Done Being Nice to My Leech Roommate Chapter 10
After Mona's departure, the dormitory became much quieter overall.June and Rosa sat on the edge of my bed, but neither of them initiated a conversation.Sunlight shone through the window, illuminating the floorboards. After a long while, June finally said quietly, "Natalie, I'm sorry. I always used to say that you should cut Mona some slack because you were doing well for yourself. I now understand that I wasn't advocating magnanimity but generosity at someone else's expense."I could hear a faint tremor in her voice.Rosa also chimed in with her head lowered, "I'm also sorry. I used to advise you to exercise tolerance, because I wasn't the one feeling the pain. When your things were stolen, we didn't think much of it. Yet, when it was our turn to be the victims, we finally realized how infuriating it was."I smiled and replied, "It's all in the past now."June looked up with slightly teary eyes. "I was wondering just the other day—if it had been my tablet that Mona stole that

The school announced its decision promptly.Mona apologized on the anonymous message board under her real name, compensated for all losses, accepted disciplinary action from the school, and moved out of the dormitory.Mrs. Joyce transferred most of the compensation money on the spot. As for the remaining thousand or so dollars owed, the Joyces signed a written agreement to settle it within three days.At Monday's regular faculty meeting, the school announced its decision on how to handle the matter.Mona was issued a demerit for theft and defamation, and she officially received a mark on her criminal record. She pleaded tearfully with Ms. Lewis for a lighter punishment.Ms. Lewis simply told her, "Hindsight is 20/20."Mona's public clarification on the anonymous message board was written in a very high-handed manner."I, Mona Joyce, suffered a momentary lapse of judgment due to my family's financial difficulties. I stole my dormmate's belongings and also spread misinformation a

The school authorities quickly stepped in to handle the situation between Mona's family and me.Security personnel invited us all to Ms. Lewis' office. The office wasn't particularly large, so after packing seven to eight people into the limited space, a heavy tension fell over the room.As soon as Mona's family were all seated in a row, their attitudes visibly softened. The aggression they showed at the school gates before was completely gone.Mrs. Joyce wiped away tears and started trying to appeal to Ms. Lewis' emotions."Ms. Lewis, it's all a misunderstanding. Children fall out with each other all the time. All they need is to talk it out. Will it do if we just compensate her with a bit of money and apologize? Mona's still young, so please don't put this on her record. She still needs to take her postgraduate exam."Ms. Lewis pushed a stack of documents across the table to her and explained, "This is the list of losses incurred, a video recording, an audio recording, and a r

At noon the next day, a crowd had gathered at the school gate. The wind was very chilly in November.Matthew had brought both Mr. and Mrs. Joyce along.Mona stood between them with puffy eyes, looking incredibly aggrieved.Mrs. Joyce rushed to the front of the crowd, pointed an accusing finger at me, and yelled, "It's you! You're the damn brat who bullied our poor Mona! Mona has enough on her plate as is! What makes you think you can mistreat her just because you're well off?"Matthew took a step forward as well and fixed me with a harsh glare."I demand justice from you for pushing Mona to this extent!"Security tried to step in, only for Mr. Joyce to shove them away with the excuse of family business.More and more onlookers gathered around. Some people were filming while others were whispering among themselves.Relentlessly, Mrs. Joyce screamed at the top of her lungs, "Mona has always been a sensible child! She gives her younger brother everything and eats only plain brea

I hadn't checked my phone since returning from Ms. Lewis' office.Mona was in the dorm room, but she remained curled up in bed and didn't dare look my way.She assumed that everything that happened in the office would be the last she heard of the matter, but she was wrong. That night, I sat at my desk and unlocked my phone.I'd already backed up three copies of the video a while ago.I had one copy saved on my phone, another in cloud storage, and a third sent to Ms. Lewis.I tapped on the dormitory group chat to bring up the chat window. My finger hovered over the "send" button for two seconds. Then, I pressed it.In the instant I hit the button, my finger was perfectly steady. For a whole ten seconds, the group chat was dead silent.Nobody spoke or recalled my text.June was the first to say, "Holy cow."Rosa sent out a long string of exclamation marks. Then, Shannon showed up as well."Natalie, why did you send this? Hurry up and recall it. Don't blow up the situation,"

The office was so quiet that I could hear the ticking of the wall clock.Mona stood frozen in the doorway with her face completely drained of color.Ms. Lewis looked up at her and said gravely, "Mona, come in and close the door behind you."Mona shuffled in, looking like someone had sapped all the strength from her.As soon as she set foot inside the office, she started crying, and even her hands shook."Ms. Lewis, I… I may be poor, but even so, I have my pride. I didn't steal anything. Natalie must have edited that video. She's always had a thing against me, so she just wants to get me kicked out of the dormitory!" she exclaimed. She wept so hard that her entire body was shaking. She looked like someone who'd suffered a terrible injustice.Ms. Lewis simply looked at me without saying anything.I met her gaze and explained slowly, "The video was recorded at 2:30 am. The pink slippers you're wearing in the video are your own. After you opened my drawer, it was June's wallet that
