Chapter 4

Author: Roaring River
The group froze in their tracks and turned around. The man with a scar on his face sized me up and sneered. "You've called the cops? Who do you think you're scaring, you little brat?"

He violently kicked the trash can beside him. "Even ghosts don't come to this hellhole!"

My lie was exposed in an instant.

"Sylvia!" Lyra cried out when she saw me. "Save us!"

I had no time to worry about her. My eyes were fixed on Adrian, whose arms were pinned behind his back by two men.

A thin trail of blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, and his breathing was ragged. Obviously, he had tried to fight back and had been beaten. His eyes locked onto mine, filled with an unreadable emotion.

"Hang on. I'll save you!" I yelled at him. I swung the baton wildly, striking at the man closest to me.

"Crap! You asked for this!" The man dodged the swing effortlessly, ripped the baton right out of my hands, and slapped me hard across the face.

My vision went black, and I staggered before collapsing to the ground.

"You don't know what's good for you!" another man growled, stepping forward and delivering a sharp kick straight to my abdomen.

The excruciating pain made me curl up into a ball, and I almost couldn't catch my breath.

"Don't touch her!" Adrian snarled, thrashing wildly.

"Oh, someone's protective of her." The man with a scar on his face smirked before gesturing to his man. "Get her! Let's see how cocky she is when we're through with her!"

Fists and boots rained down on me like a torrential downpour. I tried my best to protect my head.

Just then, a chaotic rush of footsteps accompanied by furious shouting rang out. "Freeze!"

I forced open my swollen, aching eyes and saw headlights illuminating the entrance of the alley. Rowan charged in with several men who looked highly trained.

His face was wrought with anxiety, and his eyes immediately locked onto Lyra, who was shivering and hiding behind Adrian. "Lyra!"

He rushed over, pulled Lyra out, and shielded her in his arms. He examined her. "Why did you come here? Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for you?"

Lyra's expression was filled with tension. "I wasn't feeling well and wanted to go to the hospital, but I witnessed Mr. Adrian being kidnapped… I couldn't just stand by and do nothing."

Rowan let out a soft sigh. "I'm glad you're alright."

A second later, he noticed me. I was lying on the ground, battered and bruised. He froze for a moment at the sight of me. Then, I heard the scar-faced man lower his voice and tell Rowan, "Mr. Rowan, what brings you here? Don't worry, we always fulfill our end of the bargain."

Rowan's body stiffened slightly. He glared at the scar-faced man, seemingly infuriated by his big mouth.

Instinctively, he looked at me. His gaze was unreadable. There was anger and a flicker of guilt that vanished as soon as it surfaced, but in the end, it all dissolved into nothing.

He gently pushed Lyra out of his embrace, walked over to where I was curled up on the ground, and crouched down. Looking me in the eye, he said, "See, Sylvia, this is destiny. In my previous life, I mistook the person who saved me, causing Lyra to suffer. In this life…"

He paused for a moment before glancing at the pale-faced Adrian. The corners of his mouth curled up slightly. "I'll make sure that the person who deserves retribution gets exactly what is coming to them. For old time's sake, I can let you off the hook. So long as you keep your mouth shut, I'll pretend that you have no idea."

I looked at his face, which felt both so familiar and yet completely foreign, and suddenly found it all to be incredibly absurd. Having been given a second chance at life, I had simply assumed that he just didn't love me and had chosen someone else. I had never imagined that he was thoroughly rotten to his very core.

As soon as the realization dawned on me, I let out a low chuckle. Rowan's brows knitted together. "Have you lost your mind? Do you really want to die alongside this short-lived bastard?"

I didn't look at him, nor did I look at Lyra, who was currently playing the part of a damsel in distress behind him. Using every ounce of strength left in my body, I threw myself over Adrian, who was injured, using my back to shield him from any further attacks. "Yes, I want to die with him!" I yelled.

My words seemed to thoroughly infuriate Rowan. The sheer malice in his eyes threatened to swallow me whole…

"The one I liked has always been you. But I realized it too late, didn't I?" Rowan asked."When I saw you throw yourself toward Adrian without a second thought, using your body to shield him, I knew… I had missed my chance. I had completely lost you."I listened quietly, without a single ripple of emotion in my heart. "That's all in the past now, Rowan."He stared long and hard at me. After a while, as if he had finally made up his mind, he slowly rose to his feet. "I'll give up all inheritance rights to the Blackwood family," he announced. "I've already spoken to Father and Adrian."My brows drew together. He continued, "I've decided to become a priest. I'll atone for the sins I committed in my last life and this one. I'll never come back."His decision was somewhat beyond my expectations, but I didn't speak up to dissuade him. This was the path he had chosen. This was his repentance. He slowly walked up to me and looked at me. His eyes were filled with unreadable emotions. U

At that moment, Mr. Julian could no longer hold himself back. Trembling, he rose to his feet and pointed at Rowan before choking out, "You fool! Even now, you still refuse to see the truth! Why do you think I favored Adrian all these years? Do you think it was only because he's my eldest son?"Mr. Julian's voice cracked with anger and sorrow. "It's because your life belongs to your brother! In that fire all those years ago, the person who charged into the flames and carried you out on his back wasn't Lyra; it was Adrian!""What?" Rowan felt as if he had been struck by a bolt of lightning. He whipped his head toward Adrian, then toward Lyra beside him, whose face had gone deathly pale. "That's impossible! It was obviously Lyra who…""When he rescued you, he inhaled a massive amount of smoke, causing permanent damage to his respiratory tract and lungs! He almost collapsed and died himself!" Mr. Julian's voice rose, carrying the crushing weight of a grief he had kept buried for years.

I smiled. Then, I turned to look at Lyra, whose expression had gone tense. However, I had no intention of exposing her. For his so-called choice and his undying affection were things I deemed worthless. "Is that so?" I asked flatly. "In that case… I hope you both get what you desire. May you stay locked together for the rest of your miserable lives!"My reaction completely infuriated Rowan. "Sylvia Laurent!" he snapped, dropping all pretenses. "Don't push your luck! I'm the head of the Blackwood family now. If I want to crush you, it's easier than crushing an ant! You—""Oh? Is that so?" Just then, a cool, indifferent voice drifted from the doorway. "I would certainly like to know how you plan to crush my fiancee."Everyone was frozen in place. In the very next moment, they snapped their heads around to look at the entrance of the conference room. The anger and arrogance on Rowan's face froze in a heartbeat. There, right at the entrance, backlit by the light, a lean but comma

After the funeral, Rowan completely dropped his act. Asserting himself more aggressively than ever before, he wasted no time taking command of most of the affairs and resources Adrian had left behind. He began to frequent the group headquarters, wining and dining the old board members while freezing out anyone who dared oppose him.Adrian's death had practically paved the way for him, removing his very last hurdle. It was obvious he had been scheming for this for ages. A new era had dawned on the Blackwood family. Barely a month had passed before Rowan, backed by a majority of the group's shareholders, openly turned on Mr. Julian at a board meeting. Using excuses that Mr. Julian was advanced in years, devastated by the loss of his beloved son, and no longer mentally fit, Rowan demanded that his father step down from his position as chairman of the group so that he could take over. The air in the conference room was thick with tension. Mr. Julian trembled with rage as he looked

"Quickly, drive Mr. Adrian and Ms. Laurent home!" Cyrus hurriedly ordered the bodyguards. "Have the doctor wait at the annex!"On the way home, Adrian held my hand the entire time. His hand was cold, but his grip was firm. "Why did you come?" he asked in a low voice. "How did you know something would happen to me?"I leaned against the back seat, and my body ached all over. Yet, I felt safer than I ever had before. "I figured… Before I headed out, I told Cyrus that something might happen today and asked him to keep a close eye on your whereabouts."Adrian was silent for a moment before he sighed softly. "You're very smart."My consciousness began to blur. Then, I heard a deep, crisp voice ring out next to my ear. "I won't let anyone hurt you again."…After that attempted kidnapping, Adrian and I grew much closer. He was still a man of few words, but the way he looked at me was warmer than before. He began to allow me to participate in more things. Yet, I could vaguely feel

Just then, hurried footsteps echoed from the entrance of the alley. "Stop right there!"I forced my head up and saw Cyrus rushing in with a group of black-clad bodyguards. They swiftly subdued the kidnappers. The man with a scar on his face was pinned to the ground, yet he still refused to give up. He looked at Rowan and rasped, "Mr. Rowan, didn't you tell me—""Shut up!" Rowan cut him off sharply as his expression changed drastically. Cyrus scanned the scene. The moment he noticed the battered, bloody state Adrian and I were in, his gaze hardened. He immediately gestured for the doctors who had come with him to step forward and treat us. Then, he turned to Rowan. "Mr. Rowan, if Mr. Julian learns about what happened today, I'm afraid he'll be very displeased."Rowan sneered, "Cyrus, are you trying to use my father to pressure me?""I wouldn't dare," Cyrus responded calmly. "However, Mr. Adrian is your elder brother, after all, and Ms. Laurent is now your sister-in-law. No mat
