Chapter 3

Author: Beeping Squid
The next morning, I put on full-glam makeup to hide the exhaustion from my previous sleepless night.

Xavier was seated at the dining table, in the middle of flipping through the morning paper. The sun cast a radiant glow on him, accentuating his unbelievable good looks.

I approached him and gravely set a stack of documents next to him.

“What’s this?” He gave me a look.

“Some project grants that need your signature. There are also several authorization letters for the family fund.” I avoided his gaze before continuing, “This last one here is a request for some extra expenses on my end.”

“You’re still throwing a tantrum.” He frowned, “When are you going to see reason?”

“I’m not throwing a tantrum. I’ve thought it through, and I’ve decided I want the new custom ring as compensation. It’s the one in the last document.”

Upon hearing this, his tightly furrowed brows relaxed slightly.

I sneered at his reaction. It seemed to me that he still believed I would still be under his control as long as I continued to obsess over such frivolous things.

“Buy whatever you want,” he said as he signed the documents swiftly.

When the tip of the pen glided across the dotted line on the divorce papers, I held my breath.

After he signed his name next to mine, I took the signed papers and left satisfied.

Then, I drove straight to Saint Mary Hospital to visit Annie, who took a stab at the abdomen to protect me. I had to make sure she was in good condition.

Upon finding out that the surgery was successful and that she was recovering, I heaved a sigh of relief.

When I walked down the hospital corridor, I heard two nurses whispering excitedly between themselves.

“Did you see that patient’s husband? He’s so handsome!”

“Yes! When she came in yesterday and found out she was pregnant, her husband anxiously arranged for her to get the best services!”

I did a double-take and felt a nauseating, ominous feeling wash over me. I couldn’t help myself and snuck a peek.

Through the crack in the door, I spotted Alice.

She was looking down at her phone. I could already make out the maternal affection in her expression.

“Hey Mom, the doctor said I’m six weeks pregnant. The baby is very healthy.”

The person on the other end of the line was both surprised and curious.

“No, I can't marry him anymore,” Alice said while patting her stomach.

The voice on the other end grew louder. Alice paused for a moment before chirping jubilantly, “Who else could it be but Xavier?”

I slumped weakly against the wall and felt my stomach turning.

Xavier kept insisting that he was “allergic to women,” yet he slept with his sister-in-law.

He told me I was “the only woman in his life,” but this whole time, there was someone else in his heart.

I couldn't bear to listen anymore and walked out of the hospital, all drained.

When I reached the entrance of the hospital, I bumped into Xavier of all people.

“What are you doing here?” He reached out to stop me, but suddenly pulled his hand back before I nearly bumped into him.

“I came to see Annie.” I said with a forced smile, “She nearly died protecting me. As Donna, I have a responsibility to visit her.”

Xavier frowned, “I’ll have someone make the arrangements to have her transferred to a private facility on the outskirts of the city in half an hour.”

“Transfer?!” I snapped as I turned toward him.

I glared at him and said, “She just had surgery, and the wound is barely healed! Why are you transferring her now, of all times?”

The answer came to me before I even finished uttering the question.

Because this was the hospital where Alice was conducting her prenatal checkups.

“I’m doing this for her safety.”

Xavier lied without flinching, “Be good and listen to me. Will you head back home to sort out the credentials of that overseas shipment we received?”

I rebutted, “Is it truly for her safety, or are you just worried I’d find out Alice is hospitalized here too?”

Though my tone was calm, I understood that from this point on, the veneer of peace between us was going to be torn down for good.

One year later.Somewhere amidst an island known for being a tourist destination, there was the sound of a baby crying.“Don't cry, don't cry, Daddy's here.”Noah gently settled the child in the cradle. His movements were delicate and practiced.I had an apron strapped around my waist and was stepping out of the kitchen with a tray of cut fruits when I witnessed the interaction. It was very heartwarming to see.“Is she trying to get your attention again?” I approached and leaned against his shoulder.“She just woke up. She must be hungry.” Noah turned around and kissed me on the forehead before asking, “Where are Rosalia and Annie?”“They took the tourists out for surfing lessons. They seem to be having a blast.” I smiled and shook my head.Noah and I had enough savings to live lavishly for several lifetimes. Regardless, we decided to run a resort on the island where I gave birth to our daughter, Sophia Gill.“The livestream is about to start.” Noah gently patted Sophia’s back

The wind in the cemetery was chilly and seemed to slice against Xavier’s cheeks.Though he stood gravely before Sam’s tombstone, he was smiling.Soon, he would return to Grace and take her on a honeymoon.By the time the car pulled into the manor, the sun was coming up.He stepped out of the car and swiftly entered the house, into the living room.“Where's the Donna?” he asked one of the housemaids assigned to nightwatch duty. The housemaid hesitated and tried to conceal her panic, “The Donna has been in your room the entire time and never came out…”Xavier had an ominous feeling.“No,” he grunted before rushing toward his room.He went straight to the dressing room and parted the coats out of the way before reaching for a mechanism. There was still a faint scent of Grace’s perfume mingling in the air of the secret passage. It must be Jakob. He was the only one who knew about the secret passage.Ten minutes later, two of his men brought Jakob into the living room.He was h

When the boat docked on the island, the shimmering sea was reflecting the radial glow of the sun above. As soon as I hopped off the boat, my feet sank into a soft cushion of sand, which blanketed my toes with warmth. The heat seemed to surge into the depths of my heart, and I felt like crying.I wasn’t dreaming.I made it out.“Grace!” I heard a familiar voice and looked up abruptly to see Noah calling out from under a coconut tree only a short distance away. He was wearing a white shirt and looked tall and as striking as ever.He took off and ran to me.“You’re back… Just like you said you would.” He pulled me into a tight embrace. “I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”The heat of his body coursing through me reminded me that this was real. I could smell the salty scent of the sea and the warmth of the sun from him. It was nothing like the nauseating smell of cigars on Xavier. At this point, I could not hold back anymore and started to cry.“Noah… I missed you so much.”T

I turned and entered his dressing room, where I carefully examined every inch of the wall.Jakob told me this was where I could find the secret passage leading to the back door. It was a feature they intentionally left behind when reconstructing the manor to serve as an emergency escape.I traced my finger against a bevelled panel and felt it loosen ever so slightly. When I applied pressure, the panel caved in as expected, revealing a narrow entrance. It was only wide enough for one person to pass through at a time.I mustered my courage and went inside. Soon, I arrived at a steel gate which I unlocked with the key. After I followed the passage to the back door, I heaved a sigh of relief. Then, I went back the same path I had come and draped several large coats over the entrance to keep it hidden. I made sure that there would be no signs to tip him off. Now, all I had to do was play the role of a wife who had “forgiven” him. When he woke up, all he remembered was me agreeing to

It was dark by the time I returned to the manor. I heard heavy footsteps approaching my door soon after I entered.“Grace, open the door.”Xavier reeked of alcohol, so much that I could smell it through a closed door.I hesitated for a moment before getting up to open the door.I found him perched right outside the doorway, his figure swaying slightly as if he was having trouble keeping his balance. Several buttons of his shirt were undone while his tie hung loosely around his neck. His deep gray eyes were bloodshot and fixed intently on me.“You…” His voice came out terribly hoarse when he spoke, “Why aren’t you hiding from me anymore?”I stepped aside to let him in while answering curtly, “As if there is any use in hiding.”He staggered into the room while casually tossing a bottle of liquor he was holding to the floor. Then, he suddenly grabbed my wrist and pleaded with a desperate look in his eyes, “Grace, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have forced myself on you, and I shouldn’t

  • Don Cheats, I Quit!   Chapter 15

After leaving Annie, I did not return to the manor right away, nor did I seek out Jakob.I was getting worried because my period was twenty days late.At first, I figured it was hormonal since my emotions were all over the place, and I had been losing sleep lately. Now, though, a brazen idea came to my mind.I had the driver take me to a nearby public hospital that was relatively out of the way. After doing a blood test and taking an ultrasound, I waited for a gruelling half an hour that felt like eons.“Congratulations, you're pregnant!” With a smile, the doctor presented me with a report.I felt my blood turn cold.My hand instinctively reached for my stomach. Though it was still flat, I knew that there was a child whose blood ran with mine and Noah’s.Though this was not an ideal time to become pregnant, it also felt like a ray of hope. All my hesitation and fear dissipated when it occurred to me that I was with child.I had to get out. I had to take my child and Annie and
