Chapter 1

Author: Lily's Cat
As I was taking care of my mother's altar, I heard people sighing behind me.

"They've been married for five years. How could he not even show his face?!"

"That's true. There's so much to handle at a funeral, and Rena just had a miscarriage. How is her body supposed to take it?"

I flinched as I hit the altar. I felt blood trickling between my legs and realized I needed to change my pad. But the moment I stood up, my vision went black, and I passed out…

-

When I regained consciousness, a phone was ringing repeatedly beside me. The calls kept coming in one after another, as if they were especially important.

It was Josh.

Enduring my dizziness, I answered.

"Thank goodness," he said. "You finally picked up."

My head buzzed. I thought something terrible had happened. I pulled out my IV and climbed out of bed. "What happened?"

"Should I use grapes or berries to make sweet fruit wine? Natalie isn't feeling great, so I want to make her something nice."

Time seemed to stop.

Blood trickled down the back of my hand. I closed my eyes as I felt the room spun around me.

"Josh, my mother died."

My voice was quiet, but he heard me.

After a long pause, he spoke. "That's my fault. Take care of what you need to. I'll figure it out myself."

He hung up immediately before I had the chance to respond. The dark screen felt like a slap on my face.

I had no time to grieve, so I hurried back to the funeral. After several more exhausting days, it was finally over.

As my relatives left, they asked, "Josh isn't coming to pick you up?"

Pick me up?

He hadn't called once in seven days. The only time he had called was to ask what kind of fruits to use to make sweet fruit wine.

I shook my head. "I'll get home on my own."

The bus ride took six hours, and then I arrived home. As I reached for the door, hurried footsteps approached from inside.

Josh pulled it open with a stern look. "Take off your clothes outside and disinfect yourself before you come in."

I froze, thinking he was worried about me.

The next second, he added, "Natalie's here. If you bring any bacteria inside, she could get sick."

My head buzzed again as my voice trembled. "I just buried my mother. Am I unclean because of that?"

Josh froze, then sighed. "That's not what I meant. It's just that…Natalie…"

He looked conflicted. His tall frame blocked the doorway, as if he wouldn't let me in unless I agreed.

For a moment, I felt like an outsider.

"Josh... Why don't you let Rena come in?" Natalie gave his arm a light punch and pulled me inside. She took my coat and hung it up, acting like she was the lady of the house. "Your slippers are on the right."

Only then did I notice that some of the furniture and decorations had been moved. How much time had she spent here in just seven days to change the place this much?

"Did the funeral go smoothly? You must be exhausted. You don't look well," Josh said as his gaze sat on my face.

It was fine. I had only been hospitalized twice and spent three hours on oxygen.

"I'm fine."

When I bent over to change my shoes, I found my slippers were shoved into the farthest corner.

The matching pair Josh used to wear was gone. In their place, two pairs of fluffy rabbit slippers sat neatly together on the top shelf.

Natalie loved rabbits.

"Once you've said everything you came to say, we should finalize the divorce," I said."Then I'll spend the rest of my life talking and never let it finish," Josh said.I froze at the unexpected tenderness in his words. Then I shook my head and smiled. "Neither of us ever had much to say."At our worst, we would go an entire week without exchanging even ten sentences. "I made things clear to Natalie. I won't see her again. I used her illness as an excuse to stay with her again and again." He sobbed and he wiped the corner of his eye. "You know it. But out of my own selfishness, I never considered your feelings.""It's all over," I shook my head."No! It's not over! Rena, let me make it up to you," Josh begged.I didn't understand any of this. "You clearly don't love me, so why won't you let me go?"Josh reacted fiercely as he gripped my hand and shouted, his voice almost angry. "I love you!"I smiled. "This isn't how love looks like. Every time Natalie and I needed you, you c

Meanwhile, I quickly settled into my new life in Nettleford. It didn't take long before my lawyer Andy called me. I felt a flicker of surprise and relief, thinking everything had been resolved. Instead, Andy said, "He didn't sign the papers. He keeps asking me for your address instead."I was quiet for a long time. Then Andy spoke again. "Should I give it to him? He's been waiting outside my office for days. Should I call the police?"I stood on my balcony, stroking Milo as I watched the sunset."Rena?" Andy prompted me."Handle it however you think is best," I said.He let out a sigh of relief, as if he had been waiting for those words. "Alright. Leave it to me."After the call, Andy immediately reported Josh to the police. The grounds were stalking and unlawful restraint.Josh spent three days in custody.Natalie was furious and called me."Rena, I don't understand. What do you gain by making things so hard for him? He has barely eaten or slept because of you, yet you ha

Josh's fingers twitched. He sat motionless at his table at the restaurant for a long time before he finally stood up and left, his mind in a mess. His phone rang as soon as he got into his car. His eyes focused as he picked it up eagerly. Then he saw the name on the screen. Nat.His smile disappeared. He tossed the phone onto the passenger seat. He watched her name flash across the screen repeatedly and his thoughts drifted.Would ordinary friends use such an intimate nickname?Would they call each other countless times every day?He picked up the phone and checked the call log. They had spoken seventeen times in the past five days. Then, he checked his call history with Rena. There were no calls at all.His head began to pound. When he didn't answer, Natalie began bombarding him with messages.[Josh, are you busy? Why didn't you answer?][Mom threw up again. I'm so scared. Josh's expression froze when he heard from Andy about the divorce. He was very certain he had misheard. "What?"Before Andy could answer, Josh laughed. "What kind of joke is this? You must have the wrong person. Please leave."Andy ignored Josh's cold attitude. Instead, he confirmed Josh's identity. "Your wife is Ms. Rena, whose maiden name is Stone, correct? If she isn't, then I really do have the wrong person."The smile slowly faded from Josh's face. He could no longer deny what was happening. He stared at the divorce papers for a long time before looking up. He asked, "On what grounds did she give for the divorce?""Irreconcilable differences," Andy said.Josh could feel his head throbbing as he fumed. "We barely even argue. What do you mean by irreconcilable differences?"He scoffed, feeling that the reason was weak.Andy remained unmoved by his attack and asked calmly, "Is that so? As I understand it, a loving husband would never skip his mother-in-law's funeral."J

Early the next morning, I began preparing everything for the prayer service. I had worked all morning to prepare the booklets and other items needed. When I finally had some free time, I hurriedly ate a few bites.Josh didn't send me a single message. Yesterday's promise meant nothing by morning. Still, I waited a little longer until the priest reminded me several times that it was time to begin. In the end, I called Josh. He had completely forgotten about it and it took him a moment to remember. His tone was apologetic as he said, "Natalie's mother suddenly became ill, so I'm taking her to the hospital right now.""Can't Natalie take her?" I asked."I'm worried she can't manage alone." Josh said.Hearing that, I could feel a cutting pain in my heart. When I miscarried, he had never worried whether I could manage anything alone. When I arranged my mother's funeral by myself, he was not worried about that either. Yet when Natalie's mother fell ill, he was more attentive than

Pain spread through my chest. Out of habit, I reached for my phone to call my mother. In the next second, I remembered she was gone. I explained exactly what I wanted. Once everything was arranged, I brought Milo home. The moment I walked in, Natalie posted another update on Facebook.[Guess who got spoiled again?
