hell no,” Darren said immediately, cupping her cheeks. “No man deserves my precious daughter.”

I laughed softly, watching their interaction.

It was warm.

Happy.

And painfully beautiful.

Because once…

I had dreamed of something like that too.

A family.

Children.

A loving husband.

But I failed.

I couldn’t get pregnant.

And my husband…

Was a nightmare.

Maybe…

I shouldn’t have dreamed at all.

“I’m not marrying two men,” I explained gently. “Rowan and I are no longer together. That’s why I can marry your uncle. Wouldn’t you like me to be your aunt?”

Ashley’s eyes lit up.

“Will you live here if you marry my uncle?”

“I think so,” I said with a smile.

“Then I want to be your niece!” she exclaimed, turning to Zephyr. “Uncle! You’re finally not a lonely Alpha anymore!”

Darren quickly covered her mouth. “I never taught her that!”

Layla giggled and pointed at him. “You say that at least twice a week.”

Darren gasped. “Honey, you’re supposed to defend your husband!”

Zephyr sighed, clearly done with them. “Let’s just eat.”

The room quieted as we started breakfast.

The food looked amazing.

But I barely touched it.

I found myself counting calories automatically.

Hesitating before every bite.

My fork hovered over the plate… then withdrew.

Again and again.

“Is the food not to your liking?” Zephyr asked.

His voice was calm.

But observant.

I looked up quickly. “No, it’s perfect. I’m just… not very hungry.”

He seemed like he wanted to say more.

But I spoke first.

“Are you going to the office today?”

“Yes. After breakfast.”

I hesitated.

“Can I go with you?”

The thought of staying alone in the manor made me uneasy.

I didn’t feel like I belonged here yet.

“If you want to,” he said. “Actually, I was going to ask you to come with me.”

I blinked. “Why? Do you need something from me?”

“You’ll see.”

I assumed he wanted to introduce me to his employees.

That made sense.

What I didn’t expect…

Was what came next.

When we arrived at the twenty-story building, he led me into a private conference room.

Three people were already inside.

They looked important.

Professional.

Which only made me more confused.

Why was I here?

Then I saw it.

Stacks of folders.

Scripts.

Neatly arranged on the glass table.

Zephyr gestured for me to sit.

I did.

Still unsure.

Still confused.

“I wanted to talk to you about this,” he said, picking up one of the scripts and flipping through it before placing it in front of me.

“These are projects I’ve been funding through my media company.”

He looked at me directly.

“I think you’re good enough to make a comeback with one of these.”

My eyes widened.

My mind went blank.

“Wait… what?”

I stared at him.

“You want me in one of your movies?”

I shook my head slightly, still trying to process it.

“Zephyr… are you insane?”

I offered to take Carla to dinner, but she politely declined, saying she wanted to visit her family in another city.“Take care of yourself, Carla,” I said, “and make sure you stay close to your bodyguards.”Zephyr had assigned three werewolves from the Silverclaw Pack to protect Carla. It might seem excessive, but considering the lengths Rowan would go to silence her, it was a necessary precaution.“Please take care of yourself as well, Mrs. Cole.” She smiled. “I really hope you’ll be happier with Mr. Lloyd.”I only gave her a smile in return. For now, at least Zephyr was able to make me feel safe and sound.I then got into the car with Zephyr, and I waved my hand toward Carla as a goodbye.“I still feel bad for her,” I said as the car pulled away from the courthouse.Zephyr looked at me. “Samantha, you don’t have to feel guilty for something you didn’t do. Carla suffered because of Rowan, not because of you.”I lowered my head. “I know, but it’s hard not to feel responsible in some

As the judge left the courtroom, Rowan immediately approached me just as I was about to leave.“Samantha, you still have a chance to return to me,” he said. “We can start over, and I promise I will be a better person for you.”I glared at him, feeling disgusted with my soon-to-be ex-husband. “You’ve said those words hundreds of times, but it is nothing more than an empty promise.”Rowan’s jaw clenched, but he forced a smile, trying to keep his composure. “This time I mean it, Samantha. Look, I know I’ve made mistakes, but don’t let the people around you manipulate you into thinking I’m the enemy.”I raised an eyebrow and scoffed. “The only person manipulating me is you, Rowan.”Rowan raised his hand to touch my face. But before he could put his fingers on it, someone pushed him away.“Back off, Rowan.” Zephyr glared at him.Rowan stumbled slightly but quickly regained his balance. His eyes narrowed as he looked at his uncle. “She’s still my wife, so why can’t I touch her?”Zephyr grit

"Objection, Your Honor!" Reece exclaimed, "This suggestion is absolutely reprehensible. I will not accept any suggestion to harm my client in the courtroom to protect her dignity."The judge seemed to dislike the idea as well, so he said, "Mr. Anders, this is a court, not a circus. Your suggestion is denied."I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my skin. I understood that Rowan was barbaric and heartless, but I hadn’t expected him and his lawyer to go this far.To suggest harming a victim of abuse? Ridiculous.Only a truly heartless person would suggest such a thing in court.I turned slightly to look at Zephyr. He was the one who had told me not to show my emotions in court, but he looked even angrier than I felt.He looked like he wanted to punch Rowan right in the face."Thank you, Your Honor." Reece nodded, then continued, "To corroborate the evidence, I have submitted an affidavit from a former housemaid who worked at Mr. Fell’s house for three years."Rowan’s face darkene

As two weeks passed, I finally had to attend the hearing. I hadn’t expected Zephyr to come with me because of his busy schedule, but he decided to drop all his workload for one day to accompany me."You really don’t have to do this." I lowered my head and looked at my shoes on the ground. "Mr. Lawson and his team will accompany me into the courtroom.""They’re your legal team, while I’m your mate. We’re not the same," Zephyr replied firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument.I felt a warmth creep up my cheeks. His words were simple, but they were enough to let me know that someone cared about me and would be sitting behind me in the courtroom the whole time.As we approached the courthouse steps, Zephyr gently placed a hand on my back, guiding me forward. "Listen, Samantha," he began, his voice softer now, "I know it will be hard for you to face your abuser again, but I need you to stay calm in the courtroom.""Don’t let your emotions control you, so he has no chance to manipulate

I was taken by surprise because I had never expected Layla and Ashley to visit me anywhere other than the dining room."Yes, of course." I opened the door wider. "Please come in."I immediately picked up the papers scattered everywhere. "I’m sorry, my room is a bit of a mess right now."Layla glanced at the script and immediately seemed to feel guilty for coming in without notice. "Did we disturb you, Samantha?""No! Not at all. I’m glad you came." I clapped my hands once after placing the papers on the table and let them sit on the couches. "So, which muffins should I try?"Ashley replied enthusiastically, "All of them! We usually bake cookies for the New Year, but Mommy and I want to bake something new this year!"I bit my inner lip when I saw there were six muffin cakes on the tray, each topped with colorful decorations, sprinkles, fruit, and a generous dollop of whipped cream.Too many calories."Well, I don’t think I can eat them all at once," I said with a smile, "but I’ll try t

Reece nodded. “Exactly. He knew what he was doing. He manipulated me into selling my assets.”I had earned every dime and every asset by sacrificing my blood, sweat, and tears. But Rowan could get it all by simply getting me to sign a piece of paper.Selling my assets… my ass, I didn’t even get a dime from him!Franca straightened her posture and met my gaze. “However, we can get those assets back if we can prove that you sold them under duress.”She continued, “Fortunately, the messages he sent, especially the threats, will help strengthen our case.”I clenched my fists, a hint of anger flickering in my eyes. “Do whatever it takes. He doesn’t deserve a penny of what I’ve worked for.”Reece lifted the corners of his mouth. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Cole. We’re not called the best legal team for nothing,” he said confidently. “We’ll make sure you get what was yours.”After discussing all of the matters, the attorneys promised to take care of my court schedule and to learn more about my case.
